The Fossdyke Roman Canal in betweek Torksey and Saxilby in West Lindsey, Lincolnshire.
The Fossdyke Canal is generally considered to have been constructed during the Roman period, but there is a case for an early medieval date. It connects Lincoln and the Witham to the Trent. Its cutting would have involved the straightening and rerouting of the River Till. A 2005 borehole suggested that the River Till may have become redundant before the 12th century, but no firm date.
The first documented work on the Fossdyke was when it was deepened in 1121. It was Crown property until James II presented it to the city of Lincoln by an act of 1671. There were frequent problems of flooding and silting but its use increased after improvements were made by Richard Ellison to whom it was leased in 1741, and son Richard after 1743.
It was deepened in the early 19th century and in 1840. The Fossdyke was used at this time for the transport to Lincoln of coal, lime, cotton, linen and woollen goods, timber and pottery etc. and for the moving to the towns of Lancashire and Yorkshire of cattle, wool, wheat, barley and flour. Craft were sailing barges, horse-drawn and steam packets. The GNR took over the lease in 1846.
Commercial water transport gradually declined with increasing competition from railways but survived longer on the Fossdyke than on Witham. Barkers and Lee Smith were last Lincoln users of river barges, and the last water transport company was Furleys of Gainsborough in 1972.

Sudbury Hall was given to the National Trust in 1967, together with some estate buildings. The Vernon family retained the bulk of the estate which is administered from the Estate Office in the village. In the late 1960s the Vernon family had a new house built for themselves to the south west of the church.

Acción simbólica de desobediencia civil pacífica
El 14 de mayo de 2007, al cumplirse un mes del 75.º aniversario de la proclamación de la Segunda República, durante el transcurso de la primera de las manifestaciones para protestar contra la precariedad laboral y exigir la adopción de políticas que posibiliten el acceso de la clase obrera a una vivienda digna, Jaume d'Urgell fue detenido por agentes de policía(1) que vestían de paisano, bajo la acusación de injurias a la bandera(2). El motivo: haber escalado la fachada del edificio público que alberga la sede de los Juzgados del Contencioso Administrativo, para acto seguido, arriar la bandera oficial (roja y gualda) y en su lugar, izar una bandera legítima (roja, amarilla y morada).

Detención y atestado falsificado por la policía
Tras permanecer 27 horas (3) detenido, fue puesto en libertad provisional con cargos y sometido a un régimen de restricciones que incluyó la obligación de presentarse cada 15 días en sede judicial. El atestado policial, además de relatar la restitución de la tricolor, aparecía ostensiblemente «engordado» con acusaciones ficticias: como la falsa imputación de haber organizado y dirigido esa protesta ciudadana, la supuesta destrucción del mobiliario urbano o el haber proferido insultos a la autoridad; se da la circunstancia de que muchas de esas imputaciones se corresponden a hechos acaecidos horas después de producirse la detención, cuando Jaume todavía se encontraba bajo custodia policial, por lo que no pude haberlos cometido, al no poder encontrarse en dos lugares distintos al mismo tiempo.
Petición fiscal de un año de cárcel
En su escrito de acusación, la fiscalía estimó que se había incurrido en sendos delitos de «injurias a España» (Art. 543, CP) y «desórdenes públicos» (Art. 557.1, CP), por los que solicitó la pena de un año de cárcel, más del pago de una multa de 4.000 euros y la inhabilitación especial para sufragio pasivo durante un año.
Suspensión del primer juicio
El pasado día 4 de octubre de 2007 debía haberse celebrado la vista oral del juicio en primera instancia, pero finalmente, ésta hubo de ser aplazada tras la renuncia sobrevenida de la asistencia letrada, justo dos días antes, debido a presiones políticas.
Censura previa en el Ateneo
Tres días antes, el 1 de octubre, la Junta de Gobierno del Ateneo de Madrid atentó contra su tradicional prestigio de espacio de libertad para la palabra, al suspender su autorización (anterior, por escrito y con la firma del presidente) para que se celebrara una rueda de prensa en su sede. Esta suspensión supuso un caso flagrante de censura previa. Ese mismo día, por primera vez en la Historia, el monarca aprovechó el marco formal de la ceremonia de apertura del año académico en una universidad, para introducir en su discurso un alegato en defensa de su propia institución. La semana siguiente, los miembros de esa misma Junta de Gobierno fueron recibidos oficialmente en el Palacio de la Zarzuela. Quince días más tarde, el ministro de Cultura designó al presidente del Ateneo como miembro del patronato del Centro Documental para la Memoria Histórica.
Amenazas y agresiones fascistas
Cuatro días antes, Jaume fue objeto de una agresión, al ser abordado por dos desconocidos que sin mediar palabra le golpearon con un objeto contundente en la nuca, cuando salía de ofrecer una conferencia en Barcelona. Asimismo, durante todo este tiempo, tanto Jaume como su familia han sido objeto de numerosas amenazas, algunas de las cuales se han comunicado a la autoridad.
Nueva fecha para el juicio
La nueva vista oral del juicio, tendrá lugar el próximo viernes 18 de enero de 2008, en el juzgado de lo penal número 5 de Madrid, que se encuentra en la calle Julián Camarillo, número 11.
