Lagria Hirta is a Darkling Beetle that favours dry localities. This one I found at Reddish Vale Country Park on a Thistle.
The follow-on to yesterday's post: This is how the little Burrowing Owl grabs those goofy figeater beetles - bam, right out of the sky. I was SO excited when I looked at these in camera playback - great light, not a butt shot, perfect timing. BUT, on the big monitor at home, seeing the next shot in the sequence, it turns out this is either a near miss or it slips through his talons. I was disappointed for both of us. The owl doesn't regroup either - a miss is a miss and it flies back to its vantage point to pick up another victim. So I moped around the house for awhile, and then I remembered George Carlin's skit about the "Near Miss". He was describing 2 airplanes - he said to paraphrase - a near miss is a collision. Watch the short skit - got my smile for the day back.

Unusual petroglyph. I take this to be half-human, half-jaguar. It occurs in Apache territory, but may predate the Apache presence.
A clean and shiny CN 3401, an AC44C6M, leads a grain train westbound through Spruce Grove. These AC44C6M locos are rebuilt from older Dash 9 units, extending their life.
On the rear of this train was 3062, an ES44AC.
Shot Info: Canon 400d, ISO 100, 18mm, f11, 1/15th second.
Processing : RAW imaged edited in Lightroom 2.0 where I desaturated the image. I added a digital grad filter to slightly darken the washed out sky and then boosted the blacks and contrast. Minimal editing in CS3 was done, only an unsharp mask was added.
This image was taken @ Mark Twain Lake near Hannibal Missouri.

Another shot from back in December. It's hard to believe that this was over two months ago now.
When the Snowy looked behind it and saw that a couple of dogs (with their owners) were moving closer, it looked back with the widest eyes I have ever seen.
It actually stayed there for a couple more minutes before deciding that the dogs had come too close for comfort.
