I've been getting so many wildlife photo ops lately that there's hardly been room for anything else. So the other evening I intentionally took a landscape walk during the last hour before sunset. I'm not too interested in sunsets, which all tend to look the same; rather, I like seeing what that warm light does to the land itself, and the sky above.
I brought my tripod and a single lens, the 14-24 mm. Keeping it simple. And I wasn't trying for a calendar shot, the classic view; there are no landscape icons in this shot. No river, no buttes or rolling hills. Instead, an expanse of prairie grass and a pastel sky, lit by the last light of day. The sun was behind me; it had just dropped below the horizon. No wind. Very quiet.
It struck me that this is what a lot of photographers are afraid of, when they first look through their viewfinders at a prairie landscape: "Good grief, there's nothing here!" In fact, a big coulee opens up just past these grasses, but I intentionally left it out of this composition. To shoot prairie, you have to come to terms with space, with vastness and apparent emptiness. Maybe what seems at first a liability eventually becomes a strength?

Went birding last weekend and didn't have much luck so I paid more attention to the ice that had formed along the shore. :)
