Stopped by The Malt House after work to visit my favorite bartender.

A very, very lazy shot through the bedroom window this morning - did not even open it!

Having almost no work to do for the first time in a while is the best feeling everrrrrrrrr!

I spent all day playing games and chatting with my flatmates, then ended the evening watching and playing pokémon.

Good times.

This photo on the other hand, is meh.

On August 4th, a large fire consumed a barn full of hay in the Town of Linn, Wisconsin. Initial reports indicated there had been around 2,000 bales of hay inside when the fire broke out. Linn FD Command activated MABAS Division 103 Box #33-1 to the 2nd Alarm for a full response and to the 5th Alarm for tankers only. Fire departments responded from all over Walworth County and also parts of northern McHenry County. No news has been released yet about the cause of the fire.

We say to those who are in love, 'It can't be true cause we're too young,' I know that's true because so long I was so in love with you, so I thought. A year goes by, and I can talk about it. On my knees, dim lighted room. Thoughts free flow try to consume myself in this. I'm not faithless, just paranoid of getting lost or that I might lose. Ignorance is bliss, cherish it. Pretty neighborhoods you learn too much to hold, believe it not and fight the tears with pretty smiles and lies about the times. A year goes by and I can talk about it. The times were right but I couldn't talk about it. Chorus romance says goodnight, close your eyes and I'll close mine. Remember you, remember me. Hurt the first, the last, between. So I Thought-Flyleaf

I just was inspired I guess.

It took me a while to figure out that my group photo ID # coincidentally shows that MYS has won the #1 Yoga Shala 3 times of the Bay and East Bay!!!

BoB Party, 2011.

After leaving the warmth of Brookfield Place in Toronto on this frigid morning, I walked through a narrow, trash-strewn laneway between the office buildings just in case I would catch someone on a smoke break. Alas, there was no one present, but I was drawn to the quality of the light which was penetrating like the light into a deep canyon. It was bouncing off the west wall (it was still morning) and casting a beautiful diffuse light across to the east wall. I decided to wait a few minutes in case someone came along but after five minutes I was getting cold and was a bit concerned that my loitering in the deserted laneway might appear suspicious. Settling for a photo of the deserted laneway, I walked through but at the exit I could see a man’s back. He had appeared at the north end of the laneway and was having a smoke. All I could see was the back of his coat and his big fur hat.

I wasn’t about to give up my idea of using this location no matter who this man turned out to be. I introduced myself and told him what I was doing and asked if he would consider being a subject for my photo project. “Sure” he said. “Why not?” Hands were shaken and a few more details about my request were shared. Meet Jack.

I asked him if he would indulge me by following me down the laneway to a spot I had picked and warned him the location was a bit grotty but the light was very nice. His response was “That’s ok with me. Let’s go.”

Jack turned out to be very nice and didn’t act at all as if this was the craziest request he’d ever received. He was gracious in allowing me to turn him a bit this way and a bit that way as well as positioning his wonderful fur hat a tad back on his head to clear his right eye. I took a few photos with my mild wide angle lens and then we talked some more.

Jack is 60 and when I asked what he did with his time he paused, then replied “Well, Jeff, today I work for the bank. I’m a loans manager. But day after tomorrow my answer will be ‘I’m retired.’” I congratulated him and we chatted a bit about retirement. Jack has worked for the bank for about 40 years and enjoyed his job even though it involved a good deal of travel. “I have accounts all over the place and have to travel to service them.” He told me that his early retirement is a result of two factors: Firstly, his wife has retired and she’s been bugging him “So don’t you think it’s time to retire already?” Secondly, he told me his gene pool does not favour longevity (heart disease in his family tree) and he wants some years to enjoy post-career while he is in good health.

We compared notes and he thought my photography project was a very interesting way for me to enjoy my recent retirement. Jack has always loved music and was in a band (blues) in his youth and said it was pretty successful. He looks forward to enjoying music and said his brother is going to teach him jazz guitar. He said he is also going to commit himself to taking better care of himself (nutrition and exercise). He knows his wife will appreciate his taking those things more seriously.

Jack was delighted to be getting copies of the photos and said his wife will be thrilled to have them. We exchanged cards but by the time I got home I discovered I’d lost his, probably while pulling my phone out of my pocket. I feel quite bad about it because my promise to send the photos quickly was a serious promise. At this point all I can do is wait and hope Jack emails me from my contact card.

Twenty-five minutes later and after I’d swapped out my wide angle for my portrait lens for a few more photos, we were both ready to get on our way and seek some indoor warmth. Many of my Stranger encounters are quite brief and the exchange of information is consequently a bit limited. When an encounter is with someone who is not rushed and the conversation is interesting, like this one, I find the project extra-rewarding. Jack agreed that it had been quite fun to meet and chat in that grotty alley and talk about such a variety of topics – but especially about retirement.

Thank you Jack for participating in 100 Strangers. You are now Stranger #331 in Round 4 of my project. Happy Retirement!
