Dos caras, lo rural y lo moderno...

Summer recollections, To enjoy the environment".
I agonised over the colour on this shot for ages. It is a handheld shot taken really late in the day. The car was in the shadows, but the foliage was capturing a lot of golden sunlight. Lots of colourful reflections were also taking away from the sleek, black look of the car. It seemed that every edit I tried, made the car turn blue or the overall saturation looked really unnatural. Eventually, I decided to go down a different path and turned to a black & white. I'm really happy that I did. I think it makes the car really "pop" in the photo and stand out from the background.
This is a real change of pace for me. I thought I'd try my hand at some artistic car photography. I have to say, photographing cars isn't as easy as it looks. In particular, a black car. There are so many things to think about that I hadn't considered. Like the background. You wouldn't believe how many shots were ruined by distracting elements in the background. I took one fantastic shot that I loved, but it was ruined by the reflection of a passing car in on the door. I also found that the position of the setting sun is critical. I'm still not sure I've got it right.
This final edit is a 3 image HDR blend. The first shot was super under-exposed, essentially showing just the headlights. Another at -1 stop for the sky and the third at +1/2 a stop for the shadows. All up, I'm very happy with the final result for my first attempt. In the future, I'm thinking about combining some inner-city laneways with a heap of graffiti at a backdrop for some more car photography.

Shooted with a DIY car-rig and a SB-800 in front of the car trigged by Cactus. The flash was hold by my son while the car was moving very slowly. Shutter speed: 8s aprox.

My wife asked me to take her car to service today. When I came home late early in the evening, I decided to give this idea a try on her car with a nicer interior while her car is clean.
Still, the bumpy roads don't contribute to this type of shots, and I don't have an ND filter to work well with my 12mm, but the time of day makes the motion blur look rather interesting while the interior is pretty nicely lit by the sun. I'll try a slightly different setup to shoot a different angle next time.

Tonights archive photo, one of the BMW 330i saloon Traffic cars that used to be used for Roads Policing until 2005. It is seen here in 2003 outside the Operations Division at Aykley Heads HQ.
The blue/white striping above the headlights was a feature added to try and improve front end visibility, mainly at night, a feature that did not last very long after proving ineffective.

10-Day Road Trip from North Carolina to North Dakota and return. North Dakota was the only of the lower contiguous 48 US states I had never visited. What better excuse for a Road Trip?
A great ride for the trip. BMW 330i. We covered 3782.7 miles and averaged 38.8 miles per gallon.
