Too tired of these lonely nights

I've lost everything

That meant anything

You're ringing in my ears

Haunting in my dreams

I've tried running but I can't

Escape from you in my memories

I have a deep respect for this man. His personality is radioactive, dangerous but glowing so much you can’t look away, occasionally you even develop super powers around him (that’s a joke). I first met him during Eco Fashion Week, the first year I shot it back at Robson Square. What I initially thought to be a sightly addled man surprised me with an uninhibited charisma. We talked a bundle, about photography, about a war photographer he had known, the show, and about a pair of novelty glasses he’d seen while passing by the store Claire’s. A couple minutes later (and with a little persuasion) he came back and got another shot on the media wall, this time with ’S W A G’ draped over his eyes.

Over the next few years we kept in touch in passing, seeing each other at other Eco Fashion Week related events or catching up over Facebook. At the last event I got a copy of his book, Other Eyes, and what did he choose for the author photo? That goofy mugshot of him on the mediawall, ’S W A G’ glasses and all. I felt honoured when he asked my permission to use it, and glad that I’d made enough of an impression on someone I view as an inspiration.

I most recently met up with him for a sunrise walk across the Lions Gate bridge. He had one request for being up so early and it was to help him take a video. He has history there and wanted to do a sort of tribute. It was a long walk, and a longer conversation, though one that I thoroughly enjoyed. To even begin picking at the wealth of information stored in Baron’s brain leaves me (while slightly boggled) enriched and wanting more. I have a lot more to say but there aren’t enough words or pictures worth the thousands to say just how curious he makes me or of the amount of appreciation I have in knowing him.

This bus was new to LRT as 321 in 1987.
