31st July 2020:

I shot out earlyish this morning to get my last photo for July. As I did the sun disappeared just when I needed it. But, you can't always win! I raced around the car park and found this rather sad looking Chinese anemone. I don't know what's happening to the flowers at the moment, as so many seem to be fading far faster than usual. Although there are some lovely white ones in a garden at the entry of the car park, which look great. I just need permission to go in to take a photo. :(

31st July 2017:

I went out this morning with one thing in mind to take for today and I even took it.

However on my way home I stopped to look at the paintings in a art workshop and noticed this Hoverfly on a painting in the window. I took this one through the window, but got a couple of others from inside, having asked permission.

It was all too much, an insect on oils was far more fun than what I gone out to take. Plus I can always take the other thing another day as it won't be going anywhere.

31st July 2021 :

Digging into the cupboard this morning I found our strawberry dishes, or that's what we call it. I had forgotten we had it, Although I can't remember where or when we were given it, as it isn't something we'd have bought ourselves.

You can see in the inlay how it looks when "assembled".

Immingham allocated 47223 enters York station with a northbound train of Mark I coaching stock, 31st July 1976

Locomotive History

47223was built by Brush at Loughborough and entered traffic as D1873 in May 1965 allocated to Tinsley MPD. It would spend its entire thirty year career allocated to the Eastern Region with twenty two of those years allocated to Immingham. It was withdrawn in December 1995 and eventually broken up during February 2005 by CF Booth, Rotherham.

York station pilot 08540 on the 31st July 1976 rests between duties.

A rather mediocre forty three year old Kodachrome 64 colour transparency that I cannot scan and edit into a reasonable colour image, with the best I can manage being this black and white version.

Locomotive History

08540 was originally D3704 and was a product of Darlington works, entering traffic in June 1959 allocated to Hornsey MPD. Its stay at Hornse was short and it transferred to Finsbury Park in April 1960. Its next move was to Hitchen in March 1969 and in the summer of 1971 it received a classified repair at which it was fitted with dual brakes. On release in August 1971 it was transferred to Neville Hill. It transferred to York in January 1976 and stayed for the next eleven years until transfer to March in August 1987. It had a two year spell at Cambridge from January 1988 before returning to March before transfer to Toton in March 1994. After forty five years service it was withdrawn in April 2004 and finally broken up during August 2010 by EMR at Kingsbury.

Single class 20 locomotives were not that common and therefore 20132 heading south approaching York station with a solitary brake van is quite unusual, 31st July 1976.

For around four years from 1967 – 1971 York had a batch of around ten to twelve Class 20’s allocated and used them singly on the Rowntree/Foss Island trip working. Interestingly York still manged to use single class 20's on the Rowntree traffic after York lost its allocation of class 20's in 1971 until the mid 1980's.

Locomotive History

After the failure of the Class 17 Clayton type 1 locomotives British Rail decided to revert back to the tried, tested and reliable Class 20 English Electric type 1 and placed an order for another batch of one hundred locomotives. Locomotives of this order were built at the Vulcan Foundry, Newton le Willows, Lancashire and delivery commenced in 1966, four years after the last locomotive of the previous orders. 20132 was the fifth locomotive from this order and was delivered in March 1966 as D8132. The soundness of the design is also shown by the high number of Class 20’s still running around in the mid 1970’s in their original green paint, indicating long periods between classified works repairs. 20132 would survive a period in store in 1983 and would continue in traffic into the mid 1990’s Following withdrawal it was sold to Harry Needle in 1999 and was initially stored at Bescot until moved to MOD Longtown in January 2001. In January 2005 it was transported by road to Barrow Hill and has in recent years returned to main line use.

London Midland and Scottish Railway “Motor Car Van” M37011 stands in one of the bay platforms at York, 31st July 1976.

Vehicle History

The London Midland and Scottish Railway introduced their final design of Motor Car Van (Diagram 2026) in 1938 with one hundred and fifty vehicles being built by Metro-Cammell. A further seventy five vehicles were built by British Railways between 1951 and 1956. M37011 is from the 1938 batch and looks as though it has recently had a repair/repaint as it is a reasonably clean condition with almost pristine lettering.

GBRf 47727 Edinburgh Castle and 47739 head south along the Midland Main Line at Hathern working 5Q47, 10:44 Derby Litchurch Lane – Wolverton with brand new 720540 in tow, 31st July 2020.

Locomotive History

47727 was built at Crewe works as D1629 and entered traffic in October 1964 allocated to Nottingham MPD. Two months later it was transferred to D16, Nottingham Division which was in effect Toton and it remained a Midland Main Line engine for virtually the next six years before transferring to D05, Stoke Division (Crewe) in March 1971. After a short spell allocated to D02, Birmingham Division (Bescot) it transferred to the Eastern Region at Immingham in June 1972. It was renumbered 47047 under the 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme and remained an Eastern Region engine transferring to Tinsley (1973), Holbeck (1975), Immingham (1976) and Stratford (1980). At the end of 1980 it entered Crewe works for classified repair and emerged in January 1981 fitted with electric train heating and a new number, 47569. The next thirteen years would see 47569 allocated to Gateshead (1986), Inverness (1987), Eastfield (1988), Bristol (1989) and Crewe (1991). 47569 was renumbered to 47727 in January 1994 when fitted with “cab power demand” equipment and RCH type nose end jumpers for operating with remote driving vehicles on Royal Mail trains. It was transferred to Toton in January 2004 and stored a month later at the Willesden Railnet Royal Mail depot. In 2007 it was sold to Serco (now Colas), moved to Eastleigh, overhauled and re-entered traffic in September 2007. It is currently operated by GBRf.

Hull Trains 180109 crosses Selby swing bridge on the approach to Selby station working 1A94, 12:33 Hull – London Kings Cross, 31st July 2018.

Unit History

180109 is one of fourteen units built by Alstom between 2000 and 2001 at Washwood Heath, Birmingham for express duties on the Great Western Main Line. They are part of the Alstom Coradia 1000 family of multiple units (along with the class 175) and are capable of 125mph. However their introduction was plagued by a number of reliability issues and First Great Western have gradually downgraded their use as they acquired additional HST sets until it finally disposed of the class during 2008/09 with the last class 180 in service with First Great Western stored on 27 March 2009. Following their discarding by First Great Western, four class 180 units have been leased by First Hull Trains.

My ride to Sheffield (1Y06, 07:18 Nottingham – Leeds) in the form of Northern 150222 stands in the rain in Platform 3 at Nottingham, 31st July 2018.

Unit History

150222 is one of the final batch of eighty five class 150 two-car units which were built at York Works in 1986/87. Now over thirty years old and recently refurbished for a few more years in service the railway have certainly had there moneys worth from the initial capital investment.

A group of young trainspotters seem to have lost interest in York allocated 47432 as it departs Grantham with a Kings Cross bound express, 31st July 1976. I suspect that I have just had a ride behind 47432 from Doncaster as I make my way home after a day out on the East Coast main Line.

Locomotive History

47432 was originally D1547 and was from the first batch of production series Brush Type 4’s built at Brush, Loughborough. It was fitted with a Brush TG-160-60 Mk4 main generator, Brush TM64-68 Mk1a traction motors connected in a series parallel arrangement, a Spanner Swirlyflow MkIIIB steam heating boiler and was vacuum braked. It was dual braked, fitted with Electric Train Heating and had its boiler removed in March 1973. It was renumbered 47432 in July 1974 and had its boiler water tanks removed in February 1979.

47432 was new to Finsbury Park MPD in October 1963 and spent time over the next twenty seven years allocated to Tinsley, Immingham, Crewe, Toton, Stratford, Bescot, York, Gateshead and Bristol. 47432 was somewhat accident prone in the 1970’s requiring collision damage repairs in May 1972 and October 1976 and suffered extensive fire damage in September 1978. 47432 was stored in October 1991, withdrawn in March 1992 and was broken up by Booth Roe on site at Bristol Bath Road MPD in September 1995.

40077 approaches York from the North light engine, 31st July 1976.

Locomotive History

In 1955 British Railways implemented the start of its Modernisation Scheme and ordered one hundred and seventy four diesel prototype locomotives from various UK manufacturers. In the type 4 category English Electric proposed a 2000 hp. locomotive technically based on the layout of 10203, but with the body-style similar to a restyled 10000. British Railways placed an order for ten locomotives and the first locomotive D200 was accepted into BR stock in March 1958. This was followed by further orders so that the class finally totalled two hundred locomotives. 40077 was originally D277 and was built at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire in May 1960. On entering traffic it was allocated to York MPD before transfer to Gateshead in June 1960. Apart from two spells at York in 1967 and 1969 it would remain a Gateshead engine until October 1980 when it transferred to Healey Mills. Its final transfer was in January 1983 when it transferred to Longsight from where it was withdrawn in June 1983. 40077 was broken up at Doncaster Works during April 1984.

Stabled in the loco sidings adjacent to York station on the 31st July 2018 is West Coast Railway Co. 33207 Jim Martin.

Locomotive History

33207 was originally D6592 and is part of a batch of twelve class 33’s (D6586-D6597) with reduced width bodies for use on the width-restricted Tonbridge-Hastings line. It was built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company and the mechanical design of the class 33 was based on the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company Type 2 (class 26/27). However the Class 33 is fitted with a larger eight cylinder Sulzer engine making it a Type 3 locomotive. D6592 was delivered to Hither Green MPD, in March 1962 and was withdrawn in February 1997. However in 2001 it was one of nine Class 33 locomotives acquired by Direct Rail Services and in May 2001 completed a repair by Fragonset Railway, Derby, including a repaint into Direct Rail Services livery and re-entered traffic. In September 2005 33025, 33029, 33207 plus spares doner 33030 were sold by Direct Rail Services to the West Coast Railway Co.

Stabled in Hull Paragon station on the 31st July 2018 is Transpennine Express 185104.

Unit History

185104 is one of fifty one class 185 units built by Siemens in Germany and was delivered in 2006. Each class 185 vehicle is powered by a Cummins QSK19-R engine through a Voith 3 speed hydrodynamic transmission powering both axles on one bogie with the other bogie un-powered. The class 185 units are designed for quick acceleration and fast hill climbing and provide an improved service to the class 158 units they replaced due to the higher acceleration afforded by twice the power (2250 bhp versus 1050 bhp) compared to a three car class 158 unit.

Locomotive History

08607 was built at Derby Works as D3774 and entered traffic in June 1959, allocated to Burton although within weeks it had transferred to Derby. It would transfer to Aston in November 1960 moving to Saltley when Aston closed in 1965. It transferred to Doncaster in October 1971 and remained for almost twenty years. In July 1991 it transferred to Toton from where it was withdrawn in March 1996. In August 2000 the derelict hulk was moved to EMR Kingsbury and eventually broken up during February 2007.

Whilst on the train from York a further study of “Real Time Trains” I noticed I could catch 2K45 to Collingham and catch the Attenborough train from there, avoiding the walk across Newark.

Just four months after a classified repair at Derby Works a still rather smart looking 08745 shunts the carriage works sidings, Doncaster, 31st July 1976.

Locomotive History

Originally D3913 it was built at Crewe Works and entered traffic in November 1960 and was one of a batch of thirteen class 08’s (D3905 – D3917) delivered new to Glasgow Polmadie MPD. In May 1968 it transferred south to Thornaby and three years later in April 1971 it moved to Doncaster. It would spend the next fourteen years at Doncaster apart from a three month spell at Colchester from January 1975 and one wonders if it actually made the journey to Colchester. In May 1985 it transferred to Botanic Gardens and then became a bit of a wonderer with spells at Immingham, York, Neville Hill, Tinsley and Crewe from where it was withdrawn in circa 1999. It was eventually broken up by CF Booth, Rotherham during November 2012.

Northern 155342 approaches Brough working 2R91, 10:50 York – Hull, 31st July 2018.

Unit History

Forty two Diesel Multiple Units were built by British Leyland at Workington (using Leyland National bus components) between 1987 and 1988 as part of British Rail's replacement of its First-Generation Diesel Multiple Unit fleet. These two car units were classified as class 155. The last seven sets were funded by the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and were numbered 155341 – 155347 rather than following on from the last of the British Rail funded units 155335. In 1992 it was decided to convert the class 155 fleet into single car units by the addition of an additional cab and most were rebuilt by Hunslet – Barclay at Kilmarnock, becoming class 153. However the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive would not allow the seven units they had funded to be rebuilt so they have remained as two car class 155 units.

In April 1995 it was allocated to European Passenger Services and became 37607. It did little work over the next two years until sold to Direct Rail Services in June 1997 who operated it until 2017 when it was sold to Harry Needle. It is currently (September 2019) at Barrow Hill on decision.

31st July 2018:

I had to go into town this morning and had something in mind that I was going to use for my photo for today. The photo came out OK, although I think I can get a better one at some point.

As I was early I had a walk around the Town Hall and there to my delight were Sunflowers. Not the big ones that you see at the moment, but Sunflowers all the same. Any day of the week for a Sunflower, from Monday to Sunday, it's a Happy Day. I just love them.

The bright summer sunshine penetrating parts of the trainshed at York has made for some difficult lighting conditions to capture Gateshead allocated 40050 drifting through the station with a rake of Mark I coaching stock, 31st July 1976.

Locomotive History

40050 was built at the English Electric Vulcan Foundry works as D250 and entered traffic in December 1959, allocated to Gateshead MPD. It would remain a “North East” engine for the majority of its career with spells at Thornaby, York, Neville Hill and Healey Mills before transfer to Longsight in May 181 for its final couple of years of service. After almost twenty four years service it was withdrawn on the 8th August 1983 almost two years overdue classified repair and with scrap tyres. Following withdrawal it was dealt with quickly and was broken up at Doncaster Works three months after condemnation in November 1983.

A rather scruffy Holbeck allocated Peak 45020 departs northbound from York in some morning summer sunshine, 31st July 1976.

Locomotive History

45020 was built in Derby works as D26, entering traffic in April 1961 and was for most of its career a Leeds engine arriving at Holbeck in June 1961 and not leaving until May 1978 when transferred to York. The early days of the class 45 Peaks were not a good time and in mid December 1961 Darlington works was host to D11/12/15/16/26/28 for unclassified repairs. Its stay at York was brief and in January 1979 it transferred to Tinsley and its final transfer was in July 1983 when it moved to Toton from where it was withdrawn in December 1985. It would languish following withdrawal for nearly three years until broken up by Vic Berry, Leicester in August 1988.

45112 Royal Army Ordnance Corps has just passed through Long Eaton station and heads for Derby with a Midland Main Line express, 31st July 1980. The foot crossing I am standing at has now been replaced by an underpass and the football field and factory behind the train by housing.

Locomotive History

45112 was originally D61 and was to have been constructed at Derby works during the latter part of 1961, but the order for D50 - D67 was transferred to Crewe works and D61 was delivered during March 1962, allocated to Derby MPD. It was named Royal Army Ordnance Corps at Derby Works on the 14th September 1965. In 1973 the Midland Main Line services started to migrate from steam heating to electric heating of the coaching stock and D61 was one of fifty class 45 locomotives selected to have its steam heating boiler replaced with electric train heating equipment (a Brush BL100-30 ETH auxiliary alternator) and emerged from Derby Works in 1974 as 45112. After twenty five years service 45112 would fall victim to the large class 45/1 fleet reduction that took place in May 1987 when twelve were condemned (almost 25% of the Peaks modified with electric train heating). However 45112 escaped being broken up and was bought for preservation. Restored and based at Bury on the East Lancashire Railway during the 1990’s by 2001 it was active on the main line. This spell of main line running came to an end at the beginning of 2008 and was stored for a couple of months at Knottingley MPD before moving to Barrow Hill. In august 2011 it moved to Burton on Trent where it can be currently (November 2012) found.
