Of all the male dragonflies *here* that guard a territory, the Common Whitetail is one that perches most often, That is, it may make one or two passes over a 30 yard territory, and then it will perch. Next is the Flame Skimmer. And last, both the Green Mosaic and the Black Saddlebags who will remain in flight for five minutes or more. But the Mosaic (Blue-eyed) usually perches by hanging from a branch rather than sitting on top or at the end of a twig etc. I have one fairly good shot of a Mosaic hanging from a branch which I will post even though there was a lot of post-production fiddling to get rid of some branches, twigs, and just junk proving the point that, be it ever so humble, there's no place like home ... at least to dragonflies.
This is one of my first shots of a dragonfly and certainly one of the first with the initial Canon Powershots, the SX10. Sometimes, even 12 MP will do the job if you have enough light, can focus, don't have sweat pouring down your face and into the viewfinder, and the muses are with you (usually singing out of tune like a bad Greek tragedy).
