The beautiful east-west facing church was designed by János Melhouse in 1873-82 in the Romantic style. In 1936, a gallery was built in the church and a clock was added to the façade, making it a prominent building in Kálvin Square. The old church of Nyíregyháza from the second half of the 13th century stood on this site, the floor plan of which can be seen in the congregation hall next to the church.

Just a stone's throw from the Premier Travel Tiger was this former member of the fleet, which had been sold off when only two years old. Tiger / Paramount C331 PEW was new to Premier in 1986, and acquired by Ham's Travel in 1988. It stayed with them until 2001, so Premier's loss was very much their gain. It was just after the time when Premier had been acquired by AJS Holdings, so no doubt the new owners were thinning out the fleet a bit.

I couldn't work out what the smart cream Dommy was next to it, or why I hadn't taken a shot of it. Digging out my notebook, I now see that it was RYL 716R with Bryn Travel, Glan Conwy, so I had probably got it before.

A nice picture of Imperial Mansions in the late 1950's, once at the apex of St Giles High Street to the left and Charing Cross Road, to the right. When Centre Point was built, nearly all of these buildings were demolished and Charing Cross Road more or less ended where you see the gabled building, which is still there, adjacent to the bus.

N.B. This picture is part of a set showing how one of London's most famous streets used to look in the 20th century, before major demolition work started in the 1960's and more recently, due to the Crossrail development. To take a trip down the Charing Cross Road, starting at St Giles Circus in the north, click here www.flickr.com/photos/59082098@N05/sets/72157629469822347/ to see the Astoria when it was a Crosse & Blackwell pickle warehouse, the old Jacey news theatre and many other buildings, long since disappeared.

What we have here is the Chelydra serpentina or the common snapping turtle in my driveway in Richlands North Carolina. Snapping turtles have a geographic range that extends from the east coast of the United States almost all the to the west coast and even up in parts of Canada. Since turtles are ectotherms I was curious to know how the different temperatures would affect their ability to catch prey. Turns out that while the temperature does in fact decrease jaw velocity and acceleration, the snapping turtles in the northern most limits spend more time basking than their southern relatives. The basking helps warm them up enough to be able to catch mobile prey(Vervust et al 2011).

It's not every day we see a Baltimore oriole in our backyard. But this morning, Christmas Day, this girl was way up in a tree eating some red berry. Then she flew off.

We put out half an orange for her but she hasn't been back for it yet.

Reflections on Tioga Lake

A friend of mine who lives somewhere between New York City and Washington DC posted pictures a few days ago of his crop of potatoes! Mid-June and he has vegetables.

I checked my garden today and saw that three of seven rows of seed had sprouted. And most people have just planted their seed potatoes.

But today I also saw that a columbine that grew up between the cracks of our stone walk has bloomed. Spring has indeed arrived.
