Between the cab ends on platforms 1,2 & 4 at Manchester Piccadilly are stabled class 506 1500DC 3car emu's, M59608M, M59405M and M59602M, whilst on the left is class 31/4 locomotive 31426 and a Derby class 108 dmu.
The class 506's had exclusively worked the Manchester Piccadilly-Hadfield via Glossop services since June 1954, their last day of operation was approaching fast on the 7th December 1984 only a fortnight way.

Photographed double headed 31's at Cumwhinton whilst waiting for Leander on the 'Thames Clyde Express' from Kilmarnock. It seems one of the two 31's failed possibly at Kirkby Stephen and a third unrecorded 31 was available to assist as here south of Kirkby Stephen. The other two 31's were 31426 and 31445 and I assume this was the returning Nenta 'Cumbrian Explorer' railtour.

Scruffy BR Class 31 31426 at a shabby Marylebone station on a wet day in April 1986. The loco is hauling a rake of freshly-washed Mk 1 carriages in ‘Inter City’ livery as ECS from Old Oak Common, possibly for one of the BR ‘Shakespeare Special’ railtours run from Marylebone at this time..
The loco had entered service in 1960 at Stratford shed, as Brush Type 2 D5617, and became 31526 in 1990, and was withdrawn in 1995, and stored for a time at Meldon Quarry, and was renumbered back to 31426 in 2001, and finally scrapped in 2006.
Today (2025) the station is operated by Chiltern Railways, and has been modernised, with new platforms added, and is overall far cleaner and brighter.. The Class 31s were in mainline operation – later in departmental service – until 2017, and no less than 36 examples have been preserved...

Recorded in July 1990, the BR Table 83 09:44 Manchester Victoria to Llandudno comprised the customary collection of period stock and Class 31/4 31426 suitably weathered to match. The train had just called Prestatyn station and the trail of exhaust confirmed a 'spirited' re-start being made for the continuing journey along the North Wales coast line.

The emptiness and lack foot traffic, the absence of cars in front of this almost forgotten colorful building, such an unpopulated Saturday afternoon urban view in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, seems almost unreal for that neighborhood in the present day.
The “Phat Phace” logos on the building are by Phetus88. The editing of the photo is an attempt to recapture Edward Hopper's Early Sunday Morning,

Surprisingly 31426 has the down main with this local tripper returning to Peterborough or March. (What's the gen Mr C?).
