[EN] The Betuwe line, not te be confused with the Betuwe route, is secondary line between Elst and Tiel. Since 2005, this line is operated by private train operating companies. Arriva is responsible for the train services since 2012 and uses Stadler GTW DMU’s. It is just another Sunday when DMU 256 ‘Piet Oudolf’ runs between Arnhem and Tiel to move a handful of passengers. Near Valburg, a small town that had a station until 1938, I encountered this train and made a picture of this tiny train.

Locomotive History
50011 was originally D411 and was built by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry works, Newton-Le-Willows, entering traffic during March 1968 on West Coast Main Line duties north of Crewe. In February 1974 50011 was transferred to the Western Region and allocated to Bristol before moving to Laira three months later. In February 1978 it arrived at Doncaster works with accident damage and would not be released back into traffic until the 10th April 1979. The Western Region decided to name the class 50 locomotives after Royal Navy Warships and 50011 was named Centurion on the 17th August 1979, without ceremony, the plates being fitted at its home depot of Laira. The last HMS Centurion was a 23400 ton King George V class battleship launched in November 1911. It served through out World War One and was in action at the Battle of Jutland. Decommissioned in 1925 HMS Centurion was converted to a remote controlled target ship from and was used in this role until June 1927. At the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 HMS Centurion was still in existence and became a repair ship, followed by a spell as a dummy battleship (disguised as HMS Anson) during June 1942. HMS Centurion was eventually broken up in 1945 after being run aground as a breakwater at Normandy on 9th June 1944. In order to prolong the life expectancy of the class 50 fleet, a decision was taken to completely refurbish the class during the early 1980's, which involved removing various items from the original design. 50011 arrived at Doncaster Works during November 1982 and re-entered traffic in the BR Large-Logo livery during April 1983. In the end the refurbishment program proved to be an expensive luxury as less than four years later the rundown of the class started with the withdrawal of 50011 in February 1987. Following withdrawal 50011 was towed to Crewe works for use as a static generator and allocated the departmental number ADB968031, although this was never carried. It became unserviceable in this role in 1991 and was broken up by Texas metals on site at Crewe works in September 1992. 31421 was originally D5558 and was built by Brush at Loughborough in 1959. Under the 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme D5558 became 31140. During the 1970’s a number of class 31’s were fitted with electric train heating equipment for both secondary passenger duties and empty coaching stock duties between carriage depots and stations. 31140 was fitted with electric train heating and dual braking equipment during a classified repair at Doncaster works in the autumn of 1974. It was released into traffic in November 1974, renumbered 31421 and allocated to Cricklewood for empty coaching stock duties between Cricklewood and St Pancras. After thirty eight years service it was withdrawn in March 1997. Following withdrawal it was stored in Crewe South Yard for a number of years until moved to Carnforth in January 2003. This was followed in September 2003 with a move to the Midland Railway Centre at Swanwick. However preservation passed it by and in April 2007 it was transported by road to EMR Kingsbury and broken up in August 2007.

The approximate 195 tons trailing load of six Mark I vehicles plus the 109 tons of the locomotive is obviously on this occasion to much for the 1470 bhp available to 31421 to get it up the Lickey bank as it has picked up the two class 37 bankers to give it a shove up the hill. The class 31, 2x class 37 combination is seen here as they start to accelerate away from the standing start as they approach Bromsgrove station and the start of the bank, 14th April 1979.
Locomotive History
31421 was originally D5558 and was built in 1959. The class were built with even less powerful Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engines but the engines were not successful and in 1964 a programme of works commenced to re-engine the fleet with the more powerful 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine. Despite being somewhat underpowered it would give thirty eight years service and would remain in traffic until withdrawn in March 1997. Following withdrawal it was stored in Crewe South Yard for a number of years until moved to Carnforth in January 2003. This was followed in September 2003 with a move to the Midland Railway Centre at Swanwick.
