Matera after dark is lovely, the Sassi glints like an overflowing jewelry box and what seems like a confusing jumble of sun washed stone work during the day becomes pockets of magic at night. The construction details that run together under daylight are pronounced during the dark hours making the Sassi shine like an island of light in a sea of darkness.
Having come so far to visit Basilicata or if just dipping your toes into the Lucan waters by visiting Matera you deserve to make time to stroll the rim of the Sassi in the evening it is such an unforgettable sight and one not be overlooked on your visit. After strolling the rim do yourself a favor and walk down into the depths of this magical place and find a smell that captivates you or follow sound of clinking glasses to enjoy one of the many fine places to have a great meal.
The food of Matera much like the food of most of Southern Italy is cucina povera which means food of the poor and was developed from not having a lot but knowing how to get the most flavor from what they did have. Do yourself a big favor order Lucan dishes while you are visiting instead of the usual suspects like carbonara or vongole the chefs are proud of their cuisine and put a lot more love into their local dishes showcasing their ancient traditions and flavors.

30's | Enrico Brand Architecture | São Paulo
_____________________________________________
M42 in all its glory, this is a composite of two images one for the main part of the nebula and one for the core detail. Pretty pleased with this as it was captured in not the best conditions there was some high cloud when capturing the RGB.
I did capture some data with the luminance filter but never used it as it did not add anything I ended up using the Ha as the luminance layer.

Description:
The large nebula just lower left of center is known as The Tadpoles. It is an emission nebula and a star forming region located in the constellation Auriga. It is named for the two bright streams of gas that when zoomed in resemble tadpoles. The nebula is four million years old, and is approximately 12,000 light-years from Earth. Its diameter is about 100 light-years, and each tadpole is about 10 light-years long. At the center of the nebula is an open cluster (NGC1893) that shapes the nebula and drives the Sulphur-2, Hydrogen-alpha, and Oxygen-3 (SHO) emissions.
The smaller nebula just above and right of center is known as the Spider Nebula (SH2-234).
This image records the SHO emissions using a 3-nanometer narrowband filter set. The stars are rendered in naturally colored RGB.
This image is a single, un-mosiaced frame that was captured in a Bortle 6 suburban sky. Transparency as reported by Astrospheric was below average.

BNSF 2748 leads the Grand Rapids Local across the Prairie River between Gunn and Grand Rapids, MN on the evening of June 29, 2007. The Geeps on this day's Rapids was a solid consist of rebuilt BNSF GP30s with 2748, 2825, and 2435. Cool seeing a former CB&Q, GN, and Santa Fe GP30 set rolling along the former Great Northern.
The Grand Rapids Local of ten years ago meant trios of GPs. There was much more variety day to day, as Geeps were switched frequently in and out. Sometimes you would get lucky and get a cool consist like this. I was chasing the Rapids Local quite a bit this time as I lived an hour out of Superior, but this was the only time I saw a trio of 30s.

a) Leica M8 + Carl Zeiss Biogon ZM 25 mm f.2,8T* (+ Filtro Leica UV/IR);
b) Tempo Finale 1/30s apertura a f.3,2 (a mano libera);
c) Utilizzato il Magnifier 1,25x per effettuare una messa a fuoco più precisa;
d) Lettura Esposimetrica impostata in M (manuale) esterna effettuata con Sekonic DualSpot F-L-778 Angolo 1° (effettuate 4 misurazioni con metodo del Sistema Zonale di “Ansel Adams”) a luce riflessa e 1 lettura di equiparazione e bilanciamento con Esposimetro esterno Gossen Lunalite lettura a luce riflessa (con calotta inserita);
.
e) Esposizioni:
1)......la prima sulla superficie della tenda posta subito dopo il vetro dell’infisso (in particolare quella parte ricamata più chiara in corrispondenza del bordo superiore della sedia) ;
2)......la seconda (doppia) sia sulla guancia destra della ragazza e per equiparazione sulla guancia destra della bambola (il valore era molto simile la variazione era di 1/3 di stop) questa la ho posta sulla Zona V del grigio medio al 18% aumentato di 1/2 del valore;
3)......la terza sul tessuto della spalla desta della ragazza in primo piano. Questa parte di superfice era molto importante per la trama ricca di particolari e di zone chiare e scure;
4)......la quarta sui capelli della ragazza, in particolare il riflesso, ovvero la porzione illuminata della luce proveniente dal balcone che si trova a destra. (In questa porzione, dopo alcune letture di verifica, ho dato un valore n+2,5 rispetto al valore letto in quanto la luminanza della luce era filtrata da una tenda di colore Panna con striature marroni pertanto la luce oltre alla filtratura veniva assorbita e diffusa, il cielo non era particolarmente limpido ma parzialmente nuvoloso e pertanto avevamo una temperatura cromatica di quasi 6000°K);
5)......La media ottenuta dalle letture precedenti è stata confrontata con il valore t/d (tempo/diaframma) ottenuto dalla settima lettura effettuata con misurazione a luce riflessa sulla calotta superiore dell’esposimetro Gossen Lunalite posto parallelamente alla figura e con la calotta rivolta perpendicolarmente verso l’ottica di ripresa (l’esposimetro è stato posto fra il braccio sinistro della ragazza e la guancia della bambola);
f) Impostazione nel corpo camera Leica M8: ISO/ASA 160, DR (auto), WB (Bilanciamento del Bianco (auto), Saturazione Colore (Stadard), Nitidezza (Medio-Alto), Contrasto (Standard) Riduzione disturbo (0), Qualità Immagine (DNG), Dimensione Immagine compresso (3:2 – 10MB);
g) Tecnica di ripresa esposimetrica con il sistema dell”Esposizione a Destra;
h) Prima Post-Produzione per la correzione del bilanciamento cromatico/tonale delle varie aree e zone di colore per compensare la caduta di luce con Nikon Capture NX 2;
i) Seconda Post-Produzione con Adobe Photoshop CC2015 per il bilanciamento delle zone d’ombra;

avvolto… nasconde
una piccola anima
dolorante,
….si sentono, sparsi
nel profondo vuoto,
eterni lamenti
che implorano….
aiuto struggenti
… in frammenti.
Non è un bel giorno
come tant’altri,
c’è il mostro che
mi cerca,..…”vuole”…
a dir di lui giocare,
nervosamente attende.
Della mamma…
premuroso compagno
….agli occhi della gente.
La mia bambola,
è lei che m’aiuta,
muta compagnia di
orrende disavventure,
a volte di pochi momenti,
ma spesso
di molte ore.
Grida...occultate da
quella mano invadente
bagnata dal pianto,
lacrime d'odio e dolore
irrompono le mie tenebre,
imploro a Lui negazione
di quei terribili giochi,
osceni momenti,
ma al ricordo
di pacate e sue dolci parole
seguivano gravi voci,
minacce e
suadenti menzogne.
Convulsi spasmi di pianto
e dolore conducono
implacabili l'anima a
vani pensieri.
E’ Il gridare d'una sola notte?
no!….è un lamento costante
…..perenne.
False dolci parole..
…di conforto
rantolano morenti
tra crudele realtà, vivono
sofferenti e contorti
tormenti, dell'anima
mia affranta
deluse speranze,
illuse e tradite.
Senti il cuore impigliato e
squarciato da acuminati rovi
di false promesse...
Così…ho trovato la mia strada
apro d’un tratto
quell’uscio senza freni
vado via nell’immenso vuoto
chiudo gli occhi e nell’abbraccio
futuro della mamma mia
volo libera nell’aria
per andar a giocar con gli angeli.

of dark shadows,
a pale little face,
weep silent

a little soul
sore,
.... feel, scattered
in the deep void,
eternal lamentations

... Into fragments.
Not a good day
like so many others,
there is the monster that
I look, ... "he wants" ...
to tell him to play
nervously awaits.
Mother's ...
caring companion
.... in the eyes of the people.
My doll,
it is she who helps me,
company wetsuit
hideous misadventures,
in times of a few moments,
but often
of many hours.
Cries hidden by
that hand intrusive
wet with tears,
hate and pain tears
break my darkness,
implore Him denial
of those terrible games
obscene moments,
but to remember
of calm and his sweet words
they followed serious voices,
threats and
persuasive lies.
Convulsive spasms of crying
and pain, lead
implacable, the soul
vain thoughts.
And 'the shout of a single night?
No! ... it is a constant lament
…..perennial.
False sweet words ..
... comfort
rantolano dying
between cruel reality, live
sick and twisted
torments of the soul
my heartbroken
dashed hopes,
deceived and betrayed.
Feel the entangled heart and
torn by sharp thorns
of false promises ...
So ... I found my way
I open at once
that door without brakes
I go away empty immense
I close my eyes and embrace
future of my mom
free air flight
to go and play lo with the angels.

One of those rare times I include myself in a Milky Way panorama. This was taken back in April at Kalbarri National Park, about 6 hours north of Perth in Western Australia. The rock formation is known as Nature's Window and is the main attraction at the park along with the spectacular gorges.
"The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk is a branch church of the Roman Catholic parish of St. Peter and Paul and a former monastery church of the Monastery of the Brothers of Mercy on Svatopluk Street in Prostějov.
The site of today's church was occupied by the Municipal Court, also called Schellenberg's. In 1733, the court was purchased by the Order of the Brothers of Charity with the contribution of the family of the princes of Liechtenstein. The court was surrounded by a garden, to which land was purchased for the future monastery cemetery. The brothers first built a temporary hospital and a small chapel. After further expansion in 1739 and the opening of the hospital, talk began about building a monastery church. The initiative for its construction was given by the prior P. Narcis Schön and the implementation was financially supported by the Lichtensteins. Princess Elizabeth donated 10,000 florins. Between 1751 and 1755, the Church of St. John of Nepomuk was built according to the designs of Antonio E. Martinelli. It was solemnly consecrated on October 5, 1755 by the consecrating bishop of Olomouc, Jan Karl Leopold of Scherffenberg. This is evidenced by the Latin inscription above the main entrance. Even after the consecration, work on the interior decoration continued. In 1756, the organ, oratory and side altar of St. John of God, the founder of the Order of Brothers of Mercy, were built. Only in 1766 was the decoration completed by Italian masters whose names have not been preserved. The vaults and walls of the church were painted with frescoes by František Antonín Sebastini, the sculptures are mainly the work of Josef Schubert and the carvings by František Hirnl.
Prostějov (Czech pronunciation: [ˈproscɛjof]; German: Proßnitz, Yiddish: פראסטיץ Prostitz) is a city in the Olomouc Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 44,000 inhabitants. Today the city is known for its fashion industry and AČR special forces unit 601. skss based there. The centre of the town is historically significant and is protected by law as urban monument zone.
The first historical mention of the village Prostějovice is from 1141. By the middle of the 13th century, it had developed into an important market village. At that time, German settlers were invited here, who established a new settlement on the site of today's TG Masaryk Square, to which the rights of the original settlement were transferred. On March 27, 1390, Prostějov was granted the right of the annual market thanks to the lords of Kravaře, which in fact became a town. In the Hussite period, the promising development slowed down as the city suffered delays on both sides; the insufficiently fortified Prostějov became easy prey for the troops of Margrave Albrecht and was burned down in 1431. The prosperity of the city was brought about by the establishment of the Jewish city and especially after a year 1490 more than a century-old government of the Pernštejn families, whose property became the town. In 1495, the city began the construction of stone walls with four gates with bastions. Between 1521 and 1538, the townspeople built a Renaissance town hall.
At the end of the 16th century, the city became the property of the Liechtensteins, which resulted in the stagnation of the city's development. In Prostejov the year 1527 printer Kaspar Aorga printed the first book on Moravia. During the Thirty Years' War, the town was devastated and in 1697 a fire broke out, killing the town hall, the school and the church. Then the city began to acquire a Baroque character. Around the middle of the 17th century, mainly thanks to local Jews, the food, textile and clothing industries developed rapidly, and in 1858 the first Czech ready-to-wear clothing industry was founded in Prostějov - the factory of the Mandla brothers, which attracted new inhabitants. In the 1960s, Prostějov was connected by rail with Brno and Olomouc. The 19th and 20th centuries changed the face of the city in the style of historicism and Art Nouveau. Since the 20s and especially 30s, dominating the construction becoming in Prostejov functionalism.
Moravia (Czech: Morava [ˈmorava]; German: Mähren) is a historical region in the east of the Czech Republic and one of three historical Czech lands, with Bohemia and Czech Silesia.
The medieval and early modern Margraviate of Moravia was a crown land of the Lands of the Bohemian Crown from 1348 to 1918, an imperial state of the Holy Roman Empire from 1004 to 1806, a crown land of the Austrian Empire from 1804 to 1867, and a part of Austria-Hungary from 1867 to 1918. Moravia was one of the five lands of Czechoslovakia founded in 1918. In 1928 it was merged with Czech Silesia, and then dissolved in 1948 during the abolition of the land system following the communist coup d'état.
Its area of 22,623.41 km2 is home to about 3.2 million of the Czech Republic's 10.8 million inhabitants. The people are historically named Moravians, a subgroup of Czechs, the other group being called Bohemians. The land takes its name from the Morava river, which runs from its north to south, being its principal watercourse. Moravia's largest city and historical capital is Brno. Before being sacked by the Swedish army during the Thirty Years' War, Olomouc served as the Moravian capital, and it is still the seat of the Archdiocese of Olomouc. Until the expulsions after 1945, significant parts of Moravia were German speaking." - info from Wikipedia.
Summer 2019 I did a solo cycling tour across Europe through 12 countries over the course of 3 months. I began my adventure in Edinburgh, Scotland and finished in Florence, Italy cycling 8,816 km. During my trip I took 47,000 photos.

Standing strong against the odds. Yesterday as I was bundled from head to toe against the cold and winds, I looked down and saw this tiny little rosebud trying to blossom. It has been in the 20s at night here and rarely out of the upper 30s and low 40s so, I was truly amazed at the tenacity of this! This is a macro shot as the bud is really tiny. Amazing..just amazing what He does :) Working today, tomorrow and Wednesday. sigh lol!

There's a lake at the Fuorlca Surlej which would offer a nice reflexion of the Piz Roseg, its glacier, and the Milky Way. The emphasis here is on "would", two weeks ago the lake was still covered with snow and thus I had to change plans and I went for a full panorama shot instead.
The night sky in the Engadin valley is supposed to be one of the darkest in Switzerland, but on that particular night a certain glow remained in the sky, therefore the contrast in the Milky Way is not as strong as I was hoping for.

This necklace is made up entirely of 1920s glass bugle beads that were made in Toruń in northern Poland (then Pomerania). There are some unique shapes, and being made of glass, they are very heavy.
However, what is remarkable about these beyond their amazing and unusual looks, is their equally amazing and unusual history.
Between 1923 and 1939, these beads and millions like them were produced from a very successful workshop on the outskirts of Toruń and sent to fashion houses both locally and in cities like Prague, Vienna and Paris. Then, with the coming of Hitler's invasion of Poland and the Second World War, the owners of the workshop closed their doors. They took the beads they had in the workshop and buried them in boxes in the ground beneath the floor of the workshop and then fled, hoping to return to reclaim them some day. And so the beads remained buried beneath the flagstones throughout the Second World War when the workshop was razed, and beyond during the re-building of post-war Poland. Although still in possession of the land on which the workshop had stood, the owners and their descendants never returned to Toruń to claim them, and the beads became a thing of legend. Nearly seventy years later, descendants of the original owners returned to Toruń to live, and decided to see if there was any truth to the stories of 'buried treasure'. Much to their astonishment and delight, what they uncovered beneath the flagstones were thirty great boxes, still well preserved in the earth, of 1920s and 1930s glass bugle beads!
The beads were split up amongst a few relations, including friends of mine who are artists. Knowing how much I love vintage clothing, beads and the 1920s, they made me a gift of three stunning necklaces made from the bugle beads in the ten boxes they inherited. This is the 'Naszyjnik Różany' or 'Rose Necklace'.
The theme for "Looking Close… on Friday" is "beads", so I thought this necklace of buried treasure was a suitable choice.

I know that I am a bit late to the party, but here is my take of the close encounter of Mars with the Pleiades open cluster.
I would have loved to shoot this as a deepscape from a dark sky location with some nice landscape in the foreground, but first I was clouded out and when it finally cleared, I had to fly the other day and was only able to shoot from my light polluted backyard.
Sometimes, you have to take what you can, even if it means to shoot a reflection nebula under a bortle 5 sky. Hope I will have better conditions in 17 years, when this encounter will happen again.

I'm pretty proud of how this build turned out. Some highlights are the windows which took a lot tinkering to figure out, as well as the door which has the four indents. It has like 1/4 of a plate gap on each side so it doesn't fit perfectly, but it's close enough imo. I also tried to be a little more intentional with my use of texture and I like the balance that I was able to achieve in the stonework.
You can purchase the car in this build at Creations for Charity.

An eastbound Southern "C" train drops downgrade between Sunbright and Natural Tunnel, Va. on April 30, 1985. This large fill was previously a wooden trestle, filled in during the 20s and 30s I believe. By this time, NS was in charge, but at least on the head end of this train, no Thoroughbred units were there to "pollute" the scene.
The new eastern span of the Bay Bridge is eye catching at night; the lighting is even, at least above the deck. Good vantage points remain scarce.
Security is tighter on Yerba Buena Island these days. We were walking on Macalla Road when we told by a private security patrol (something I haven't seen before) to get back to public space. Maybe it's because the redevelopment of the island is theoretically breaking ground in 2014?

A pair of Grande GP30s work the Western Metals & Recycling spur along Oxford. This spur takes off from the Jointline at Military Junction and crosses busy Santa Fe Ave then drops down the spur along Oxford to work the plant. Seen here pulling up to Santa Fe once across they will rejoin the Jointline and continue south to Blakeland where they will continue their duties and switch out the lumber facility
