This compilation video showcasing one locomotive and this is in demand with two different trains in one single day. The locomotive seen in both videos is Ex Ghaziabad, Vadodara (BRC) WAP-7 # 30473 with Siemens Hotel Load and P\7 graphics on both sides. In first video this locomotive seen with famous NWR train from Jodhpur to Bandra, aka 12479 Suryanagari Superfast Express speeding through Gholvad. Train was slightly delayed by 25 minutes. After completing journey at Bandra, loco rushed to Dadar to take charge of yet another NWR train. Hence same locomotive captured again at Umbargam Road wherein it was accelerating after completing TSR with 12490 Dadar-Bikaner Superfast Express which runs via Palanpur, Bhildi. This means, this particular loco was quite busy on this day as it must have taken charge of Suryanagari Express from Ahmedabad Junction before its departure time of 03:55 AM and then after reaching Bandra, it rushed to Dadar (through Bandra slum line) to take charge of another train which was running 20 minutes behind him. Post reaching Dadar, it took charge of Bikaner Superfast till Ahmedabad which has arrival time of 10:05 PM. Post reaching ADI it must have taken rest if not assigned with other duty of Mumbai bound trains in night.

H15 30331 on Salisbury shed some time between March 1956 and March 1961.

Built in April 1906 as an F13 class it was rebuilt as an H15 in November 1924 and was withdrawn in March 1961 from Salisbury shed where it had spent all but 5 months of its life as an H15.

The S15 (freight), H15 (mixed traffic) and N15 (passenger) classes were basically similar 4-6-0s designed by Urie for the LSWR each with further batches to the improved design of Maunsell when he became CME for the Southern Railway.

The H15 class, however, was a more mixed bag as it incorporated rebuilds by both Urie and Maunsell of earlier Drummond-designed LSWR engines. The rebuilds retained their original numbers resulting in a class with a jumble of out-of-sequence numbers which were simply given the prefix '30' when taken over by BR:

30482-30491 were Urie's original design introduced in 1914 with running plate stepped over the cylinders.

30473-30478 and 30521-30524 were the Maunsell's improved versions of 1924 with a straight running plate.

30330-30334 were Maunsell's rebuilds of Drummond F13s with a straight running plate.

30335 was a Urie rebuild of the sole member of Drummond's E14 class with the running plate stepped over the cylinders.

The Urie and rebuilt Drummond engines had a smokebox of greater diameter than the boiler and straight smoke deflectors giving them a somewhat ungainly look while the Maunsell engines had tapered boilers with smokeboxes of the same diameter and smoke deflectors with the upper section angled inwards giving a more elegant look.

The rebuilds retained the Drummond eight-wheel 'water cart' tenders but in March 1956 30331 was given the Urie eight-wheel double-bogie tender, seen here, from N15 30744 'Maid of Astolat' which had been withdrawn in the January.

The photo came from the same source as 30473 posted a few back so may well be the same date, 7th September 1957. There is an H15 in the background in much the same position to 30477 in that other photo.

Working this week on another of his short transcriptions: All Through the Night (Old Welsh Melody) [listen here: www.contrebombarde.com/concerthall/music/30473 ], the kind of simple, heart-warming encores with which he used to conclude his blow your socks off recitals.

The first of Maunsell's development of the Urie H15 4-6-0 mixed traffic engines stands on its home shed, Eastleigh, on 7th September 1957.

Scanned from a colour negative that has not aged well, 30473 appears to be in lined green However, it is in lined black and the difference in shade between engine and tender is explained by the fact that the engine has not received a repaint since receiving lined black in January 1950 whereas the tender was repainted in September 1955 at which time it was attached to classmate 30485. The tender was transferred to 30473 at a heavy intermediate overhaul in the month before this photo, and at 5,200 gallons was higher than its original 5,000 gallon version.

Built in February 1924 at Eastleigh, 30473 was withdrawn in August 1959 after 1,182,612 miles and cut-up at Eastleigh the following month.

Its classmate beyond, 34077, was built in April 1924 and withdrawn in July 1959 after achieving 1,020,549 miles.

Recently ex works from the Midland Railway Centre carriage shops is Mark I Second Open (SO) M4816 and it is seen here stabled at Butterley, 30th December 2012.

Vehicle History

M4816 was built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. in 1959 as part of lot 30473. Unlike the more common Tourist Second Open (TSO) which feature 64 second class seats in an open plan layout (eight bays of four each side of a central aisle) the SO version had only 48 second class seats (eight bays of four one side but only two on the other side of a central aisle). Since entering preservation it has been modified internally, whilst one half of the vehicle internally is as built the other half has been converted to a bar. It is vacuum braked, dual heated and is running on BR1 bogies and was withdrawn from main line service around 1990.

Census

The 2 year old William A F Binns, born Worcester, was recorded on the 1901 census at Mayfield Villa, Gillam Street, in the Parish of St Barnabas, Worcester. This was the household of his parents, although only his father, William M, (aged 39 and an Art Superintendent at the Worcester Porcelain Works) was present on the night of the census. Elinor M. was staying in Burnham, Somerset, living with her widowed mother Margaret H Bird, (aged 58 and from Kidderminster, Worcestershire, who was living on own means). Elinor was aged 36 and from Worcester.

Their other children are:-

Barbara M……………aged 5.………..born Worcester

They also have two live in servants.

By the time of the 1911 census the 12 year old William Adam Ferrar was recorded as a Boarder at a School at Grove Road, Burnham, Somerset. His parents were recorded at The Hollies, Oulton Cross, Stone, Staffordshire. Father William Moore, is now an Earthenware Manufacturer.and is an Employer in his own right. Wife Elinor Margaret is 46. The couple have been married for 22 years and have had 4 children, of which only two were then still alive.None were at home when the 1911 census was taking place. It looks like the 15 year old Barbara is also at Boarding School, attending the Felixstowe Girls School, Upper Belgrave Road, Clifton, Bristol.

The death of the 21 year old William A F Binns was recorded in the Erpingham District of Norfolk that covers Mundesley in the April to June 1920 quarter.
