In what could be the last snowstorm of the season (for the south), London Sovereign's DLE 30261 turns off Grahame Park Way onto Bristol Avenue on a wintry morning during the cold snap in February.

The building behind the bus is the former RAF Officers Mess (originally London Aerodeome Hotel), now a listed structure and used as student accommodation. At least the listed status stops the greedy developers from building new flats there, which they are currently doing in just about every available space in Colindale.

The cast of the Mystery Plays on the High Street heading towards Steep Hill and beyond that Lincoln Cathedral, around and within which performances are held. In Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

The Lincoln Mystery Plays are based on the N-Town Plays (a cycle of 42 medieval Mystery plays from between 1450 and 1500) and were inspired by Keith Ramsay, who directed the productions every four years between 1978 and 2000. Throughout these years, Keith worked as translator, artistic director and performer. He developed a performance tradition and an important part of Lincoln life.

The Mystery Plays tell the story of mankind as seen through the eyes of a person from the Middle Ages. The plays are usually set between the birth of Christ and his crucifixion. The plays were written in Middle English, the language of the ordinary people of that time. These great guild productions flourished over 200 years in cities throughout the land until Cromwell and the Reformation ended the tradition.

Recently ex works and repainted in blue/grey livery is class 101 power/trailer twin E50218/E56407 standing in one of the north end bay platforms at Doncaster with a service for Hull, 11th July 1981.

Unit History

The class 101 DMU was built by Metro-Cammell at Washwood Heath and the initial vehicles were ordered early in 1955 with seven hundred and sixty vehicles built in total. Four hundred and sixty five vehicles were for the Eastern Region and North Eastern Region, one hundred and fifty nine vehicles for the Scottish Region and one hundred and thirty nine vehicles for the London Midland Region. They were formed into two, three or four vehicle sets. Almost identical in external design but with many more variations in vehicle type these units were destined to become the longest serving 1st generation DMU cars built, outlasting British Rail itself. From local branch lines in East Anglia to the North Wales coast, from Perth to Penzance in the far south-west, these units gave sterling service to all areas up to forty years. E50218 is a Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) (lot 30261) and entered traffic in July 1957 allocated to Sunderland for North East local duties. It formed part of an order of thirty six power/trailer two car sets and was originally paired with Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory (DTCL) E56070. It would spend its first twenty two years on North East local duties and was refurbished in November 1979 when it transferred to Hull Botanic Gardens. It was renumbered 53218 in May 1983, withdrawn in May 1989 and broken up in January 1992. Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory (DTCL) E56407 entered traffic in July 1958 allocated to Dundee for local Fife duties and was originally paired with Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) Sc51249. It would spend the next nineteen years in Scotland until transferred south in December 1977. It was refurbished in April 1979, renumbered 54407 in October 1983, withdrawn in September 1986 and broken up in February 1989.
