This is one of the longest migrating raptors in the planet. The annual migration covers around 22,000 Km - 30,000 km / 14-18,000 miles starting from Siberia / Northern Mongolia to India and onward to South Africa. From the coasts of India, they fly over the sea to Africa covering around 3-4000 kms nonstop without touching the ground for 5-6 days.
The birds are making a stopover briefly at a hill station near Mumbai for a couple of weeks and 100's of bird lovers like me make a visit to watch them and get some pictures.
These falcons seem to prefer these wild lavender fields where they hunt for insects and caterpillars. They spend sometime in them walking around and looking for insects. Such fields are spread over the lakebed and the birds keep flying between them.

Just a few minutes away from the city of Stockholm, the archipelago begins. With nearly 30,000 islands, islets and rocks - from Öregrund in the north to Landsort in the south - each with its own character. Rugged nature blends with wooded islands, rocky cliffs and sandy beaches. Enjoy tranquil coves or the open sea where waves can go high.

The Pinnacles are limestone formations within Nambung National Park, near the town of Cervantes, Western Australia (Wikipedia). These amazing natural limestone structures, were formed approximately 25,000 to 30,000 years ago. No one knows exactly how they were formed. One theory is the sea receded and left deposits of sea shells. Over time, winds removed the surrounding sand, leaving the pillars exposed to the elements (Australia's Coral Coast).

The last picture of 2022 - finally, a good shot of "THE" Amur Falcon - this has been a dream for years now.
The birds were hunted in very large numbers in North Eastern India by the tribes, but now its a major conservation story and the same tribes now act as guides for bird lovers and watchers. The annual Amur Falcon festival happens every year around end Oct and one can watch 1000's of these birds - I hope to make it in 2023.
The story is worth reading for those interested!

Gannet - Morus Bassanus
Bempton Cliffs
Double click to view
The gannets are large white birds with yellowish heads; black-tipped wings; and long bills. Northern gannets are the largest seabirds in the North Atlantic, having a wingspan of up to 2 metres (6.6 ft). The other two species occur in the temperate seas around southern Africa, southern Australia and New Zealand.
Gannets hunt fish by diving into the sea from a height and pursuing their prey underwater. Gannets have a number of adaptations which enable them to do this:
no external nostrils, they are located inside the mouth instead;
air sacs in the face and chest under the skin which act like bubble wrapping, cushioning the impact with the water;
positioning of the eyes far enough forward on the face for binocular vision, allowing them to judge distances accurately.
Gannets can dive from a height of 30 metres (98 ft), achieving speeds of 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) as they strike the water, enabling them to catch fish much deeper than most airborne birds.
The gannet's supposed capacity for eating large quantities of fish has led to gannet becoming a description of somebody with a voracious appetite.
Gannets are colonial breeders on islands and coasts, normally laying one chalky, blue egg. Gannets lack brood patches and they use their webbed feet to warm the eggs. It takes five years for gannets to reach maturity. First-year birds are completely black, and subsequent sub-adult plumages show increasing amounts of white.
The most important nesting ground for northern gannets is the United Kingdom with about two thirds of the world's population. These live mainly in Scotland, including the Shetland Isles. The rest of the world's population is divided between Canada, Ireland, Faroe Islands and Iceland, with small numbers in France (they are often seen in the Bay of Biscay), the Channel Islands, Norway and a single colony in Germany on Heligoland. The biggest northern gannet colony is on Scotland's Bass Rock; in 2014, this colony contained some 75,000 pairs. Sulasgeir off the coast of the Isle of Lewis, St. Kilda, Grassholm in Pembrokeshire, Bempton Cliffs in the East Riding of Yorkshire, Sceilig Bheag, Ireland and Bonaventure Island, Quebec are also important northern gannet breeding sites.
Young gannets were historically used as a food source, a tradition still practised in Ness, Scotland, where they are called guga. Like examples of continued traditional whale harvesting, the modern day hunting of gannet chicks results in great controversies as to whether it should continue to be afforded exemption from the ordinary protection afforded to sea birds in UK and EU law". The Ness hunt is currently limited to 2,000 chicks per year, and dates back at least to the Iron Age. The hunt is considered to be sustainable, as between 1902 and 2003 Gannet numbers in Scotland increased dramatically from 30,000 to 180,000.

Skjonghelleren is a 100 meter deep cave some 15 minutes drive from where I live. As you can see, the opening is pretty high. If people used to live in the gave is not proved, but it has obviously been an important shelter. Seal bones found in the cave is dated 30,000 years old. The seals have probably been taken there by their predators.

The American white ibis is most common in Florida, where over 30,000 have been counted in a single breeding colony. It also occurs throughout the Caribbean, on both coasts of Mexico (from Baja California southwards) and Central America, and as far south as Columbia and Venezuela. The non-breeding range extends further inland, reaching north to Virginia, and west to eastern Texas.

Some facts on flies...
Flies form one of the five most diverse insect orders, including about 150,000 described species in 150 families.
It's estimated that there are 30,000 species of fly in Australia, of which only 6400 have been described.
Flies can be distinguished from other insects because they have only one pair of functional wings. Almost all flies have mouthparts that are adapted for lapping or piercing and sucking.
A large component of the world's fly fauna is unique to Australia. Flies are ubiquitous and often abundant in Australian terrestrial ecosystems.
They perform important ecological functions such as nutrient recycling, predation and pollination, and their larvae are often parasitoids of other insects.
Many species of fly are regarded as a nuisance, including the bush fly (Musca vetustissima), mosquitoes, sandflies and blackflies.
Flies are responsible for the transmission of a wide variety of disease-causing micro-organisms in humans and animals.
Most of these diseases are absent from Australia, with exceptions such as dengue fever and some types of encephalitis.

A dragonfly’s eyes have about 30,000 lenses and a dragonfly can see all the way around it, but they don’t see details very well. (fact, a human eye only has one lens and sees better than a dragonfly, but only to the front and side of them.)
From the time a dragonfly egg hatches, it can live anywhere from six months to six years, but only about two months as an actual dragonfly. (fact, most of the time spent is as a nymph in the water before the dragonfly’s metamorphosis into a full grown dragonfly.)
In the old days, dragonflies would seek out bad kids and sew their mouths together with their claspers while they slept. Dragonflies were known as the devil’s darning needles. (myth – dragonflies don’t have pockets to carry the thread to the beds of sleeping wicked children.)

In a biogeographic definition, paramo is any intertropical mountain ecosystem, characterized by shrubby vegetation that generally occurs from altitudes of about 3,000 to 4,000 meters or up to 5,000 meters, that is, in regions above the forest line. continuous but still below the permanent snow line. It is found in East Africa, New Guinea, and Central and South America. However, since in each of these regions this ecosystem has a specific name, when discussing Paramos, we refer specifically to Andean Paramos.
In this strict sense of the term, all Paramos are located in the neotropical zone, mainly in northwestern South America, present in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador. The ecosystem occupies over 30,000 km² of South America and represents 7% of Ecuador's territory. In absolute terms, Colombia is home to 50% of the extent of Paramos (in its three branches of the Andes) and the largest Paramo in the world (Sumapaz).
Paramos' climate is characterized by wide daily fluctuations in temperature and humidity. In general, cold and humid, can undergo a sudden and drastic change in which temperatures fluctuate from below freezing to 30 ° C plus in a daily freeze-thaw cycle. High altitude in tropical locations produces a special, cold, low air density atmosphere that allows for greater dispersion of ultraviolet radiation (light and heat). This climate can be summed up in the phrase "winter every night and summer every day."
In Paramo ecosystems, soils are generally recent, of glacial and volcanic origin, and many are still in formation. Its structure is a combination of organic material that decomposes very slowly in cold weather with volcanic ash. They usually have low pH (acidity) because of the abundance of moisture and high content of organic matter. These characteristics contribute to soil water retention, which in turn is the basis of an essential environmental service: the constant storage and distribution of clean water to lower places.
The largest and most known area is the Páramo grass, which covers large areas of the mountain ranges. It extends from approximately 3,500 to 4,100 m in height, and is mainly composed of grasses and small shrubs.

The Alblasserwaard is bordered by rivers on all sides. To the north is the Lek, to the west runs the Noord and to the south the river Merwede. On the east side are the Merwede-Kanaal, the Linge and the Oude Zederik, together forming the boundary with Vijfheerenlanden. De village Kinderdijk, well-known from its windmills, is located at the northwest corner of the Alblasserwaard, where the Noord and the Lek joins.
Most of the Alblasserwaard is rural, but partially under the influence of the cities Rotterdam and Dordrecht on the borders of the area, the south and west are urbanized. The largest cities in the Alblasserwaard are Gorinchem, with 35,000 inhabitants, and Papendrecht with slightly over 30,000 people. Both are on the southern borders of the Alblasserwaard.
Maassluis now has more than 30,000 inhabitants, but once started as a small medieval village, Maeslantsluys. Early history Maassluis originated around 1340 as a settlement near a lock in a sea wall between the North Sea coast and Rotterdam. 'Maeslantsluys' was probably a rapidly growing settlement of some importance, because in 1365 there was already a ferry connection with Brielle. Maeslantsluys, which fell administratively under Maasland, became an independent municipality in 1614 and was given city rights in 1814. The village had a large number of sail and ship makers and rope makers. However, from the third quarter of the eighteenth century, Maassluis experienced a period of decline. The number of ships decreased and employment decreased. Poverty among the population was the result. Impulse Nieuwe Waterweg The opening of the Nieuwe Waterweg in 1872 provided a new impetus for the economic revival of Maassluis. Due to the new connection with the sea, towage in Maassluis flourished. In addition, Maassluis became an important hub for maritime reporting along the Nieuwe Waterweg. Fishing ships from Scheveningen also came to Maassluis to unload their cargo: until 1904, Scheveningen did not have its own port. However, in the twentieth century, fishing almost completely disappeared from Maassluis, partly due to a weak competitive position. From the 1930s onwards, the industry became an important employer, causing the population to grow rapidly again, to just under 32,000 inhabitants today.
This is one of my favourite views in the south-west, and is from the headland at Polruan in the south of Cornwall, looking back over the harbour at Fowey with the historic town of Fowey on the left. The deep water harbour is in a ria (or sunken river valley) and can accommodate ocean-going ships of well over 30,000 tons. The narrow entrance to the sheltered harbour is out of shot to the left of the picture.

Today is the day to celebrate one of the most majestic species to walk the earth. Its World Lion Day! Each year on August 10, lion lover’s around the globe use this day to bring awareness to the declining population of lions.
The lion species, also known as Panthera leo, is one of the largest species on earth. Typically weighing 300 to 550 pounds, the lion can vary from a light buff color to a deep reddish brown color. Surprisingly, there is also the rare white lion found in the wild. Easily recognized by it’s thick mane, the lion is also muscular and has a loud, deafening roar. Unfortunately, as majestic lions my seem, they are slowly disappearing.
As far back as 3 million years ago, lions roamed freely across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East . Today, lions are live freely in their natural habitat in only two locations, Africa and Asia. In addition, some lions are bred in captivity.
Lions are listed as a vulnerable species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Though they are not under the classification of an endangered species, they still face obstacles that endanger their survival.
Currently, there are about 30,000 to 100,000 lions left on earth. In the past few decades, lion populations have decreased almost by half. Trophy hunting and loss of natural habitat are the primary reasons for the diminishing lion population.

Of the photog who decided to cross the stream with his $30,000 worth of camera equipment. Back in 2015, a juvenile Bald Eagle showed up by the shores of Lake Ontario. The Eagle stayed at the location for more than two months, providing ample close-up views and photographing opportunities to hundreds of people. The stream meets Lake Ontario and the presence of Salmon in the stream most likely brought the Eagle in the first place. There's more to this photo than what meets the eye, but that remains untold for now. Ajax, Ontario.

Gyps fulvus
Following a decline in the 20th century as a result of wildlife poisoning, hunting and decreasing of food supplies, in recent years the species has increased dramatically in some areas, particularly in Spain, France and Portugal with the population in western Europe now numbering around 30,000 breeding pairs, 25,000 of which are found on the Iberian Peninsula. The eastern population of Griffon Vultures in Europe numbers around 600 pairs.
