Ethan Allen & the other revolutionaries would likely disagree with this misuse of this flag's quote reference to "Give me lIberty or give me death." After all, they risked their lives for "one nation under God with liberty and justice for all," not "liberty for me and mine."
The WWII concentration camp teen survivor, Viktor Frankl, went on to teach psychology and write widely. While lecturing in the USA he pointed out the importance of the Statue of Liberty. But he went on to say it was only half the value. The other half of human value should be marked by a Statue of Responsibility, because unbridled "liberty" simply tramples those unable to stop the "free expression" of others who are blind and deaf to the people they do not know.
The sentiment on this flag seems to raise "liberty" to the highest position and leave no room for responsibility or The Common Good. In a strange irony, the origins of the 2nd Amendment that is printed on this banner lie in protecting the whole nation against foreign aggression. But now the noisiest gun-rights advocates forget the nation and draw the boundaries of citizenship at the platted property lines of their land. They want to defend their own dwelling against all threats, foreign and domestic. According to this thinking, what began as a continent-sized nation is now an individual circle. The larger nation is the threat in such a worldview, not foreign powers. How odd that "the right to bear arms" is no longer about supporting the whole nation (with liberty and justice for all) against external threats and instead is a fight internal to the nation.
The February 15, 2022 court ruling against Remington gun maker for $73 million in damages to the families harmed by the Sandy Hook, CT elementary school massacre is one step toward recharacterizing guns and killing tools, not fashion assessories, lifestyle choices, or shortcuts to self-esteem. Bills under consideration in other states will make enforceable and punishable the negligent ownership of weapons: leaving them in reach of minors when resulting in harm caused would then fall on the shoulders of the owner.
