Job 2:11-13 (NLT)

Job’s Three Friends Share His Anguish

11 Three of Job's friends were Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. When they heard of the tragedy he had suffered, they got together and traveled from their homes to comfort and console him. 12 When they saw Job from a distance, they scarcely recognized him. Wailing loudly, they tore their robes and threw dust into the air over their heads to demonstrate their grief. 13 Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. And no one said a word, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words.

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:

Unspecified in Bible. I have set this scene in the late morning.

LIGHTING NOTES:

The sun is high overhead (on the left), casting shadowes to the right of figures & objects.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:

Job (sitting cross legged, on the right), Eliphaz the Temanite wears green robes & is siting next to Job.

Bildad the Shuhite wears blue robes & Zophar the Naamathite wears orange/red robes.

Elihu son of Barakel the Buzite, of the clan of Ram is walking towards Job & the others, wearing mustard yellow robes.

2 Golden Spiny Mice are asleep in the left foreground.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Although Elihu son of Barakel is not mentioned until Job chp 32, I have assume that he accompanied Job’s three friends on their visit to Job, and so include him in scenes right from chp 2.

The ground colour is the same as in previous scenes, since this picture takes place in the same location.

The robe colours of Job’s 4 friends were established in 2010 when I drew the first scene for the book of Job, which was “Job 38 - Job and the whirlwind”. Whilst I still wanted to keep similar colours that I used all those years ago, I believe it was right to increase the richness of the costumes, since Job was a very rich man & I imagine his friends were too.

I thought it might be nice to include the 2 sleeping Golden Spiny Mice in the left foreground just for fun! They are native to the region were Job lived.

Hearing about Job’s disasters, three of his friends—Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar met together and visited Job. “Eliphaz” is an Edomite name (Gen. 36:4), and as a Temanite he was from either Teman in Edom, known for its wisdom (Jer. 49:7; Obad. 8), or Tema in Arabia.

“Bildad” is not used elsewhere in the Bible, and Shuhite may suggest a relationship to Shuah, Abraham’s youngest son by Keturah (Gen. 25:2).

The name “Zophar” is used only in Job, and his lineage as a Naamathite is unknown, though some have suggested that Naamah, a Canaanite town inherited by Judah (Josh. 15:41), was his hometown.

Golden Spiny Mouse

The two sleeping, furry creatures in the bottom left corner are Acomys russatus (aka Golden Spiny Mouse), Order : Rodentia, Suborder : Sciurognathi, Family : Muridae, Subfamily : Murinae.

The golden spiny mouse (Acomys russatus) gets its name from the reddish-orange spiny fur that covers its body from head to tail. This coarse, inflexible fur is thought to protect it from predation. Aside from the golden fur that covers its head and upper parts, its flanks are yellow and its underside is pale. It has gray legs with pale feet and black soles. It is also described as having a small, but distinct white spot under each eye. It is often found in the wild missing a part or all of its tail because it is able to shed this as a defence mechanism. However, it is not known how this is done, how often it can occur, or under what conditions. It lives an average of three years in the wild. It is omnivorous and feeds on seeds, desert plants, snails, and insects. Living in desert regions, it is a xeric animal that obtains water from the plants that it eats and produces very concentrated urine in order to conserve water. A. russatus is naturally nocturnal.

The golden spiny mouse thrives in dry, hot deserts and is common in Egypt and much of the Middle East, including Jordan, Israel, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. It is limited to these areas because its metabolic rate is much slower than predicted for an animal of its size,[5] so it is unable to maintain a viable body temperature in colder environments where the temperature falls below 18 °C[6] and can live in temperatures as high as 42.5 °C.

A. russatus is also very good at conserving the little water it gets from its diet of insects and plants. It does this by producing extremely concentrated urine with urea content up to 4800 mM and chloride concentration up to 1500 mM. This means that it could survive drinking sea water, which is very rare in mammals.

I love this shot because there's a lot going on in it! Murali still in delivery stride, Pietersen getting down to sweep, and the short-leg fielder taking evasive action! Flintoff is backing up at the other end. You've also got the famous old Edgbaston scoreboard in the background.

Job 2:7-10 (NLT)

7 So Satan left the LORD's presence, and he struck Job with a terrible case of boils from head to foot.

8 Then Job scraped his skin with a piece of broken pottery as he sat among the ashes. 9 His wife said to him, "Are you still trying to maintain your integrity? Curse God and die."

10 But Job replied, "You talk like a godless woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?" So in all this, Job said nothing wrong.

LIGHTING NOTES:

Sunlight from above illuminates this scene.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:

Job sits cross-legged on the left. Job’s wife is on the right.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:

I decided to draw a simple background for this scene, to focus the viewer’s attention on Job & his wife. Job sits cross-legged on a pile of ash (see verse 8). You can see broken pottery all around him. He holds a piece in his hand. Notice that Job has discarded his ornate outer robe, which is before his wife, who is kneeling down, on the right. She is berating her husband with the cutting comment, "Are you still trying to maintain your integrity? Curse God and die." To be fair to the poor woman, she had just lost all her children, so was deep in anguish & grief herself.

I like the last part of verse 10 which states, "So in all this, Job said nothing wrong." He didn’t blame the Lord God for what had befallen him, which I suspect most of us would have in Job’s position!

Job 2:1-6 (NLT)

Job’s Second Test

1 One day the angels [1] came again to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan the Accuser came with them. 2 "Where have you come from?" the LORD asked Satan.

And Satan answered the LORD, "I have been going back and forth across the earth, watching everything that's going on."

3 Then the LORD asked Satan, "Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth—a man of complete integrity. He fears God and will have nothing to do with evil. And he has maintained his integrity, even though you persuaded me to harm him without cause."

4 Satan replied to the LORD, "Skin for skin—he blesses you only because you bless him. A man will give up everything he has to save his life. 5 But take away his health, and he will surely curse you to your face!"

6 "All right, do with him as you please," the LORD said to Satan. "But spare his life."

TIME OF DAY:

LIGHTING NOTES:

This scene takes place in heaven. The glory of the Lord God illuminates the scene with blinding brilliance.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:

The Lord God is sitting on a golden throne (we can only see his feet).

The Devil (Satan) is the figure in dark purple.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:

This simple scene focusses on the Devil’s (Satan’s) interactions in heaven with the Lord God. The design of the figures & their colouring comes from “Job 01 - Job’s first test - Scene 01 - The Lord & Satan talk”.

The word the Lord God uses in verse 3, which is translated into english as persuaded "... even though you persuaded me to harm him without cause." is the hebrew word çûwth (sû? transliteration), which can mean to incite (to a request, with accusative of person), allure, instigate (bad sense), entice. Properly it means, to prick, i.e. (figuratively) stimulate; by implication, to seduce:— move, persuade, provoke, remove, set on, stir up, take away, etc. From this the narrative would seem to suggest that the Lord instigated/sent the tragedies on Job, rather than the Devil (Satan) using his own power by himself.

In this second encounter between the Lord God & the Devil (Satan), the later points to Job’s health and seeks to attack that next. The Lord agrees to test Job in this area, but puts a limit on the Devil’s operations with the directive, "But spare his life."

Though Satan accused Job of having an ulterior motive in his worship (Job receiving riches, children, home, etc from the Lord), God threw this back at the Devil (ever the accuser), saying that Job had maintained his integrity, even when all his possessions had been taken away. Satan then implied that Job was only worshipping the Lord God because he had not yet given up his life. The phrase "Skin for skin!" was a proverbial saying, possibly about bartering or trading in animal skins. Satan’s accusation against Job was that a man would give all he has (his children, possessions, home, etc) in order to keep his own life. Satan thus insinuated that Job would willingly trade the "skins" (i.e. lives) of his own children in return that God would spare him his own "skin" (Job’s life). This Satanic implication was again that Job was selfish.

The Devil (Satan) then suggested that if Job were made to suffer physically, he would turn on God & curse Him to His face (the same accusation The Devil made in Job 1:11). The Devil will always think the worst of everyone else, because that is his fundamental starting point. He is utterly evil, and that evil always "colours" his thinking. The evil of the Devil manifested itself in the belief that without possessions & his health Job would have no reason to worship the Lord God. The Devil’s own evil intentions always manifest themselves, and imprint onto human beings motives. The idea that Job might enjoy worshipping God, &/or see that worship as the right & proper thing to do (regardless of what Job might get out of it!), would not occur to the Devil, since he himself had rejected his original purpose (see note below).

Surprisingly the Lord permitted Satan to afflict Job but not to kill him. God knew that Job would not deny Him.

What was the Devil’s original purpose?

Although not explicitly defined in the Bible, we can infer that the Devil’s original purpose was that of a mighty guardian cherub/angelic guardian (Ezekiel 38:14).

Many Bible scholars believe that the description found in Ezekiel chp 28 refers not to the human ruler of the city of Tyre, but to the Devil. This assumption is backed up by the fact that the human ruler of Tyre could not have been present in the garden of Eden (see Ezekiel 28:13).

Here is the description of the “king” of Tyre, who is assumed to be the Devil:

Ezekiel 28:11-17 (NLT)

11 Then this further message came to me from the LORD: 12 "Son of man, weep for the king of Tyre. Give him this message from the Sovereign LORD: You were the perfection of wisdom and beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God. Your clothing was adorned with every precious stone [2] —red carnelian, chrysolite, white moonstone, beryl, onyx, jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald—all beautifully crafted for you and set in the finest gold. They were given to you on the day you were created. 14 I ordained and anointed you as the mighty angelic guardian [3]. You had access to the holy mountain of God and walked among the stones of fire."

15 "You were blameless in all you did from the day you were created until the day evil was found in you. 16 Your great wealth filled you with violence, and you sinned. So I banished you from the mountain of God. I expelled you, O mighty guardian, from your place among the stones of fire. 17 Your heart was filled with pride because of all your beauty. You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendour. So I threw you to the earth and exposed you to the curious gaze of kings."

The identification of some of these gemstones is uncertain.
