In February 1944, visitors flocked to the Cooma Rodeo to see Australia's finest rough riders take on the local mountain brumbies. The 'star turn' that year was "Thunderbolt" a wild Brumby from the hills of Kosciusko. Alec Iverson photographed this enthusiastic group sitting on the railings at the height of the action.

The village of Shaping lies at the foot of the Cangshan mountain range at the northern end of Erhai Lake in Yunnan province, about 30km north of the ancient city of Dali. It is famous for its weekly Monday farmers market. The distinctive grey marble, known in China as Dali stone, is quarried at Shaping.

Happy birthday to those special people who have their once-in-four-years birthday today! It's also time to adjust our watches that keep dates. :/

For those who are not quite sure what the hype is all about, Epipheo studios has an amazing video on this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=56zlm9qhVGc

February 29, known as a leap day in the Gregorian calendar, is a date that occurs in most years that are evenly divisible by 4, such as 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016. Years that are evenly divisible by 100 do not contain a leap day, with the exception of years that are evenly divisible by 400, which do contain a leap day; thus 1900 did not contain a leap day while 2000 did. Years containing a leap day are called leap years. February 29 is the 60th day of the Gregorian calendar in such a year, with 306 days remaining until the end of that year.

Although most years of the modern calendar have 365 days, a complete revolution around the sun takes approximately 365 days and 6 hours. Every four years, during which an extra 24 hours have accumulated, one extra day is added to keep the count coordinated with the sun's apparent position.

It is, however, slightly inaccurate to calculate an additional 6 hours each year. A better approximation, derived from the Alfonsine tables, is that the Earth makes a complete revolution around the sun in 365 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes, and 16 seconds. To compensate for the difference, an end-of-century year is not a leap year unless it is also exactly divisible by 400. This means that the years 1600 and 2000 were leap years, as will be 2400 and 2800, but the years 1700, 1800 and 1900 were not, nor will be 2100, 2200 and 2300.

The Gregorian calendar repeats itself every 400 years, which is exactly 20,871 weeks including 97 leap days. Over this period, February 29 falls 13 times on a Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday; 14 times on a Friday or Saturday; and 15 times on a Monday or Wednesday.

Happy Leap Day Everyone!!

to celebrate the day - I decided I'd try to catch someone leaping, but hadn't accounted for being late home from work and it then being too dark outside!

so..... this is a partially simulated 'leap', onto the worktop of the kitchen.

does it meet the requirements for 'looking up'.....? not sure... maybe - as I was lying on the kitchen floor at the time!

(PS, there is a texture over this image, my kitchen isn't that grimy!!)

(PPS, daughter could have touched up the nails before leaping!!!)

'Thirty days hath September,

April, June and dull November

All the rest have 31

Excepting February 1 in 4

February then has one day more'.

Large round Hay bale, stranded in trees some twenty metres from Wimmera River where it came to rest after floating down river during Floods in January 2011, many bales have met a similar fate, some were a cause of concern when they backed up at bridge in Horsham

libby was dismissed early due to the storm, which so far has not produced much of anything. still mending from a cold and fever, i sent her in for a nap. i just heard snoring from behind her door. it made me happy she can rest.

Quality of this picture is making me seriously consider upgrading camera for carrying around.
