The Grade I Listed St Nicholas' Church, Kenilworth, Warwickshire.
The church is example of an English parish church in Perpendicular style with Tudor alterations, in the handsome red sandstone of the region. It sits right beside the Norman and medieval ruins of St Mary's Abbey, over which a large part of its graveyard now lies.
The earliest reference to a parish church on the site, though, as distinct from the church of St Mary's priory, is from Pope Nicholas' taxation records of 1291. The substantial tower and the north and south aisles were added in the 14th century. The original nave roof, lowered in 1580, was at a higher pitch than that which can be seen today; the line of the earlier roof can still be seen as a scar on the eastern face of the tower. The chancel roof was taken down and relaid in 1692 under the auspices of the then vicar, William Best, at a cost of £80. Raised galleries were erected in both of the nave aisles in the middle of the 18th century to accommodate the large congregations of the time.
As with so many English parish churches, the reign of Queen Victoria saw many changes: in 1865, under Reverend Bickmore, St Nicholas' was thoroughly restored. The nave galleries were taken down in 1876, the same year that the roof timbers were exposed by the removal of the church's flat ceilings. It was also in the 19th century that the north and south transepts were built, the clergy vestry was added, and the south wall of the chancel was pierced to create a chancel aisle (refurnished in 1932 as the Lady Chapel). The sandstone spire was entirely rebuilt after a lightning strike in 1858.
On a sunny (but cold) February 12th 2012 I spend part of day watching trains with my son. At one of our favorite locations (both in winter as well as in the summer) we saw a class 143 engine passing the bridge over lake Templin with a regional train to Berlin Schönefeld airport.

EVERATT Edward. Air Mechanic 2nd Class 162881, Royal Air Force died 19th April 1921 aged 20. Son of Henry and Mary Elizabeth Everatt, of 2, Station Rd., Strensall. Commemorated on Strensall War Memorial, Yorkshire, at rest in St Mary's Churchyard, Strensall, Yorkshire.
HODGSON Percy Donald. Gunner 775534, B Battery, 245th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery died of wounds 11th May 1918 aged 21, Son of Edwin Booker Hodgson and Louisa Hodgson, of Strensall, Yorkshire. Commemorated on Strensall War Memorial, Yorkshire at rest in Esquelbecq Military Cemetery, Nord France.
BROWN William Henry. Quartermaster Sergeant 13845, 11th West Yorkshire Regiment. Killed in France 27th September 1916 aged 21. Son of William Henry and Fanny of Hook House, Strensall, Yorkshire. (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) He lived at Strensall, Yorkshire, died in France 27th September 1916. His effects went to his mother, Fanny.Commemorated on Strensall War Memorial, Yorkshire, at rest in Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz, Somme, France.
COATES William. Private 63236, 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment , formerly 27904, Yorkshire Regiment . Died of wounds 25th October 1916 aged 29. Son of Edwin and Jane Hannah, nee Adamson of Pottery Lane, Strensall. Some notes from what remains of his army records. He joined up at Richmond, Yorkshire 12th May 1916 aged 27 and 1 month. He lived at Pottery Lane, Strensall, Yorkshire with his parents. Prior to enlistment he worked as a farm labourer, previously served as Able Seaman 233399, Royal Navy for 10 years. He embarked for France on the 21st September 1916, received a gun shot wound to his left scapula in France on the 8th October 1918. Invalided to Hudersfield War Hospital, Yorkshire and admitted on the 13th October. He died of his wounds in this hospital on the 25th October 1918. He joined the Royal Navy on the 14th April 1907 for a period of 12 years. He was born on the 14th April 1889 at Leeds, Yorkshire. Son of Fred and Hannah Scholes, of Haxby, near Yorkshire, husband of Florence Jane, (nee Beadle), of Back Lane, Strensall, Yorkshire. In 1911 he was living with his wife and daughter, Hilda, aged 1 year at 31 Newby Street, Ripon, Yorkshire. Occupation, Railway Platelayer.

HEBB Nathan John William. Private 350, D Coy, 19th Durham Light Infantry killed in action 27th May 1918 aged 24. Son of Eliza Parrot (formerly Hebb), (nee Lazenby), of Strensall, York, and the late Nathan William Hebb. Born at Beverley, Yorkshire. Born at Beverley, Yorkshire, at rest in Hedauville Communal Cemetery, Extension, Somme, France, four miles North West of Albert, France.
Some notes from what remains of his army records.
He joined up at Hull, Yorkshire on the 15th June 1916 aged 19 and 9 months, occupation, farm hand. He was living at 29 Green Lane, Hull with his mother Eliza Parrott and stepfather. They previously lived at at Balaby's Yard, Strensall, Yorkshire. He embarked for France on the 2nd December 1916 disembarking the same day at Etaples. He joined the 15th Battalion at Etaples from Base Depot, on the 1st December 1916, later posted to the 10th Battalion on the 13th December 1916. He was wounded in the right thigh by gun shot whilst in action at Etaples on the 9th April 1917. Treated at 43rd Casualty Clearing Station, then at 20th Casualty Clearing Station, at some date transferred to No 7 Canadian General Hospital, Etaples. On the 17th April 1917 he was invalided to England on Hospital Ship, Cambria. He was admitted into No 4 Northern General Hospital, Lincoln on the 20th April 1917 and discharged fit for war service on the 16th May 1917 and posted to the Depot. He embarked from Folkestone on the 18th July 1917 disembarking the same day at Boulogne. He was posted to the 11th battalion on the 18th July, on the 25th September 1917 posted to the 19th battalion and joined his battalion in the field from Base Depot on the 29th September 1917. On the 27th May 1918 he was killed in action in France.
CULSHAW, Alfred William. Pilot Officer, Pilot 55480, 96 Squadron, Royal Air Force died 14th June 1945 aged 26. Son of Alfred Henry Douglas and Dorothy Yeates nee Hogarth. Husband of Murial Culshaw of Strensall, Yorkshire. He was married in 1940 to Murial Rosher. At rest in Delhi War Cemetery, India.
KILKENNY, John Bernard. Corporal 4753263, York and Lancaster Regiment died 7th October 1945. Son of John and Alice Kilkenny,of Strensall. At rest in Adwick-Le-Street Cemetery, Yorkshire.
NEWSUM Gordon Herbert. Major 85307, 4th Lincolnshire Regiment died 17th November 1944 aged 29. Son of Herbert Edward and Doris Irene Newsum, husband of Gertrude Bettine Newsum, of Strensall, Yorkshire. At rest in Nederweert War Cemetery, Limburg, Netherlands.

Supposedly, Machine Gun Kelly was re-arrested here by South Hill's sole policeman after escaping from prison in North Carolina in 1940. Machine Gun Kelly, however, was in Alcatraz at the time. He had been arrested in 1933 and spent the rest of his life in prison.
What has likely happened is that over the years, Roy Kelly (the man arrested in South Hill) has become conflated with George Kelly Barnes, aka Machine Gun Kelly. Evidently, Roy Kelly referred to himself as the Second Machine Gun Kelly, as per the following entry on www.temple-genealogy.com/b1380.htm

Temple provided by Conrad's granddaughter, Jo Satterfield. In January 1920 he was a farmer in Dinwiddie Co., VA.23386 In April 1930 Conrad was a municipal policeman in South Hill, Mecklenburg, VA.28816 He responsible for the capture of Rob Kelly, Public Enemy # 1 about 1939 in Mecklenburg Co., VA.37242 In 1942 he was an employee of Solvay Process Company in Hopewell, Hopewell City, VA.28818 Conrad died on 4 January 1943 in Petersburg, Petersburg, VA.8574 Died from lung problems due to a mustard gas attack in World War I. Buried in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, VA. Conrad apparently had no given middle name. He made up the name Lilleton for a job questionnaire. This fact is from his daughter, Inez.
His granddaughter, Jo Satterfield, reported the following anecdote: "My grandfather, Conrad, was the chief of police in South Hill, VA during the Depression Years. He got a call from the Charlotte Courthouse late one Saturday afternoon that Public Enemy #1 Roy Kelly (he liked to call himself the Second Machine Gun Kelly) had been spotted headed toward South Hill in a 2 door Ford. Grandpa then called the service station on the outskirts of town and asked them to be on the lookout for this car. Newspaper accounts state that within a few minutes an attendant came up the street and told grandpa that Kelly was at the station. Grandpa went and found the car, which was parked in the lot next to the Horseshoe Restaurant. Here family history and newspaper accounts diverge. Grandma always told it this way: Grandpa looked at the car (the door was open) and saw a gun lying on the seat. He stood behind a billboard and waited until a man matching Kelly's description came out. Grandpa said "Put up your hands, Kelly." Kelly responded with "There must be a mistake. I am Clyde A. Harris of Statesville, NC." Grandpa said, "Well, you might be, but you are driving Roy Kelly's car." Grandpa told the reporters that it seemed like an hour before Kelly complied and he took him into custody. Kelly had shot and killed two policemen in NC on his way north. Grandma said that this was when State Trooper Bagley appeared and they took Kelly to the little jailhouse in South Hill. Bagley always said that he made the capture, but according to my mom, the townspeople that were there gave the credit to Grandpa. He died about 4 years later of lung problems from mustard gas in WWI. Brick Lane (bengalí: ব্রিক লেন) es una larga calle del barrio londinense de Tower Hamlets, en el East End.
La calle pasa por Swanfield Street –al norte de Bethnal Green-, cruza Bethnal Green Road, a través de Spitalfields y enlaza con Whitechapel High Street por el sur a través de Osborn Street. Hoy es el corazón de la comunidad blangladesí de la ciudad de Londres, por lo que la calle es conocida localmente como Banglatown. Anteriormente la calle se llamaba Whitechapel Lane. Su nombre actual deriva de la antigua elaboración de ladrillos y tejas que se inició en el siglo XV y empleaba los yacimientos de arcilla locales.
El arte urbano se ha convertido en uno de los mayores atractivos de Brick lane. Cualquier visitante puede encontrar una selección de alta calidad de arte de la calle. Es el epicentro del arte urbano en la ciudad. Artistas de todo el mundo se citan aquí para pintar, con la certeza de encontrar un público agradecido y un gran atractivo.

Destacan por su contenido las calles Osborne Street, Brick Lane, Princelet, Hanbury Street pero todo es cambiante a lo largo del tiempo al ser un arte callejero y por tanto efímero. Princelet St. es también el antiguo centro de los hugonotes que se establecieron en el East End en la década de 1700. Las casas de la zona son de esta época y muy singulares. Hanbury Street se ha vuelto icónica, este lugar atrae a lo más granado del arte urbano y muchos artistas han pintado este lugar como los conocidos

Continuando por Brick Lane entramos en la Truman Brewery particularmente ocupada durante el fin de semana debido a los mercadillos de comida en la calle y a los bares y restaurantes de curry en la noche. El patio en la parte trasera del edificio, al que se puede acceder desde Brick Lane a través de un pequeño callejón, cuenta con interesantes muestras de arte urbano. Y un montón de lugares para sentarse y relajarse. El paseo se alarga hacia el norte por los alrededores de la estación de Shoreditch High Street donde encontramos multitud de muestras de arte urbano de conocidos grafiteros como
