This Bullsnake - a northern prairie dweller and subspecies of the Gopher Snake - was doing everything possible to convince us it was a rattler, including hissing and vibrating its tail against the ground. A very impressive, very beautiful snake. They can grow as large as eight feet in length, and kill their prey by constriction. Despite the fearsome appearance, these reptiles are harmless to humans.

ANSH 120 #18 "Roots"
These are the roots of a small Plumeria tree I was about to put into a bigger pot. Right now the tree is only about 14" (36cm) tall. I keep all my plumerias in pots until they get too large to lift - that lets me keep them safe from the more frequent freezes we've had recently.

Avocet
Scientific name
Recurvirostra avosetta
A scarce wader, the avocet is about the same size as an oystercatcher, but much more slender. It feeds on aquatic insects, worms and crustaceans, which it finds by sweeping its bill from side-to-side in shallow water. It is often seen on estuaries and mudflats at the coast where it breeds on exposed mud in a dug-out scrape.
Unloading three at a time, they do really well with just a seven man dock crew........
