Another California Quail from Mt. Diablo, only this time a closely cropped portrait. These birds are beautiful. As with pheasants, I don't know how people can shoot them. Many things in life I don't understand even or especially now. California Quail mate for life. Take that into consideration the next time your see a pair.

Primarily a California (Baja included) bird, the California Quail (Callipepla californica), also known as the California valley quail or valley quail, is a small ground-dwelling bird in the New World quail family. These birds have a curving crest or plume, made of six feathers, that droops forward: black in males and brown in females; the flanks are brown with white streaks.

A little snow but very cold walking around the lake. There were still some nice colors on the trees to be found.

I recently watched the American Coots and their chicks for quite awhile at one of the local regional parks I frequent. I saw this particular behavior several times: parent coot grabs a chick by the back of the neck and roughs it up. I had no idea. There was more than one coot family - I wondered if the chicks got mixed up, etc. So, I researched a bit - I found one rather elaborate study that included this behavior and it was labeled "tousling". Evidently, the parents try to control the overeaters (or early hatchlings) so the others can catch up. (In a nutshell...) ... No wonder they grow up to be bullies.
