I became enamored with Lobelia long before redicovering Ruth Bancroft Garden. Although the first time I came upon this beauty, three hummingbirds were vigorously feeding from bushes that had hundreds of flowers, and I found then in Washington state. I still womdered about the ID since these are mostly southwest and Mexican and couther Texas plants. But it was confirmed by the local nursery that reminded me in today's world, plants have many more ways to be spread than what was in the 1964 book I was using.

Lobelia laxiflora is a species of flowering plant in the family Campanulaceae. It is native to the Americas, where it is distributed in South, Central, and North America as far north as Arizona in the United States. It is known by several English-language common names, including Mexican lobelia, Sierra Madre lobelia, Mexican cardinalflower, looseflowers lobelia, and drooping lobelia. In Spanish and Nahuatl it is known as aretitos, acaxóchitl, and chilpanxóchitl.

In general, this is a perennial herb, subshrub, or shrub usually growing up to about 1.5 meters in maximum height, but known to reach 3 meters. The leaves vary in shape, size, and texture. The inflorescence is a raceme up to 40 centimeters long bearing leaflike bracts and several flowers. The flower may be over 6 centimeters long including its tubular base and corolla with narrow, spreading lobes. It is usually red, sometimes yellowish. The anthers protrude from the corolla. The plant produces seeds and also spreads via underground runners. Usually, and this is just a personal observation, when a plant spread via runners, it is often classified as invasive. But to me, plants are invasive if they are allowed to invade large areas. If it can be controlled in a garden, that is a different story. Besides, do nurseries actually see invasive plants? (Or, if they don't, why could I buy Scotch Broom which took over my "back 40" in two years? It took me two summers to get rid of it: it attracted as many beeds as privets.
