NGC 253, also called the Sculptor galaxy. For a galaxy it is relatively close to us at 11.6 million light years and rather large at 27 minutes 30 seconds (roughly ½ the width of your little finger if you hold it at arm’s length up in the night sky).
The Sculptor Galaxy is a starburst galaxy and was discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1783. Ironically she was looking for comets when she discovered this galaxy. The starburst galaxy designation means the galaxy is undergoing rapid star formation, at a much higher rate than most galaxies. One of the most prominent features of this galaxy is the complex dust lanes scattered throughout it, in addition to the blueish colour signifying a galaxy rich in gas. Speculation suggests that a gas rich galaxy collided with the Sculptor Galaxy over 200 million years ago, and this was the primary catalyst for the resulting state we observe the galaxy in. This image was taken on my first night using this new scope so my collimation was slightly out and I had to crop off about 20%.

Para no hacer un monográfico de Capçanes – cosa que al fin y al cabo acabamos haciendo al día siguiente … –, una vez pasada la 253 de Comsa, el primer TECO de ECR y el primer carbonero de renfe, cogimos el regional Mora la Nova – Barcelona de las 12:35 y nos fuimos a Marçá, a un sitio que había descubierto unas semanas antes y que me había anotado como plausible para un día nublado. Llegar al lugar en cuestión nos supuso acabar con los pies empapados por culpa de la nieve, que nos los cubría por completo, pero mereció la pena, ya que aunque no tenía nada que ver con Capçanes se podían hacer unas fotos medianamente aceptables a pie de vía. El caso es que allí estuvimos hasta las 15, hora en que cambiamos de nuevo de ubicación, y entre mercancías y mercancías de renfe apareció de nuevo la Traxx regresando para Constantí.

Arrive there meant to end up with our feet soaked because of the snow but it was worth the effort, because although it was not Capçanes we could make good pictures near the track. We were there until 3 pm, when we changed of place again, and between renfe freight trains came again Comsa’s Traxx returning to Constantí.

NGC 253 is a spiral galaxy in the Sculptor constellation, around 11 million light years from earth.
From our vantage point on earth, we view the galaxy slightly edge-on; which really allows us to see all the intricacies within the various dust lanes throughout the galactic disk. Quite the view!
