I've been waiting this summer for the Monarchs to come hang out in my flowering front yard and they're just nowhere to be found. But today, to my horror, I saw one madly fluttering, ensnared in a spider web. Frantic to rescue it, I ran and got a rake to break the web. The butterfly fell to the ground, but picked up stuff in the remnants of the web strands and just couldn't get more than a few inches into the air before falling again. I finally captured it and carefully pulled all the crud loose. Then a wondrous thing - as I released it into the air, it fluttered off, joining up with a buddy, and they fluttered off together. True story. (This image, then, is actually from 2018, not the rescuee.)
