One of the first images I uploaded to Flickr 15 years ago almost to the day, has been given a minor wash and brush up for this latest outing.

Sulzer class 25 'Rat' unit 25107 is captured rolling in to Crewe station with an unidentified mixed vans working. With the ex-GWR 'Siphon G' just behind the loco, and the pair of BR GUVs behind that, the working is almost certainly a parcels or mail train.

At the time Crewe station was something of a honey-pot for rail enthusiasts - all mainline expresses were locomotive hauled, mail and parcels in transit often cluttered the platforms, the station was busy enough to employ at least one class 08 shunter on duty (and often two), the station layout was still haphazard, interesting, and very photogenic. Of course, this was all before the £14m track rationalisation project in the mid-1980s which saw five platforms taken out of service on the west side of the station, and the approaches realigned for 80mph through-running with faster alignments for stopping trains. It's interesting to note too that the class 40s, while widespread in the North and in Scotland, were long synonymous with Crewe and, at the start of 1978, 184 of the 200 built were still in service.

In this shot the complexity of the track layout pre-rationalisation is evident, including quite a bit of bullhead rail too.

Processed to try retain the filmic feel of the day, the original upload has been deleted.

Update: My Locoshed books from 77/78 suggest 25107 was a Toton-allocated unit at the time, so I'm wondering if this was a parcels train from the East Midlands?

Cardiff, 20th January 2016.

The summer timetable in the 70s was one to be relished. Particularly so for railfans in the Nottingham, Derby, and Leicester areas where "The Jolly Fisherman" seaside specials to Skegness invariably produced a double-headed pair of class 20s or class 25s hauling a rake of mark 1s that had been hidden away somewhere for the winter months.

In this shot, taken from the signal box, a pair of 25s (25127 leading and 25107) slow for the Attenborough stop with, I'm guessing, the working from Leicester on the morning of 28th August 1977.

It would only have been a few years before when the similar working from Derby regularly produced a set of mark 1's still in the maroon livery.

The facing crossover gave access to the Chilwell MOD by way of a rail-link through the present retail park. For those who know the area the traffic lights are more or less where the sidings lay and this point was crossed by a cheap and cheerful roadbridge carrying the A453 - part of my running route when I was a little fitter (and younger) !

This is the island of the fishermen, an excellent place to have lunch

25107 backs onto a train at Birmingham New St station. 25-05-74.

Owned by Powys County Council but operated by Stagecoach South Wales, 25017 [YJ61 MMO] was the first of six new Optare Tempo's to enter service in February 2012 for the extended T4 Traws Cymru route from Newtown to Cardiff. It is photographed in April 2012 heading southbound on the A470 towards Merthyr Tydfil.

These buses are double glazed with full climate control and have high backed, leather trimmed executive coach type seats. There are two tables to the rear with fore and aft facing seats; beneath each table is a twin, 240 volt power point and Wi-Fi is provided throughout the vehicle. A GPRS controlled real time passenger information system is fitted as is an induction loop system to help the hearing impaired. Security is provided by an eight camera CCTV surveillance system.

About to plunge into the western end of the 2 mile and 346 yard long Disley Tunnel, is two tone green liveried class 25 locomotive D5257 (25107) with its train of empty PHV ICI bogie hopper wagons on the afternoon Nothwich-Tunstead working. captured on what was then a freight only route that is now part of the Hope Valley line to Sheffield.
