It was a grim day when we decided to have a day out in Ludlow. Parking out of town and walking in over the railway bridge there was the distinctive lazy puttering of a class 25. That loco was 25027 working the 12.00 Crewe Cardiff train. For such a lovely town as Ludlow the station always seems a bit of an architectural disappointment, it did have some Victorian buildings but they were demolished in the late 1960's. Photo 26/09/1980

Class 25 25027 was heading for the DCE sidings to the North of Carnforth station with a mixed rake of open wagons on April 17th 1978.
The loco had been built at Darlington as D5177 in February 1963. It was renumbered to 25027 in January 1973 and lasted in service for just over twenty years, it's official withdrawal date being May 8th 1983. 25027 was scrapped by Berry's of Leicester in September 1987.
4 April 1980 sees 40113 and 76001 stabled by the side of the shed. Taken from a footpath which ran parallel to the depot.
In the light of the popularity of this photo, I've dug out my old notebook which reveals that on this day Reddish was also host to 25027/047, 40013/032/106, 47192/344/490 and 76002/003/004/011/012/015/024/027/028/035/038/043/048/049/050/052/055/056/057. Of these, 40106 and 47192 survive in preservation, whilst 47490 (as 47768) is stored by West Coast at Carnforth.

25027 heading the 11:50 Cardiff to Crewe across the Usk River Bridge at at Newport on 14th February 1981. Outshopped from Darlington Works as D5177 in February 1963, the locomotive was boiler fitted and was initially allocated to Leeds Holbeck (55A) and used on passenger work, both local and longer distance workings. She received the uprated 1,250hp engine, but retained the Class 24 electrics. Withdrawn from BR service in May 1983.

20076 (TI) - Holgate footbridge / Sidings {York] - 1602 (Un-identified trip working to Dringhouses Yrad [probably from Scarborough due to the load], which was formed of 28 discharged oil tanks & empty HTV coal hoppers & a Brake Van on the rear) - 02/08/82.
During a spell of 6 hours that afternoon I photographed (probably missed more) lots of passenger & freight trains hauled by nine different classes of locomotives (08. 20, 25, 31, 37, 40, 45, 46, & 47) and a bonus Class 50 light engine working, starting with the oldest "Rat" still in service at the time, 25027 hauling a Tamper to York Leeman Road at 1313:-

I think I have said before these were my favourite platforms in Scotland as you could get nearly any class of loco in them.
Here on the 27th of March 1982 we have in the bay platforms 26025 waiting to depart with the 15.30 to Glasgow service, 25027 waiting to depart on the 15.20 service to Edinburgh and 47105 on an unidentified working in the main platform.
26025 was new as D5325, was withdrawn in 1993 and is now preserved, 25027 was new as D5177 and was withdrawn in May 1983 and 47109 was new as D1697 and withdrawn early for a 47 in 1987.

Since the dawn of civilisation, humans look upon the heavens and are in awe of its ever-changing patterns. Although completely abstract in configuration, it never ceases to amaze. Exactly what it is that makes these puffy clouds so delightful to see?
So I started to use a telephoto lens to do panoramic shots of these sceneries. Yes, if you use a wide-angle lens you could very possibly capture the same moment and then crop out the sky — but you see, when you crop a digital image, you lose all the details and subtleties in the abstract painting, and all you are left with are pixels in white and blue. And in this panorama stitched using 18 RAW captures, you get instead an image which can be printed with all the resolution in its glory.
Across social media networks, be it Facebook, Google Plus, or the recent rather unfortunate redesign of Flickr, there is an increasing need for some imageries which extend a very wide field of view. Call it a banner or cover photo if you will, and based on analytics reports I was surprised to find my panoramas making their ways to blogs as banner images. Well here is another one for you… though I did not really see my photography as part of a background image, for the sake of Creative Commons, at least that would be a possible use…
I decided to use the 70-200 f/4L for this after noting that it was mostly sitting ducks ever since I bought the 100-400 — and without a doubt, the vaccuum-pump action on the 100-400 does not keep a very nice steady hand.

Not quite sure what was going on here at Hest Bank on the 19th of July 1967. As both locos are manned I suspect they were both heading to Morecambe/Heysham to work services, the 9F is 92227 of Speke Junction which had been in the area for a few days and the Class 25 is D5177, later to become 25027 and eventually withdrawn in May 1983.
25167 and 25027 head a trainload of stone from Cauldon Low Quarry down to Leekbrook Junction at Bradnop in the Staffordshire Moorlands. Stone was being quarried at the time for use in the construction of the Thames Barrier. Photograph taken 6th July 1978 and scanned from an original slide.

25032 departs from Crewe for the North Wales coast with 1D30, 07:30 Nottingham – Llandudno service, 16th July 1977. The frames for D5182 were laid down at Darlington works during December 1962 and entered traffic on the 19th March 1963. It was not fitted with a steam heating boiler and was allocated to Gateshead for freight duties. In 1970 the Western Region were reducing its fleet of diesel hydraulic locomotives and replacing them with diesel electrics from other regions and 5182 was one of a batch of four class 25’s (5179 – 5182) transferred to Newport for freight traffic workings. They stayed at Newport for four years until transferred to Cardiff during May 1974. 25032 spent June through to August 1974 at Derby Works for a classified repair including the fitting of dual braking equipment. In November 1975 25032 left the Western Region and headed north to Inverness for a six month spell before transferring to Eastfield during May 1976. During February and March 1979 25032 received its final classified repair (intermediate) at Derby works and by 1982 was allocated to Bescot. In March 1983 25032 moved to Longsight and with the withdrawal of 25027 in May 1983 became the oldest class 25 in service. During July 1983 25032 moved on 7to Crewe and was eventually withdrawn in March 1986. Although still allocated to Crewe 25032 was taken out of service at Holbeck and then moved south to Toton. It was broken up by Vic Berry, Leicester during December 1988
