Tomato 'Aker's West Virginia' 23W33 Tomato S1- (Aker, 1990) Red Tomato, Mature plant size: 90day, RED, USDA Hardiness Zone Veg, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed S1 for 146 DAYS (Victory). Planted in 2023.
Victory Seeds: 90 days, indeterminate — The regular leaf vines of 'Aker's West Virginia' remain fairly compact, only reaching four to five feet in height, and with flower clusters a bit closer together that typical indeterminate varieties. They produce ample amounts of red colored, round to oblate shaped, six to twenty ounce fruit that are meaty and quite delicious with an "old fashioned" well balanced flavor. On our farm in Oregon, the plants continued producing beautiful, huge fruit, even after the fall rainy season began. The tomatoes are unusual in that they do not develop green shoulders as immature fruit like other reds.
We received or sample of 'Aker's West Virginia' from Craig LeHoullier. In 1996, Craig was given this variety from Pennsylvania tomato enthusiast, the late Carl Aker. Craig explained that he had met Carl at a Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Harvest Festival in 1990, and that throughout the 1990s, he and Carl had corresponded and shared many tomato varieties. One packet of seeds that Craig received from Carl was simply labeled, "West Virginia," so Craig added the "Aker's" designation to distinguish it from other tomatoes with that name.

Allium 'Millenium' 23W33 ornamental onion G4- (McDonough) ornamental onion, Mature plant size: 20in., Purple, USDA Hardiness Zone 5-7, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW31, In Garden Bed G4 for 7.2 YEARS (MBulb). Planted in 2016.
Missouri Botanical Garden: 'Millenium', commonly called allium, is a bulbous ornamental hybrid developed by allium breeder Mark McDonough. Its hybrid parentage is unknown, but likely includes some A. nutens. Each bulb typically produces an upright foliage clump of slender, somewhat flattened, broad linear, grass-like, glossy deep green leaves to 6-12” tall in spring. Unbranched naked scapes rise above the foliage clump to as much as 18-20” tall by mid-summer, each scape being topped by a showy 2-inch spherical umbel of rose purple florets. Flowers typically bloom mid to late summer (July-August). Although all parts of this plant have an oniony smell and taste when cut or bruised, this hybrid is considered to be an ornamental and is not used for culinary purposes.
Cultivar name suffers from a minor spelling problem. It is often spelled 'Millennium', but Mark McDonough apparently registered it under the name of 'Millenium'. 2018 Perennial Plant Association's Plant of the Year.
2020 note: Planted 4 years ago, it is a mature plant. Measures 18 inches tall and 24 inches wide. Blooms later than my other garlic. The scapes are slightly taller than the grass like foliage and forms an attractive mounded plant. Unlike some ornnamental garlic that has long scapes coming from a short base.

Richard Hawke: Summer Peek-a-Boo® (Allium ‘MGsmmpkb13’) is a sport of ‘Summer Beauty’ that has a tidy compact habit with flowers perched on the foliage rather than rising above like its predecessor. The light purple flowers, in 2-inch spheres, smother the dark green strappy leaves for about a month in midsummer; minor leaf desiccation was noted periodically, but flowers masked the damaged tips. In our garden, the neat clumps were 18 inches tall and twice as wide. (I said it is compact, not dwarf!) To me, the two cultivars complement each other more than compete, although side by side, ‘Summer Beauty’ looks wilder

Missouri Botanical Garden: Allium lusitanicum, Easily grown in average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Performs well in sandy soils. Add sand to clay soils as needed to improve drainage. Best in full sun, but appreciates some light afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Tolerates a wide range of soils. Although this allium is a true bulb (albeit weakly developed) on a rhizome, it forms a clump which can be lifted and divided somewhat easily in either spring or fall. It will spread in the landscape by short fleshy rhizomes or by self-seeding. Deadheading spent umbels before seed set not only helps control unwanted spread but also helps build a stronger bloom for the following year.

Missouri Botanical Garden:Allium senescens, commonly known as German garlic or mountain garlic, is an ornamental onion that typically produces 4-9 grass-like, somewhat flattened, broad linear green leaves (1/4” to 1/2” wide) which rise in a dense clump to 6-12” tall. Leaves are semi-evergreen in warm winter climates, but will typically disappear in cool to cold winter climates as soon as fall temperatures dip below 25°F. Hollow, leafless, unbranched, 2-angled or 2-winged flowering scapes rise above the foliage clump in mid-summer to as much as 24” tall, each scape bearing a single terminal globose umbel (to 1” across) of 20-30 tiny pale pink to purple florets. Flowers typically bloom from mid to late summer, sometimes into early fall. German garlic is native to forests, dry stony slopes, steppes, saline meadows and gravelly places from western Europe across northern Asia to Siberia, Mongolia, Manchuria, China and Korea. Although all parts of this plant have an oniony smell and taste when cut or bruised, this species is considered to be an ornamental and is not usually used for culinary purposes.

Victory Seeds: 65 days, dwarf — The vigorous, dwarf, rugose, regular leaf plants are relatively compact, quite early to produce and prolific. Producing a good yield of medium to large sized (six to twelve ounces) oblate uniquely colored tomatoes that are essentially the first "black/orange" variety we've seen - orange flesh with green overtones, and somewhat amber/orange/green in appearance. The flavor can be a bit variable season to season, but at its best, it has an absolutely delicious, smokey flavor.

Developed by Roy Diblik of Northwind Perennial Farm.

Wikipedia: Momordica charantia (commonly called bitter melon; Goya; bitter apple; bitter gourd; bitter squash; balsam-pear; with many more names listed below)[1] is a tropical and subtropical vine of the family Cucurbitaceae, widely grown in Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean for its edible fruit. Its many varieties differ substantially in the shape and bitterness of the fruit.
NC State University: Momordica charantia is a vigorous, tendril-bearing, frost tender, annual vine of the cucumber family that will grow rapidly to 12-20’ long in a single growing season. Plants are generally grown like cucumbers. Best on a trellis.
Bitter melon has twice the beta carotene of broccoli, twice the potassium of bananas, and twice the calcium of spinach. It also contains high amounts of fiber, phosphorous, and Vitamins C, B1, B2, and B3. They produce after cucumbers are dried up and done for the season.

Richard Hawke: Protruding white anthers add sparkle to the dark rose-purple umbels of ‘Windy City’, a standout feature of this 2015 introduction. The 2-inch starburst-like, mostly sterile flower heads open in early summer and put on a spectacular show for about six weeks. The glossy dark green foliage is particularly lush in the early season; leaf tips may yellow or brown in summer, although it was not too troubling. ‘Windy City’ has a uniform robust habit to 21 inches tall in bloom—while the leaves form a clump that is 10 inches tall and 30 inches wide.

Momordica charantia 23W33 Bitter Melon N4- (Asian) Bitter Melon, Mature plant size: 55Days, YELLOW, USDA Hardiness Zone 4, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW33, In Garden Bed N4 for 233 DAYS (C3). Planted in 2022.
