Emergency trip to drs with small girl results in a dash home, and an over merlot-ed grandad ('celebrating' at a wonderful funeral), keeping an eye on the small boy, who greeted me with 'look mummy, I made a face' - made me smile!
The now-ruined town of Ani, was once the capital of an Armenian kingdom that covered much of present day Armenia and Eastern Turkey. The buildings began in the 4th century AD and in its heyday Ani consisted of over 100,000 inhabitants and rivalled Istanbul, Cairo and Bagdad in terms of size, power and glory. Most of the buildings we see today are from the 10th century, and the city was badly destroyed by the Mongol hordes in 1239 and more damaged was done in a 13th century earthquake and a big storm in 1957. Various decorations were removed by the Russians when they were here between 1878 and 1917 (most of which are now in the Hermitage), and ‘strategic’ blasts just across the border in an Armenian quarry have caused further cracks in the masonry. Restoration was started around 20 years ago.

Picked up a 1958 Chevy Delray today. My good friends helped me get it home so we took some pics of their badass trucks.
This unprepossessing building is the back of the Arno's Manor Hotel. Let's just say that as far as I've been able to ascertain, over the past twenty years this building has been a convent, then I believe the nun's opened a reform school for girls, then at some point in the 80's it was a disreputable nightclub, and now it's an apparently very presentable hotel. But you can't help but hope if you're going to be staying there you don't get a room at the back of the building!
