Dedicated in 1893 after 40 years of construction, the Salt Lake Temple is one of the most sacred sites of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS).

Better known as the Mormons, the LDS is a Christian restorationist church that is now the 4th largest Christian denomination in the United States. Founded by Joseph Smith in 1830, the Mormons differ from conventional Christian denominations over major doctrinal differences, mainly related to "lost texts" of the bible that discuss the history of Christianity in the Americas and cosmology. The single most controversial aspect of the LDS however was its belief in polygamy (probably as well as their tendency to vote in a block). After a history of oppression and conflict, during which Joseph Smith was murdered in Illinois and causing a schism in the church, Brigham Young decided to leave the United States with the bulk of the religious members.

Starting in 1846, at least 70000 Mormons moved along the Oregon-California Trail, heading West. While some scouts such as Sam Brannan wanted the Mormons to move as far as Mexican California, Brigham Young ultimately decided to settle in the Great Basin, as a fertile land that most importantly no one else would want. On July 24, after traveling 2 months from their Winter Quarter, Brigham Young, sick with what was likely Mountain Fever, came upon the Salt Lake Valley. According to legend, observing the fertile, creek-filled valley he declared that "This is the right place, drive on." This was the establishment of what would become the Mormon State of Deseret, and the State of Utah.

On July 28, 1847, only 4 days after arriving in the Great Salt Lake Valley, Brigham Young marked the location of the Salt Lake Temple. The temple took 40 years to build. Sandstone foundations quarried in the early years were soon buried after the outbreak of the Utah War. After the easing of tensions, the blocks were unburied to find that many had cracked. Consequently much of the building is made of quartz monzonite from Little Cottonwood Canyon. The capstone was laid in 1892, and the temple dedicated on April 6, 1893, exactly 40 years after construction began.

The temple is a massive Gothic/Romanesque structure, at 23505 m^2 the largest temple in the LDS. It is oriented to face Jerusalem. The temple facade is topped by the Angel Moroni, an important figure in Mormonism, and said to have provided the golden plates from which Joseph Smith translated into the Book of Mormon that form the basis of the LDS. The church states that Moroni is the angel mentioned in the Book of Revelation. Other motifs include the All-Seeing-Eye of God (also a masonic symbol, see the US dollar), beehives over the doorway, symbolizing industry, the Big Dipper, clasped hands symbolizing brotherly love, Earths, the Sun, Moon and Stars, which are also Masonic symbols symbolizing the spread of Christianity and the e celestial, terrestrial, and telestial kingdoms of glory in the afterlife. There are six spires symbolizing the priesthood.

This scene occurred during the fourth battle of Kawanakajima in 1556, between two rival warlords, Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen. Here Uesugi (left) made a surprise horseback charge at Takeda (center), seated at his command post and holding only his war fan, normally used for signalling.

The attack was unsuccessful, however, as Takeda held off Uesugi using his fan until Hara Osumi-no-Kami (right), one of Takeda's spearmen, stabbed Uesugi's horse. Then the two generals were dragged apart. (See The Samurai, by Jonathan Clements.)

Mill Lane Local Nature Reserve, in Walsall, West Midlands.

The reserve takes its name from Rushall Corn Mill which was first mentioned in the Doomsday Book. It stated that the Mill was owned by a Normal lord, and that later, a Saxon Miller named Wagga lived there. Mill Lane itself was first mentioned in 1591, as it was the original cardway from Rushall Mill to the Butts. This connection to industry and agriculture continued, as the site was mined for minerals (coal, limestone, iron, sand and gravel were all quarried or mined in the area.)

From the 1800s onwards the site was bounded by railway tracks, the lines of which can still be seen today. The heavy industry is gone, and has been replaced with grassy hills, damp meadows and a series of pools. Mill Lane today is a real mosaic of habitats - there are even patches of heathland on the site.
