The historic railcar "Stuttgarter Rössle" was used for a special train on May 22nd 2008 running from Stuttgart to Berlin Zoo.

In the picture, the train has almost reached its destination as it is arriving at Berlin Hbf. One catenary mast was really in the way so I removed it in Photoshop...

R 889 Praha-Vrsovice - Luhacovice

Piedmont Airlines was a United States airline from 1948 to 1989, when it was acquired by and merged into USAir. Its headquarters were at One Piedmont Plaza in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a building that is now part of Wake Forest University. The company was founded by Thomas Henry Davis in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1940, when Davis purchased Camel City Flying Service and changed the name to Piedmont Aviation. In 1944, Davis filed an application to run a passenger flight service in the southeast. After several years of lobbying government agencies and fighting legal challenges from other airlines, Piedmont received authorization on January 1, 1948. On August 5, 1989, Piedmont Airlines was absorbed by USAir.

Former DB220 class are still used by FER in various locations. Unfortunately most of those noted had been attacked by graffiti. Looks good for a 60 year old diesel loco, even if re-engine.

Tanygrisiau Railway Station on the Ffestiniog Narrow Gauge Railway, Tanygrisiau near Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales.

The Ffestiniog Railway was built in 1836 to carry dressed slate from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog for export by sea. The station serves the slate mining village of Tanygrisiau and was opened in March 1866. It closed to passengers on 15 September 1939. The new station opened for passenger traffic on 24 June 1978 and was the passenger terminus until 25 May 1982. Tanygrisiau station is at a height of 669 ft (204 m) and a distance of 12 miles 10 chains (19.5 km) from Porthmadog.

The new station is on a different alignment and grade from the old, the two alignments joining just to the north of the Blaenau end of the station. The old line was on a continuous downward gradient from that point through the station, but the new line is on an uphill gradient (to pass the nearby power station) and is more sharply curved. One of the old buildings still remains, visibly lower than the new trackbed.

Tanygrisiau station has an operational passing loop but is normally operated as an unstaffed halt and trains only call on request. Intending passengers are advised to check with the Ffestiniog Railway Company before embarking on their journey. The station is close to the Cwmorthin water falls, and the train passes Tanygrisiau hydro-electric pumped-storage power station and Tanygrisiau reservoir.

My favorite art vehicle from last year and one of my all-time favorites: The Contraption.

I desperately looked everywhere for it this year because I forgot to write down the name of the camp it would be at. As last-minute pure luck would have it, I stumbled upon this marvel on a backstreet on Sunday afternoon!

This wonderful ... contraption is pictured here with it's creator: the supremely clever, charming, modest, resourceful, tenacious, inspirational, and visionary LeChatNoir. Like any mythical creature, he's camera shy so I feel lucky to even have this photo.

The Contraption is essentially a fanciful and ornate off-the-rails hybrid handcar carriage. But when you read LeChatNoir's descriptions of its creation on the Burning Man ePlaya forums, you will see that it's much, much more.

LeChatNoir is a blacksmith by trade so just about everything you see here, even the very heavy central flywheel, was created or at least put together by hand.

When I found this vehicle last year it was driven only by a handcar mechanism. To my delight, LeChatNoir informed me that next year he was going to "upgrade to a steam engine". Well, it turns out that hundreds of hours of diligent work was insufficient to get one running in time for this year's Burning Man so he installed an antique internal combustion engine instead. Now the vehicle's flywheel can either be spun by hand, handcar style, or with a Hercules Model XK, 1-3/4 HP engine from around 1928.

This completely unique vehicle, lovingly created in Kentucky and transported across the country strictly for this event, is a wonder to behold. More than anything else I saw this year, The Contraption exemplified Burning Man 2008's theme: The American Dream.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

The diaries are really good reading. They are filled with all kinds of amazing stories - an odyssey, really. For example, look on this page:

eplaya.burningman.com/viewtopic.php?t=22962&postdays=...

LeChatNoir reluctantly decides to save the steam engine for another year and drives to Cleveland to pick up an antique internal combustion engine. There are some lovely videos of the engine put-putting along. When he gets back, he decides to mount the engine and finds a beautiful nest of House Wren eggs in the carriage bonnet. Humanely weighing the need to work on The Contraption against the health of the eggs and the mother, he actually builds a replica of the bonnet and places the eggs in it. The bird mother approves. Amazing must-read stuff here, people!

Through the inaugural New Zealand Archaeology Week, the New Zealand Archaeological Association is bringing archaeology to the public to increase public awareness and highlight the importance of protecting our archaeological heritage and what it tells us about ourselves and our stories. Around the country, a variety of events are being hosted by consultant archaeologists, museums, heritage organisations and iwi. It includes public talks, historic walks, and displays right around the country. The week runs from April 1 to April 7 and to help with the theme of the week, Archives New Zealand will be sharing a few items relating to archaeology that we have in our holdings. Further details on Archaeology Week can be found here nzarchaeology.org/news-events/national-archaeology-week

Sinker Stone/Māhē, Great Barrier Island

In October 1991 a sinker stone was discovered on Great Barrier Island. Wild pig rooting at Awhiri Pa exposed the stone. The find was reported by the Department of Conservation Ranger on Great Barrier Island, D.E. Woodcock. These items were used as a weight to hold down fishing nets.

This was definitely the most unusual vehicle I saw this year. It's an off-the rails handcar. You've seen a handcar - they're those things that two people pump in a see-saw fashion on a railroad. Well, this guy made one with tractor wheels.

I got to talk to the guy who made it. I don't remember his name or what his camp's name was, but he had a "Southern" accent. I didn't get where he was from.

He made this thing himself. It has a huge flywheel in the middle. Naturally, it also has a flamethrower. Two people pump like crazy on this thing and eventually achieve a speed of about 2.5 miles per hour. He said that next year he was going to upgrade to a steam engine.

If anyone knows whose this is, please let me know!
