Our wonderful excursion by boat has come to an end and on the way back to the harbor we once again have a wonderful view of the now much calmer sea.
Despite our protective clothing, we were still quite soaked and glad to have solid ground under our feet again soon, but we were all happy to have experienced this little adventure. A whale watching trip is really highly recommended, it is simply extraordinary to be able to see these giants of the sea up close
Unser wunderschöner Ausflug mit dem Boot ist zu Ende und auf der Rückfahrt in den Hafen haben wir nochmals eine herrliche Aussicht auf das inzwischen wesentlich ruhigere Meer.
Trotz Schutzkleidung, doch recht durchnässt und auch froh, bald wieder festen Boden unter den Füßen zu haben sind wir alle happy dieses kleine Abenteuer erlebt zu haben. Eine Walbeobachtungsfahrt ist wirklich sehr zu empfehlen, einfach außergewöhnlich diese Riesen des Meeres aus der Nähe betrachten zu können.

The whooper swan is a large white swan, bigger than a Bewick's swan. It has a long thin neck, which it usually holds erect, and black legs. Its black bill has a large triangular patch of yellow on it.
It is mainly a winter visitor to the UK from Iceland, although a small number of pairs nest in the north. The estuaries and wetlands it visits on migration and for winter roosts need protection. Its winter population and small breeding numbers make it an Amber List species. It is a Schedule 1 listed bird. RSPB

Wenn man die 830-Seelen-Gemeinde Niederrussbach (GM Russbach) südöstlich auf der Wiener Strasse, der L 1140, in Richtung B 4 verlässt, steht in den Weinbergen des Ortes am Jeplerweg, der alten Strasse nach Stranzendorf, dieser fast 4m hohe gemauerte klassizistsische Bildstock. Er wird örtlich "Feldkreuz am Leben" genannt und ist bereits an diesem Ort im Franzeiischen Kataster von 1823 eingezeichnet. Er ruht im alten Ried "Leben" auf einem quadratischen Grundfundament auf dem ein würfelförmiger Sockel aufliegt. Auf diesem erhebt sich ein vierseitiger quadratischer glatter Schaft ohne jede Information. Am Schaft eine überkragende Kragenplatte die unterhalb dreistufig gekehlt aufgebaut ist. Auf der Kragenplatte ein nach zwei Seiten offener rundbogiger quaderförmiger Tabernakel mit drei rot gefärbelten Balustern als Stützen. Im Tabernakel ein einfaches polychromes Relief der Madonna mit dem Kind. Am Tabernakel eine deckungsgleiche Dachplatte, wie zuvor die Kragenplatte, mit einem stumpfen Pyramidendach oberhalb. Bekrönend darauf ein einfaches Eisenkreuz. Zu den Bittagen geht die Prozession von der örtlichen Pfarrkirche zu diesem Bildstock um hier ihre Gebete und Bitten zu vor zubringen. 1986 wurde der Bildstock nicht ideal restauriert, da die Verzierungen am Schaft abgenommen und anschliessend nicht mehr erneuert wurden. Auch die Bemalung war nicht optimal da die rote Zierfarbe zerrann und den gesamten Pfeiler herunterlief. 2014 wurde er neuerlich restauriert. Der Bildstock ist etwa 230 Jahre alt.

Composer Aimo Mustonen (1909-1994) and an unknown young girl (little girl) in the background, who, judging by the dress, belongs to the Lotta Svärd organization. Aimo Mustonen was an advertising manager who has become known as the composer of Sillanpää's marching song. "Sillanpää's marching song became a real strike tune, to the rhythm of which Finnish soldiers marched to defense positions. The leadership of the Defense Forces later estimated that the Marching Song was responsible for maintaining the fighting spirit of the Winter and Continuation War for at least one division. (Wikipedia)" The words of Sillanpää's march song were, of course, written by F.E. Sillanpää (1888-1964).

Exercise Cobra Warrior Monday 4th September 2023
On the first day of the second Cobra Warrior exercise in 2023, I made my first visit to RAF Waddington to try and capture some of the Royal Canadian Airforce (RCAF) CF-188 Hornets :)
About half an hour after my arrival, one of the two Boeing E-3A Sentries parked on the west side of the airfield began to taxi for take off. Here is a video still showing LX-N90454 beginning to roll down runway 20 c/s NATO21.

'The Boeing E-3 Sentry, commonly known as AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) , is an American airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft developed by Boeing, being derived from the Boeing 707 airliner. The aircraft provides all-weather surveillance, command, control, and communications. The E-3 is distinguished by the distinctive rotating radar dome (Rotodome) above the fuselage.
In the mid-1960s, the US Air Force (USAF) was seeking an aircraft to replace its piston-engined Lockheed EC-121 Warning Star, which had been in service for over a decade. Testing of the first production E-3 began in October 1975, and the first USAF E-3 was delivered in March 1977. During the next seven years, a total of 34 aircraft were manufactured for the USAF.
NATO also had 18 aircraft manufactured, registered in neutral country Luxembourg and based at Geilenkirchen, Germany. 14 remain in service as of 2023 - one having been written off and three returned to the USA. The E-3 was also sold to the United Kingdom (seven), France (four) and Saudi Arabia (five, plus eight E-3-derived tanker aircraft). This year's second exercise is taking place from the 4th to the 22nd of September, with operations split between RAF Waddington, RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall. Due to a point failure at Betul station, 12622 Tamilnadu Express was detained at outer for more than half an hour, now it slowly proceeds towards Nagpur with an Itarsi WAP-4 # 22849 in charge, a bus can also be seen going over the NH-69 flyover!

The Boeing E-3 Sentry, commonly known as AWACS, was derived from the Boeing 707. 68 aircraft were built between 1977 and 1992. The E-3A variant is the initial production version equipped TF33 engines and AN/APY-1 radar. 24 built for the USAF were later converted to E-3B standard. A total of 34 were ordered by the USAF but 25 were delivered, the last 9 being completed as E-3Cs. 18 built were built for NATO with TF33 engines and five for Saudi Arabia with CFM56 engines. One additional E-3A aircraft was retained by Boeing for testing.

El nuevo Parador de Alcalá de Henares, ciudad declarada por la UNESCO en 1998 Patrimonio de la Humanidad, se sitúa sobre los pervivencias del antiguo Colegio-Convento de Dominicos de Santo Tomás, fundado por el deán Don Carlos de Mendoza en el siglo XVII. Edificio de dilatada historia y diferentes usos, desde los iniciales colegio universitario y convento, a los de reformatorio, cárcel y cuartel, que se ha recuperado del estado de semi-abandono en el que se encontraba al incendiarse sus cubiertas en 1998.
En 2002 los arquitectos Aranguren y González Gallegos ganan el concurso convocado por Paradores de Turismo de España, con una propuesta bajo el lema "Jardín Tallado" que en su memoria explica el objeto del proyecto: "recuperar la dualidad de edificio claustral y espacio ajardinado"…"la edificación necesaria para completar el programa se extenderá en la superficie del solar, quedando bajo un extenso jardín perforado por múltiples y diversos patios que generarán una interesante variedad de espacios de habitación vinculados a ellos". El proyecto formó parte de la exposición "On-Site. New Architecture in Spain" del MOMA en Nueva York.
Plantean un edificio horizontal que rememora un mundo de claustros y patios que resume la ciudad de Alcalá, adaptando el modelo tipológico del convento: “el claustro ofrecería retiro; el jardín, goce”. Para relacionarse con el entorno, la nueva edificación no debía sobrepasar la altura de la antigua tapia del huerto. A los edificios preexistentes se les realizan injertos de arquitectura contemporánea, redescubriendo la ruina y curando sus heridas con metales y maderas. Las carpinterías que cierran las antiguas arcadas del claustro están retranqueadas tras los sillares de piedra. En las fachadas conviven piedra y escultura renacentistas con cristal, acero en un lenguaje tan moderno como arriesgado, y los elementos visibles se cubren de una malla-veladura que permite la observación del exterior, pero que diluye la visión en sentido contrario. Los arquitectos han conseguido la transformación del espacio gracias al soterramiento de las habitaciones en los antiguos huertos, con un entramado subterráneo inspirado en la jardinería japonesa con el bambú como protagonista. Su interior sorprende especialmente si uno espera encontrarse con el estilo de los paradores o de la vieja Hostería del Estudiante; aquí no hay doseles, ni armaduras, ni muebles castellanos, ni cretonas. En el nuevo restaurante se dan cita los platos característicos y las viejas recetas de tradición cervantina, pero con un leguaje tan moderno como su arquitectura. En resumen: “una apuesta por la recuperación del pasado con el mejor presente para asegurar el futuro”
El acceso se realiza por un cuerpo de nueva planta sobre la calle Colegios, que sirve de articulación de las naves preexistentes, y del que parte una galería de unión con el claustro conventual, galería acristalada recubierta de una piel de malla metálica. En torno al recuperado claustro del Colegio de Santo Tomás, construido de ladrillo visto sobre zócalo de sillería de piedra, se ubican las zonas de cafetería, restauración y salón-biblioteca en planta baja, y ocho habitaciones especiales en el alta, y el Spa, un lugar espectacular instalado en los altos de la antigua capilla del convento.
El resto de las habitaciones de nueva construcción, se sitúan fuera del perímetro del antiguo convento, sobre los antiguos huertos. Bajo una zona ajardinada que sirve de cubierta a la nueva edificación se agrupan 98 habitaciones en dos plantas, parte bajo la rasante original, abiertas a un damero de patios ornamentales, “el jardín tallado”. Finalmente, 21 habitaciones se ubican en la planta superior de la antigua nave de talleres, edificada en el siglo XIX en ladrillo visto, por encima del jardín tallado. Para el turismo congresual y otros eventos sociales se disponen 12 salones ubicados en los bajos de la nave de talleres y en los restos de una vieja fábrica aneja -realizada en mampostería pétrea con verdugadas y recercados de ladrillo-, con recepción independiente y acceso por la calle posterior. Asimismo dispone, en la zona ampliada, de una piscina de temporada. El proyecto tiene prevista una ampliación, sobre el solar posterior de la manzana, con destino a Escuela de Hostelería aneja al Parador, planteada con un esquema similar al del cuerpo del jardín tallado, con aulas en la planta baja y residencia de estudiantes en la superior.
Frente a la fachada principal se mantiene, a la espera de su restauración prevista en 2012, la vieja Hostería del Estudiante, situada junto al Patio Trilingüe en el antiguo Colegio Menor de San Jerónimo, fundado por el Cardenal Cisneros en 1510.
