In Spring 2009, Stagecoach in South Wales received 17 12.8m Alexander Dennis Enviro300-bodied MAN 18.240s primarily to upgrade Brynmawr depot's marathon Service X4 (Hereford-Abergavenny-Brynmawr-Ebbw Vale-Tredegar-Merthyr Tydfil-Pontypridd-Cardiff).
Their fortunes proved to be mixed - 22795 was burnt out in 2013 after transfer to Cwmbran depot, 22779/83/4/6-8/90/2-4 moved on to the North Scotland fleet in 2015, where 22788 and 22793 was burnt out, and 22782 and 22789 left for the East Midland fleet in early 2016.
The remaining four - 22780, 22781, 22785 and 22791 - stayed in South Wales and were fitted with more reliable Cummins units in 2015. Merthyr Tydfil depot and its Brecon outstation then became their homes and they were usually based at Brecon for what was then Services 39/39B (Hereford-Hay-on-Wye-Talgarth-Brecon). This was subsequently absorbed into the TrawsCymru network as Service T14 and extended south to Cardiff via Merthyr Tydfil and Pontypridd.
My photograph dates from December 2018 and shows 22781 leaving Hereford Railway Station when operating Service T14 on what would be over a three and a half hour run to Cardiff. The four survivors remained at Merthyr Tydfil depot (and Brecon outstation) until replaced by a batch of 12 MCV eVoRa-bodied Volvo B8RLEs in Summer 2019, and were then dispatched to the North Scotland fleet.
As at December 2025, only two of the 17 MANs remain in service - Cummins-engined 22781 in the East fleet based at Northampton depot and MAN-engined 22789 in the West Scotland fleet allocated to Carlisle depot.

"S/N" is the aircraft's serial number. "L/N" is a Boeing code denoting what order the airframe came off the production line. "F/N" refers to an individual airline's fleet numbering system. Not all airlines use a fleet number; not all manufacturers use a line number.

Sister 22785 is heading in the opposite direction.
She was one of 10 of the batch of 17 that passed to the North Scotland fleet in 2015, though lasted in service for only another four years.

11/07/2018. Cummins powered Enviro 300 CN09 AAV is photographed here turning onto Castle Street in Cardiff with a working of Traws Cymru service T4 to Merthyr Tydfil.
When new, she was fitted with an MAN engine.
I mentioned in my photograph titled "Only on a Tuesday - 4" that Stagecoach in South Wales had recently bad farewell to 22782 and 22789, the remaining pair of 12.8m Alexander Dennis Enviro300-bodied MANs that retained MAN engines.
Here is 22789 in early August 2015 operating for Cwmbran depot on Tuesdays only Service X20 (Newport-Cwmbran-Pontypool-Abergavenny), setting down the afternoon market goers in Abergavenny Bus Station before taking up the 1330 return journey.
Only four of the original batch of 17 MANs delivered in 2009 remain in the South Wales fleet. These are Cummins-re-engined 22780, 22781, 22785 and 22791, which are based at Merthyr Tydfil depot and its Brecon outstation, primarily for Services 39B/39 (Brecon-Talgarth-Hay-on-Wye-Hereford). 22779, 22783, 22784, 22786, 22787, 22788, 22790 and 22792 are now in the Highland fleet, 22782 and 22789 recently transferred to the East Midland fleet, 22793 and 22794 are in the Bluebird fleet and 22795 was sold to Abba Scrap of Dowlais after receiving extensive fire damage in August 2013.

The 16 surviving 12.8m Alexander Dennis Enviro300-bodied MANs from a batch of 17 delivered to the Stagecoach in South Wales fleet in 2009 were replaced on Services X3/X33 (Abergavenny-Pontypool-Cwmbran-Cardiff) and X4 (Hereford-Abergavenny-Brynmawr-Ebbw Vale-Tredegar-Merthy Tydfil-Pontypridd-Cardiff) last Winter initially by a similar number of Alexander Dennis Enviro300s, which have since moved to the East Midlands fleet.
10 of the MANs transferred to the Highlands fleet during the Spring, leaving just half a dozen in South Wales. Four of these are allocated to Merthyr Tydfil depot and the other two are at Cwmbran.
Those based at Merthyr have had their MAN engines replaced by Cummins units and have been repainted. Three of the four are usually found on rotation at Brecon outstation for Services 39/39B (Brecon-Talgarth-Hay-on-Wye-Hereford), on which they replaced Wright Renown-bodied Volvo B10BLEs.
Merthyr depot tends to use the fourth either on Service 78 (Merthyr Tydfil-Treharris) or on Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff Service T4 short workings. 22785 is illustrated operating the former in this mid September 2015 shot as she crosses the River Taff Central Link Bridge in Merthyr Tydfil.
