SÜDAFRIKA( South-Africa), viktorianisches Swellendam,
Swellendam is the third oldest town in South Africa (after Cape Town and Stellenbosch), a town with 17,537 inhabitants situated in the Western Cape province. The town has over 50 provincial heritage sites, most of them buildings of Cape Dutch architecture. Swellendam is situated on the N2, approximately 220 km (140 miles) from both Cape Town and George.

-----
Fir the third time that evening I had a meeting with DMU 628 518 - now en route as local train towards Friedrichshafen.
The train is entering into station Nonnenhorn where there would normally be a scheduled meeting with the RE in the opposite direction...

The Grade I Listed Bishop's Palace, Wells, Somerset.
Construction began around 1210 by Bishop Jocelin of Wells but principally dates from 1230. Bishop Jocelin continued the cathedral building campaign begun by Bishop Reginald Fitz Jocelin, and was responsible for building the Bishop's Palace, as well as the choristers' school, a grammar school, a hospital for travellers and a chapel within the liberty of the cathedral. The chapel and great hall were built between 1275 and 1292 for Bishop Robert Burnell. The windows had stone tracery. Stone bosses where the supporting ribs meet on the ceiling are covered with representations of oak leaves and the Green Man. The building is seen as a fine example of the Early English architectural style.
In the 14th century, Bishop Ralph of Shrewsbury continued the building. He had an uneasy relationship with the citizens of Wells, partly because of his imposition of taxes, and surrounded his palace with crenellated walls, a moat and a drawbridge. The 5 metres (16 ft) high three-storey gatehouse, which dates from 1341, has a bridge over the moat. The entrance was protected by a heavy gate, portcullis and drawbridge, operated by machinery above the entrance, and spouts through which defenders could pour scalding liquids onto any attacker. The drawbridge was still operational in 1831 when it was closed after word was received that the Palace of the Bishop of Bristol was subject to an arson attack during the Bristol riots. These took place after the House of Lords rejected the second Reform Bill. The proposal had aimed to get rid of some of the rotten boroughs and give Britain's fast growing industrial towns such as Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham, Bradford and Leeds greater representation in the House of Commons; however there was no rioting in Wells. The water which filled the moat flowed from the springs in the grounds which had previously chosen its own course as a small stream separating the cathedral and the palace and causing marshy ground around the site. The moat acted as a reservoir, controlled by sluice gates, which powered watermills in the town.
The north wing (now the Bishop's House) was added in the 15th century by Bishop Beckington, with further modifications in the 18th century, and in 1810 by Bishop Beadon. It was restored, divided, and the upper storey added by Benjamin Ferrey between 1846 and 1854. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1548, Bishop Barlow sold Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset the palace and grounds. These were recovered after the Duke's execution in 1552.
In the 1550s, Bishop Barlow sold the lead from the roofs of the great hall. This resulted in it falling into a ruined state. It can be seen in an engraving of 1733 but was largely demolished around 1830 by Bishop Law. He created a "more picturesque ruin" by removing the south and east walls and laying out and planting the area previously occupied by the great hall. The palace was used as a garrison for troops in both the English Civil War and Monmouth Rebellion after which it was used as a prison for rebels after the Battle of Sedgemoor.
Bishop Kidder was killed during the Great Storm of 1703, when two chimney stacks in the palace fell on him and his wife, while they were asleep in bed. A central porch was added around 1824 and, in the 1840s and 1850s, Benjamin Ferrey restored the palace and added an upper storey. He also restored the chapel using stained glass from ruined French churches.
The palace now belongs to the Church Commissioners and is managed and run by The Palace Trust. The main palace is open to the public, including the medieval vaulted undercroft, chapel and a long gallery, although the Bishops House is still used as a residence and offices. There is a cafe overlooking the Croquet Lawn. The palace is licensed for weddings and used for conferences and meetings. The croquet lawn in front of the palace is used on a regular basis. The palace was used as a location for some of the scenes in the 2007 British comedy Hot Fuzz, and more recently in the 2016 film The Huntsman.

The story of the accident is best told by the Air Crash Investigation & Archaeology website www.acia.co.uk and is reproduced below:-
“In the early morning of 16 December 1944 a force of B17’s from the 303rd Bomb Group took off from Molesworth in Cambridgeshire for a mission to bomb the Marshalling Yards at Ulm in Germany. The weather report for the day had not been good but the decision was given for the mission to go ahead as planned. The B17’s took off at 0815 hours and headed for the assembly point far out over the North Sea. All got away safely but at 1015 hours with the weather showing no signs of improvement a message was received to abort the mission and for all bombs to be dropped in the North Sea. The B17’s began to scatter and head for the diversionary airfield of RAF Kirmington in Lincolnshire due to Molesworth being fog bound.
The crew of 44-6504 were having difficulty in dropping their bombs into the sea because of thick cloud and shipping being spotted below on every occasion when they were able to see through it, because of this the decision was made to return to base with the bombs on board. It was at this point that the Gee and radio compass began to act in an erratic manner and the navigator was unable to get a fix on their location. The crew were now completely lost, however a third class radio fix was obtained at 1230 hours followed shortly by a second class fix which confirmed their position. At this point, Kyle, thinking they were back on course removed his seat belt and informed the rest of the crew that they were on their way home.
The fix however had put them some 20 miles north of Cheviot summit, their altitude being just under 2000 feet, severe icing having been experienced at heights greater than this. The crew, not knowing the area, were oblivious to the fact that the high ground of the England/Scotland border was just ahead. At 1315 hours while gaining height, the B17 struck the top of West Hill narrowly missing a rocky outcrop known as Braydon Crag, in blizzard conditions it bounced across the flat top until coming to rest in a peat bog.
At this point, Kyle, who was in a completely dazed state due to his injuries and thinking he was still airborne pulled his parachute pack from under his seat, the co-pilot, Hardy, stopped him as he attempted to bail out.
The nose of the aircraft had been completely crushed killing the occupants, Turner and Holcombe, Kyle, the pilot, was seriously injured when one of the propellers smashed through the cockpit breaking his jaw. Immediately the aircraft had stopped moving, Hardy pulled open the emergency escape hatch and exited, whereupon he met Schwieferstein outside, he then re-entered and dragged out Kyle, who was bleeding heavily. Thinking they were the only survivors of the crash the three descended downhill to the west, luckily arriving at the farm of Mount Hooly in the valley below. The three were crossing a stream in the valley bottom when they were spotted by a shepherd who was armed, he fired a number of warning shots thinking they were Germans. Once they had identified themselves they were taken into the farm, where Kyle, being the more seriously injured was laid down on some straw in a barn.
Meanwhile in a valley to the north two shepherds, John Dagg of Dunsdale and Frank Moscrop of Southernknowe heard the aircraft passing overhead. When the sound of the engines stopped they decided the aircraft must have crashed. Dagg accompanied by his Border Collie, Sheila, set off up the hillside following the western edge of Bizzle Ravine which guided him up to near the summit, he was followed later by Moscrop and a third shepherd, Arch Bertram. On reaching the top he released his Collie so she could help locate any survivors whilst he searched the area. Later, just after they had had all met up, Sheila came running back excited and barking, Dagg and Moscrop followed her as she led them to four airmen huddled together in a peat hag trying to keep warm, these were Berly, Delaney, Kaufmann and Smith. One of them, Delaney, had a head wound, which the shepherds wrapped with some parachute silk. Berly had lost his boots while trying to put out a fire in the bomb bay, so some more of the silk was used to wrap around his feet. Moscrop was informed that there was a crew of nine and despite being warned that there were bombs onboard and it would be dangerous to do so he went to the wreckage to search for other survivors, finding no-one he returned to rejoin the others.
Slipping and sliding the shepherds led the airmen down the hillside, to eventually arrive at Dunsdale Farm at about 1830 hours. Soon news reached them that three other crewmembers were at Mount Hooly, as this news was filtering through the bombs, which were onboard when the aircraft crashed, exploded. All survivors were taken to a military hospital at RAF Milfield, and later, Kyle, who was the more severely wounded, was transported by ambulance to Newcastle General Hospital where he spent 3 1/2 months.
John Dagg and Frank Moscrop were awarded the British Empire Medal for their part in the search for survivors, while the Collie, Sheila, received the Dicken Medal, the animal equivalent to the Victoria Cross. Sheila was the only civilian dog to be awarded such an award which is the highest given to animals. These awards were presented to the farmers and dog at a gathering of locals, RAF and USAAF representatives close to Dunsdale farm in 1945. A scroll was presented to the Shepherds of The Cheviot thanking them for their help in the rescue of airmen from these hills. This scroll was still visible at the Cuddystone Hall in the College Valley until recently, it has now been removed and will be displayed in Wooler Library along with photos of the presentation.
On the 20th September 2005, George Kyle passed away in his hometown of Fort Lauderdale at the age of 82 years. Before he died George had expressed the wish that his ashes be scattered at the crash site. On the 4th October 2006, George’s daughter, his long term friend and companion, Kitty, myself and the son of the B17 co-pilot, Jay Hardy, were taken by helicopter to Braydon Crag and his final wish was granted.”

Boisbriand City Hall by night
.

Otero, Blineau, the Succession of Gayarre, Gillet, and Soniat Dufossat. With all buildings thereon constructed. Note: Excellent plan of the whole square, showing ownership as of this date and clearly delineating the area and footage of this lot, drawn by Joseph Pilie, dated December 24, 1827, annexed to this act. “The lot and buildings presently sold belong to the vendors in the following manner: To Mme. Angelique Pauline Carrick, wife of Andrew Lockhart, a portion measuring 32' 3" front on Conde Street by 123' in depth, bounded on one side by the property of the Ursuline Nuns and on the other side by the property of the Widow Carrick, as making part of the payment of the lot that had been constituted by her mother Mme. Lockhart and Andrew Lockhart, before Marc Lafitte, Notary, December 22, 1823, in which marriage contract it had been stipulated by the contracting parties, Article 3, that it would be allowed the future wife, with the authority of her future husband, and the said future husband with the consent of the said future wife, to sell and alienate the properties given in the said contract to the future wife to the tile of the dotal settlement, even as all other that will belong to them in the future with all personal responsibility, who accepts the responsibility. To Mme. Widow Carrick the remainder of the lot and buildings presently described and sold belong, as being part of the goods belonging to the Succession of James Carrick, her late husband, which she inherited jointly with her daughter, Mme. Lockhart, and a small portion of 3' 3" front on Chartres Street by 64' of depth, A.M., by means of the acquisition she made from Mme. Rosalie Segund, widow of Pierre Sauve. Mr. James Carrick had become proprietor of the whole of said lot of ground and buildings, with the exception of the 3' previously mentioned, by means of an acquisition which he had made during his lifetime of M. Elias Beauregard.”

The Stainforth and Keadby Canal is a navigable canal in South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, England. It connects the River Don Navigation at Bramwith to the River Trent at Keadby, by way of Stainforth, Thorne and Ealand, near Crowle.
The River Don Navigation originally continued through Bramwith Lock to the now disused Stainforth Side Lock, where it joined the tidal section of the River Don. Because of the difficulties of navigating this tidal river, with its fast flows, the Stainforth and Keadby Canal was opened in 1802, providing an easier and safer route to the tidal River Trent at Keadby.
