Der Name Karoo kommt von kurú aus der Sprache der San, die einst hier lebten und jagten. In deren Sprache bedeutet dieses Wort „trockenes, dürres, steiniges Land“.
Große und Kleine Karoo
Die Große Karoo besitzt eine West-Ost-Ausdehnung von über 750 Kilometern und eine Nord-Süd-Ausdehnung von etwa 110 Kilometern. Sie wird im Westen vom Massiv der Zederberge und im Osten durch die Winterberge begrenzt. Im Norden bilden die Höhenzüge Roggeveldberge, Komsberg, Nuweveldberge und Sneeuberg und im Süden die der Witteberge, Groot Swartberge und die Groot Winterhoek die natürliche Begrenzung.
Südlich dieser Region, begrenzt durch die Swartberge im Norden, erstreckt sich in einem Ausräumungsbecken die Kleine Karoo. Diese wird wiederum an ihrer südlichen Flanke von den küstennahen Langebergen und Outeniqua-Bergen begrenzt.

This freighter (c/n 48803) was delivered to Boeing with the registration N9166N and came to LH Cargo with the new registration D-ALCK on 31.05.00.

After approximately 6 weeks hidden away in Carlisle bodyshops and paintshops, 22609 finally emerged last week showing off its new 1960's/1970's style Cumberland livery, to commemorate 100 years since the start of Cumberland Motor Services (then named Whitehaven Motor Services). It is quite a smart livery, but I prefer Dart 34702 that is wearing the same livery in Carlisle. I also think it looked better when it was first painted with red wheels, but they were painted black about 1 week before it came out of paintshops for the press launch last Thursday.
Pictured here opposite Workington Rail Station, about to turn left up to Workington Town Centre. Its the first time I've attempted a photo there.

To celebrate the centenary of Cumberland Motor Services, MAN/Alexander Dennis Enviro300 PX08 CTV (stagecoach Cumbria 22609) was painted in the style of that company. Here it is re-joining the A66 from the village of Threlkeld on the X4 Penrith - Workington service just before being caught by a chasing April shower in 2012.

Stagecoach Cumberland MAN 18.240-Alexander Dennis Enviro 300 low floor bus on the A595 at Thornhill with a 30 Maryport to Thornhill service. This is one of the three buses without route branding, 22609-611. This vehicle was new to Stagecoach Cumberland in April 2008.
