Ermita mozárabe de San Baudelio de Berlanga. Casillas de Berlanga (Caltojar), Soria. Castilla y León.
La gruta a la que puede accederse desde el interior y el manantial que brota junto a ella parecen ser el origen, a finales del siglo X, de un cenobio o monasterio fundadado bajo la advocación de San Baudelio, mártir galorronamo del siglo IV, relacionado con los lugares donde se encuentran manantiales de agua. Edificada a finales del siglo XI por artesanos mozárabes en tierras fronterizas entre los reinos cristianos y musulmanes, por su riqueza decorativa interior, realizada un siglo después de su edificación, se la ha denominado popularmente la "Capilla Sixtina del arte mozárabe”, pese a tratarse de pintura ejecutada ya en periodo románico. En 1136 queda documentada su dependencia de la diócesis de Sigüenza, cuando se hace referencia a un monasterio construido por mozárabes, junto a una gruta puesta bajo la advocación de San Baudelio en tiempos visigodos. El tratarse de un lugar despoblado se abandona el culto y el recinto se llega a utilizar de resguardo para el ganado. Tras descubrirse su singularidad arquitectónica y valor artístico se declara Monumento Nacional en 1917.
A pesar de su declaración como Monumento la ermita sigue siendo propiedad de algunos vecinos de Casillas de Berlanga, que en 1922 venden veintitrés fragmentos de sus frescos al anticuario León Levi, por cuenta del marchante de arte estadounidense Gabriel Dereppe, por un importe de 65.000 pesetas. Las pinturas fueron traspasadas a soportes de tela por especialistas italianos, para su transporte. La operación se paraliza por las autoridades de Bellas Artes, que reclaman su propiedad para el pueblo español, pero los recursos interpuestos por los compradores consiguieron que el Tribunal Supremo, en 1925, declare legal la venta de las pinturas, siendo imposible su retención. La sentencia implicó la autorización del Director General de Bellas Artes “por imperativo legal” de la exportación de las pinturas pese a que en eso periodo habían sido consolidadas y restauradas por el estado español. Las pinturas fueron vendidas a los Museos de Cincinnati, Metropolitano de Nueva York (The Cloisters Museum), de Arte de Indianapolis y de Bellas Artes de Boston.
En 1957 el gobierno español canjeó una pequeña parte de las pinturas por el ábside de la iglesia románica de San Martin de Fuentidueña (Segovia), que actualmente también se expone en el Museo Metropolitano de Nueva York y hoy se exhiben en el Museo del Prado de Madrid. Finalmente la iglesia fue adquirida en 1949 por la Fundación Lázaro Galdiano y donada al Estado, pasando a depender del Museo Numantino de Soria. En 1965 restauraron las pocas pinturas que no habían sido arrancadas y la base o impronta que quedaba en los paramentos de aquellas que se habían trasladado.
El edificio está formado por dos austeros volúmenes sensiblemente cúbicos, el más pequeño corresponde al ábside, cubierto a dos aguas, y el mayor a la nave de la iglesia, a cuatro aguas, asentados a media ladera en dos planos diferentes, directamente escavados sobre la roca caliza. Se realiza con gruesos muros de mampostería. El acceso se hace mediante una pequeña puerta rematada con arco de herradura centrada sobre una de las fachadas laterales, la sur, y por una pequeña puerta que da acceso directo al coro de la tribuna, en la fachada Este. La nave se cubre mediante una singular bóveda formada por ocho arcos de herradura apoyados sobre ménsulas en las paredes perimetrales, cuatro en los ángulos y cuatro en los muros, que parten de una única pilastra central, como ramas de una palmera -la palmera es el árbol místico por excelencia, árbol de la vida que une lo terrenal con lo espiritual, con clara influencia oriental-. Sobre la pilastra central se abre una pequeña e inaccesible cámara que hace las veces de linterna, y para algunos autores también de relicario. La cobertura es de teja pero, hasta 1894, fue de piedra. La cabecera, al Oeste, está formada por un pequeño ábside, de planta casi cuadrada, se une a la nave principal por medio de escalones bajo un arco de herradura, se cubre mediante bóveda de cañón y se ilumina a través de una pequeña ventana de herradura. En el lado opuesto, en la mitad este de la nave principal, se levanta una tribuna sobre una estructura, formada por arcos de herradura apoyados en sencillas columnas, con ábacos cúbicos en lugar de capiteles y toscas basas, a modo de una pequeña mezquita de cinco por dos naves -una más en la zona central tras la palmera-. A la parte superior se accede por una escalera, enfrentada a la puerta de acceso, formada por peldaños volados empotrados en la pared. La columnata guarda en uno de sus extremos el acceso a la cueva eremítica excavada en la roca. El coro superior, posible espacio para la comunidad monástica, tiene acceso desde el exterior mediante una pequeña puerta abierta en el muro posterior. En el exterior, tras el ábside se encuentra una necrópolis rupestre.
La decoración, que cubría la totalidad de las paredes de la ermita, puede datarse a finales del siglo XII y principios del XIII, y tiene un valor excepcional. De ella se conserva parte de su impronta y algunas zonas menores y estaba realizada al temple sobre un enlucido de yeso. Para ejecutar las pinturas, entre las más antiguas en la arquitectura medieval española, se utilizó una corta gama de colores. Intervienen al parecer tres diferentes artistas a los que se ha dado el nombre de Maestro de Maderuelo o Primer Maestro de Casillas, a quien se atribuye la decoración de arquerías y bóvedas, las escenas bíblicas y las pinturas del ábside; Maestro de San Baudelio, autor de las escenas cinegéticas de la zona baja, y un tercer maestro a quién se atribuyen las mas modesta pinturas del interior del coro. De las pinturas que salieron destacarían el dromedario, la curación del ciego y la resurrección de Lázaro, la tentación de Cristo, las tres Marías ante el sepulcro, la Santa Cena, las bodas de Caná, la entrada a Jerusalén y el Halconero, y entre las que se encuentran en El Prado, las escenas de caza del ciervo y de liebres, el guerrero, el elefante, el oso y el cazador.
Su visita, en 2009, forma parte de la exposición Paisaje Interior que cierra el ciclo de las Edades del Hombre que se celebra en la soriana Concatedral de San Pedro.
