Michael O’Connor (1801-1867) was born in Dublin and was a heraldic artist before studying glassmaking in London with Thomas Willement. He returned to Dublin until 1842, when he went to Bristol and then to 4 Berners Street, London. He worked for Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin and William Butterfield, who may have produced some designs for him. From the 1840s he was assisted by his son, Arthur, who after the father went blind, took over the firm with his brother, William Henry (c1838-c1877). Arthur apparently withdrew on grounds of ill health and in 1873 William George Taylor (1822-1897) joined William Henry as a partner and took over after he died. The firm was successively named O’Connor & Taylor, WG Taylor and finally Taylor & Clifton and lasted until after 1900.
