This Willet circled and scolded me as I slowly walked the shoreline of Lonetree Lake. I always watch where I step, but this time I was extra careful, as quite likely there was a nest nearby, probably hidden in the grass.

Willets look much prettier in flight, as their striking wing pattern is hidden when they are at rest.

Marbled Godwits were not the only shorebirds that objected to my intrusion along the lake shore - the Willets had something to say about it, too. I found a flat rock to sit on. This Willet flew over and scolded me for several minutes. It's hard to believe that all the shorebirds will be departing on their southbound migration, beginning in about six weeks or less. Their breeding cycle is intense but brief.

When I looked straight down at this budding thistle - exact species unknown - I immediately thought, "Mandala!" Although not perfectly geometric, the natural design is circular, like so much in nature.

Between thistles, spear grass, cactus, wood ticks, black widows, and prairie rattlesnakes, the prairie is always trying to take a bite out of you. You quickly learn to look before you sit, kneel, or place your hand on the ground while setting up a macro shot. There is beauty everywhere, but it's pointed and sharp.

Number 2 in the current series of square crops. Think of it as a celebration of square. My first camera - a Kodak Brownie Starflex from 1960 - shot square photos and had a waist level finder. Even though I was happy to make the transition to 35mm and rectangular format four years later, I have always retained a soft spot for the formal dimensions of the square crop. This image of a dandelion in seed was intended to be square from the moment I set up my tripod.

And it's a focus stack. I made 45 shots of the seed head, camera on tripod, slight change of focus for each shot, then combined them. It's a different look from what I've been able to obtain in the past with a single shot. Shooting with a fairly wide f-stop, I had excellent sharpness along the plane of focus, and the 45 separate planes of focus created good depth of field, but not enough to produce confusing background shapes that would disrupt the pattern. Disclaimer: I may sound like I know what I'm talking about, but the truth is I am experimenting with this technique and there's still a lot of guesswork going into it.

The black and white conversion was an afterthought.

Locomotive History

At the Railway Grouping in 1923 the Great Western Railway inherited a large number of 0-6-2T tank engines from the South Wales Railway Companies. A number of these were in need of replacement and the Great Western Railway decided to build its own version of 0-6-2T, the 5600 class. Designed by C B Collet the 5600 class used many standard Great Western standard parts such as a Standard number 2 boiler, 4 feet 7½ inch driving wheels and the 3 feet 8 inch trailing wheel The class was built in three batches, 5600 – 5699 built by Swindon works between 1924 and 1927, 6600 – 6649 built by Swindon works between 1927 and 1928 and 6650 - 6699 built by Armstrong Whitworth between August and October 1928. 5643 was built at Swindon works in 1925 and spent its entire Great Western and British Railways career in South Wales until withdrawn from Barry in July 1963. Following withdrawal it was sold to Woodhams Brothers at Barry, arriving at in Woodhams yard in November 1963. It would languish there until sold for preservation in 1971 and was the sixteenth locomotive to leave for preservation. It was to take another thirty five years to restore the engine and it steamed again for the first time since 1963 in September 2006.

This moorhen really stood out in the environment and the reflection was the icing on the cake. RSPB Titchwell on the north Norfolk coast is a wonderful place with massive bird activity.
