i had my hopes up today when my mom informed me that my carpet would be cleaned today. i went home early from work. i waited. i cleaned. i straightened. i worked a puzzle. he finally shows up with bad news. there are no water spickets to be found at my apartment complex. he'd have to come back another day. sigh. on another note, i attempted to watch the meteor shower tonight. but, alas, i could not see it. it was too bright where i was.

Another incredibly rainy day. Looking forward to summer returning tomorrow (hopefully, according to the forecast). I wasn't feeling brilliant today - upset stomach and low energy - so wasn't too sad not to go for a walk. Instead I took a photo of the self-seeded Japanese maple in our window box, which had been plastered to the window by all the rain.
Tim's Mum went for an MRI today, and my Mum was back at the dental hospital, with a swollen jaw again, despite having had a problem tooth out a few weeks ago. If it's not one mother it's another....

I spotted this one lonely dove on the power lines again. Usually doves hang around in pairs but I always seem to spot one dove in the same spot. Maybe he or she prefers the single life. 😋
I hope you all had a great day.

Re-reading Pema Chödrön's book When Things Fall Apart. It's been years (15 or more?) since I read that book. I liked it then. I love it now. For whatever reason, it really holds and resonates even though I don't personally feel like things are falling apart.
Chapter 4 is all about how to meditate. The real basics. What I've found is that the more I meditate the more I kind of forget how to meditate. Or why I am meditating. Not all the time, but it does seem to be a recurring theme. I think this is common and why it is so helpful to have a meditation instructor (MI, as we call them in my sangha.).
The jist is sit down, and open your heart. Relax. When a thought comes up, let is dissolve and go back to having an open heart. Relax. When a thought comes up, let is dissolve. Repeat etc. :)
Then the chapter goes on to say how this approach is actually very difficult for Western students. So there are simple tools and techniques.
I may have underlined the entire chapter.
It was the next chapter, Chapter 5, that really touched me. Touches me. It's called It's Never Too Late. And I am going to read it again and maybe again. It is so good that you could read just a paragraph a day just to let it all seep deep into your bones and permeate. I want everyone I know who goes through a hard time beating themselves up to read this chapter and to know it is never too late. Never too late to relax and love this life and love yourself and love the people around you. And in doing this you reinforce loving your life and yourself and the people around you. And that itself becomes a worthwhile practice.
Only Pema doesn't say it that way. She says it in a much better way full of pith and humor and kindness.
I treasure this book.
