When sunlight crosses the earth's atmosphere, during very cold days or in conditions of limited cloud cover with cirrus clouds at high altitudes, it is refracted by the hexagonal ice crystals in suspension that bend the light beam with a angle of 21.54° for red and 22.37° for blue: therefore a Circular Halo is formed at 22° from the Sun whose color degrades from red (inside the halo) to blue (outwards).

The two bright spots, diametrically opposite the Sun at a distance of 22°, are the "Pareli".

In this case the other Parelius, the western one, was half-hidden by low clouds.

A new flower for me - the African Lily or Agapanthus. The flower heads are big, full of flowers and rather drooping and shaggy - like a very bad hair day! So I took a few of the small flowers, and used the sunlight streaming through the window.

There'a a window, some bokeh and plenty of textures - so ....

(This is a continuation of a chronological sampling of my marathon "last" journey in my Sportsmobile, showing a few shots taken along the way.) After leaving the bird refuge in Utah my plan was to drive through Grand Teton and spend a couple of days in Yellowstone. I camped somewhere along the way arriving at the Tetons before the sun came up. I stopped at Oxbow Bend and caught this sunrise before attempting to enter the eastern entrance of Yellowstone. The entrance was open but the road was closed further ahead. I doubled back to Jackson and took Teton Pass, Highway 22 from Wilson. It was a beautiful drive and I caught a young male moose before getting to highway 22. It's such beautiful country out there just driving through it is worthwhile.

At Haarlemmerstraat 125 in Leiden you will find a shop front of a former goldsmith. The shop front was installed around 1925 by order of jeweler P.J. van Kampenhout, whose name is still on it, and was made in a style characteristic of the construction period, related to Art Deco. The shop front is classified as a national monument.

This is the last photo (#22) from the series colorful Leiden in a frame.

As a couple of guys step out of the Governor's Tavern they are startled by the growl of two big EMD SD40-2s on CSXT train L022 muscling a heavy cut of loaded grain hoppers up the brutal 3.22% from CSXT's yard down at river level beside Amtrak's Hudson Line main. They are making a 90 degree turn at the top of the hill at MP QCV 1 on the Claverack Industrial Track and crossing Union Street as they start a 350 ft run down two blocks of South 7th Street before cutting through the middle of the town square then passing the old Hudson Upper Depot.

Still sporting its nose light and original number is CSXT 8128 which was built in Aug. 1980 for Clinchfield with the same number but delivered in Family Lines grey paint. Coupled behind is CSXT 8854 blt. Aug. 1978 as Conrail 6496 which is very much on its historic home rails.

This Selkirk based job solely exists to serve the ADM flour mill located in the former Lone Star Cement facility which is now the only reason this unique line survives. This two and half mile long spur off the former New York Central main is actually former Boston and Albany trackage having been built in 1838 as the Hudson and Berkshire Railroad. It was sold at foreclosure to the Western Railroad of Massachusetts in 1854 and became part of the new Boston and Albany system in 1870. A year later the upper depot which survives as a cool brewery just a thousand feed behind was constructed by the B&A. At its peak in the 1880s four round trip passenger trains and a northbound mixed called there every day but by 1933 passenger service had ended. The 17 miles between Hudson and Chatham were sustained largely by cement traffic moving east to Boston, until 1959 when the line was severed east of Claverack and abandoned through Mellenville and Ghent (via the Upper Harlem Line) to Chatham where it met the B&A mainline. Another mile and half from the feed mill in the center of Claverack hung on nearly two more decades until it too succumbed shortly after the coming of Conrail leaving only what survives today reaching about 2.5 miles to the mill in Greenport Center.

I've always been partial to 'glass out' switchers so this really was the best choice once they didn't take the 22 from New Milford

Continuing with the chase of Housatonic Railroad train NX-12 making their Sunday turn from Canaan to New Milford and back. Having run down to the 'yard' behind Kimberly Clark and swapped out cars for the NX-10 local they are now headed back north. The short train is curling through the woods approaching the dirt Rooster Tail Hollow Road crossing at about MP 15.3 on the old New Haven Berkshire Line main.

This historic route following its namesake river the whole way is exceptionally scenic, but sadly none of the road's own sharply painted green and yellow HRRC units are presently in service and they rely almost entirely on leased GATX locomotives. In charge this day were GP38-2 GMTX 2328 (blt. Feb 1966 as Illinois Central GP40 number 3011) and MP15DC GMTX 229 (blt. Apr. 1982 as SOU 2408) which is now leading glass out for the trip back home.

After taking the 30 second capture at f11 with no ND filters, I wanted to test out the Canon 5DMIII stepped all the way down to f22. Two additional stops of light would have been 120 seconds long, but based on the histogram of the f11 shot at 30 seconds having about a half stop of exposure room, and that it was getting darker by the minute ... I let this one cook for 180 seconds.

Even with the strong breeze, stepped all the way down, the 17/40mm on the full frame resulted in a very sharp image and fine DOF. Just a slight reduction in sharpness from f/22 from f/11 that can only be seen if zoomed in at 100% and you go from to the other over again. Being able to take advantage of the f22 will very useful with the landscapes.

This evening the colors in the sky from the post sunset was very pretty - better than the sunset itself I think.
