I had never seen these small "rainbows" around the sun on each side. Not sure if they can be called rainbows. They disappeared when the sun got closer to horizon.

Thanks for Micheal R. Swigart for informing it is 'Sundogs' - parhelion.

Here is a quote from pink*fish's research.

"Sundogs typically appear as a bright and colorful patch in the sky at a position 22 degrees or more to the left and/or right of the sun. They are a halo. Other common associated phenomena, collectively called "ice halos," are the circumzenithal arc, upper tangent arc, parhelic circle, and lower tangent arc. There are many other named ice halo phenomena that can be seen given optimal conditions.

The ice crystals responsible are hexagonal plate shapes 0.05 - >1mm in size. These ice crystals refract the sunlight in many directions but with a minimum deviation angle of about 158°, resulting in the appearance of sundogs about 22° from the sun. The refraction depends on wavelength so sundogs have a red inner edge and more muted colours further from the sun as colours increasingly overlap. Solar altitude is important and sundogs draw away from the sun at increasing solar altitudes.

Sundogs are seen in short arcs always at the same altitude as the sun because the plate crystals are preferentially aligned by aerodynamic drag effects with their large basal faces approximately horizontal.

Although often less vivid and more diffuse than the ones depicted in the photographs, sundogs are actually rather common; they are often overlooked because one must look in the general direction of the bright sun in order to spot them.

In remote stretches of Western Texas, sundog refers colloquially to a segment of a common rainbow."

Now in her 13th year of service she's still a brilliant runner, although now in need of a repaint and retrim.

The Service X40 was axed in early 2018, however has since been part reinstated through the new variation of the 1/2 numbered 1B.

The Antonov An-22 Antei (Ukrainian and Russian: Антей Antaeus) (NATO reporting name "Cock") was the world's heaviest aircraft, until the advent of the American C-5 Galaxy and later the Soviet An-124. Powered by four pairs of contra-rotating turboprops, the design remains the world's largest turboprop-powered aircraft. It first appeared outside the Soviet Union at the 1965 Paris Air Show.

In the late 1950s the Soviet Union had a requirement for a large military transport aircraft to supplement the Antonov An-8 and An-12s then entering service.Originally known as the An-20 it was a conventional multi-engined high-wing design. In the early 1960s the company produced a wooden mock up at the company workshops at Kiev of what was designated the Model 100.[1] The prototype now designated the An-22 was rolled out 18 August 1964 and first flew on 27 February 1965.[1] The prototype was given the name Antheus and after four-months of test flying was displayed at the 1965 Paris Air Show.Production aircraft were built at the State Aircraft Factory in Tashkent and the first delivery was made to the Air Transport Wing at Ivanova Airbase in 1969.

The aircraft was designed as a strategic airlifter, designed specifically to expand the capability of the airborne troops to land with their then-new BMD-1 armoured vehicles. The An-22 cargo hold can accommodate four of these as opposed to one in the An-12.

It also has the capability to takeoff from austere, unpaved and short airstrips, allowing airborne troops to perform air-landing operations. This is achieved by four pairs of contra-rotating propellers, similar to those on the Tupolev Tu-114. The engines generate significant thrust, and produce a slipstream over the wings and large double-slotted flaps. The landing gear is ruggedized for rough airstrips, and, in early versions, tire pressures could be adjusted in flight for optimum landing performance, although that feature was removed in later models.

The An-22 follows traditional cargo transport design with a high-mounted wing allowing a cavernous cargo space of 33m in length and a usable volume of 639m³. The forward fuselage is fully pressurized and provides space for 5 to 8 crew and up to 28 passengers, but the cargo space is pressurized to only 3.55 PSI / 0.245 bar allowing for a lighter airframe. A door equipped pressure bulkhead is located at frame 14, separating the cargo attendant's compartment from the main cargo compartment. This allows the rear cargo doors to be opened during flight for paratroops and equipment drop. Like the An-12, the aircraft has a circular fuselage section. The An-22 has set a number of payload and payload-to-height world records

The An-22 has the general appearance of an enlarged version of the earlier Antonov An-12 except that it is fitted with a twin tail. This gives the An-22 better engine-out performance, and reduces height restrictions for hangars. Also of note are large anti-flutter masses on the top of each tail.

Only one production variant was built, the standard An-22. Prototypes, such as the one first featured at the 1965 Paris Air Show had fully-glazed noses that lacked the nose mounted radar of production models. Those aircraft had the radar mounted below the right wheel well fairing, forward of the wheels. Antonov designated a variant with a modified electrical system and an additional augmented flight control system the An-22A but the designation was not used by the military.

The An-22 was originally built for the Soviet Air Force and Aeroflot, the state airline. The conversion from An-12 in the Air Force began in July 1974. The 12th Mginsk Red Banner air transport aviation division (airbase Migalovo) was one of the units which had its three regiments entirely equipped with the An-22s. Another unit that operated it was the 566th 'Solnechnogorsk' Military Transport Aviation Regiment, which used the An-22 from 1970 to 1987.

The An-22s from Migalovo were used for the initial insertion of the VDV troops in to Kabul, Kandahar and Bagram during the 1979 Soviet war in Afghanistan. One An-22 was shot down near Kabul in 1984, killing 240 people.[2] In 1980 one An-22 crashed at Vnukovo International Airport while two more crashed at Migalovo in 1992 and 1994.

In 1984 the military aircraft were used to deliver Mi-8 helicopters to Ethiopia during drought relief operations.

In 1986 the aircraft of the 8th air transport aviation regiment from Migalovo were used to deliver materials for the containment of the Chernobyl disaster effects.

During 1987 the aircraft were used to deliver military equipment to Angola. A year later the military An-22s were used to deliver 15,000 tons and 1,000 personnel in aid of the relief of earthquake disaster in Armenia.

The An-22 aircraft were often seen at the Le Bourget Air Show, and in 1988 delivered an engine from An-124 to the Farnborough Airshow.

An-22s were used to deliver internal security troops to many ethnic regional conflicts during and after the break up of the Soviet Union, and during the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Germany, notably airlifting the 104th Guards Airborne Division. In 1995 they delivered the Russian peacekeeping contingent from the 98th airborne division to Bosnia - Herzegovina during the Bosnian War.

Approximately 45 remained in service by the mid-1990s, mostly with the Russian Air Force, but these are slowly being replaced by the bigger turbofan-powered Antonov An-124. The remaining An-22s appear to be operated by an independent military transport aviation squadron at Tver (Migalovo). Currently one An-22 is in use for civilian cargo duties with Antonov Airlines.

A proposed civil airliner version capable of seating 724 passengers on upper and lower decks was planned but wasn't constructed. (For comparison, a typical Boeing 747 can carry 400-500 passengers.)

The first book in the series Accidentally Wes Anderson came out in 2020. It became a New York Times bestseller from Wally and Amanda Koval. Now four years on, the second in the series AWA Adventures is being released on October 22 from good book stores everywhere.

As in every Wes Anderson movie there are storylines aplenty in this book (that runs to 368 hardbound pages). Stories that cover every continent of the globe. 200 locations are featured, including my photograph from a cabin on the Spirit of Tasmania. Wes Anderson himself writes the foreword.

Most important of all (and the reason I bought the first book in this series), is the inspiration these 200 photographs provide for your own photography. This is a photobook like no other!

For Australian viewers

Throughout October and November the Accidentally Wes Anderson exhibition is being staged at 360 Bourke Street, Melbourne. The exhibition will highlight all the photographs in the book in a whimsical setting (as per the Wes Anderson experience). Bookings by following the link: awaexhibition.com/melbourne/

A change to the way some vehicles and services are diagrammed has seen the emergence of a rather more varied early 22 from Tuxford to Newark.

Previously the home of wall to wall Optare Solos (on a Tuesday to Friday - Monday was still an anything day!), the service now sees a mix of Enviro200's, Versas, Solos, and even an Olympian on a Monday.

It's all down to what service the vehicle is doing afterwards - on this day, DS95 worked on to the 0755 37 from Newark to Retford, after the 0635 22 from Tuxford to Newark - on which it is seen at The Sun Inn before departure.

Excuse my position please - it was the first time I'd driven it in a while and I didn't want to get it overly close to the kerb... unfortunately, this meant I managed to keep it overly far away from it instead!

On the last day before the route is curtailed for the time being, 680 was captured turning out of Leith Street and making the right turn on to Princes Street as it works a 22 from Ocean Terminal to Gyle Centre. As from 5 June 2022, the route is being temporarily cut back from Leith to Waterloo Place in the city centre (the street on the right), a move unlikely to be popular with Leithers. The restored McKeen Motor Car at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carsen City on June 26, 2011 -- Virginia and Truckee Railroad #22.

From the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum web site.

When the Virginia and Truckee Railroad completed its branch line between Carson City and Minden in 1906, passenger service was provided by a mixed passenger and freight train. It was soon apparent that additional passenger service was desirable, but adding a passenger-only steam train was too expensive. The Virginia and Truckee looked at motorcars as a more cost-effective solution, and in 1910, purchased a 70 foot gas powered McKeen motor car to provide twice-a-day passenger service between Minden and Carson City.

The McKeen Motor Car Company of Omaha, Nebraska, was organized under the sponsorship of E. H. Harriman of the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads. It was one of the most successful of the early motor car manufacturers. The cars featured ultramodern steel stressed skin construction, "dustproof" porthole windows, and the distinctive knife-shaped wind-splitter front.

By 1932, passenger traffic on the V&T was declining all over the railroad. The McKeen car was rebuilt in the shops with expanded mail and express space, and placed in service all the way from Reno to Minden, making a round trip once per day. The car final made its last run in September 1945, one of the last unmodified McKeen cars running in the nation. In 1946 the body was sold to become a diner, and later Al's Plumbing Supply office in Carson City. It was donated to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in early 1996. The official unveiling of the restored car was May 9, 2010, one hundred years exactly from the date it was delivered to the Virginia & Truckee Railroad.
