I had an exam that day, I spelt literature wrong on the front of my literature exam. o.O

the rest went okay though, thank goodness.

For rebecca's great FGR pick for today - Story Telling Photos.

There could be many stories for this pic, but here's the true one. My tribute to an amazing family and their sweet little boy.

I've donated blood on and off for the past 7-8 years. A fairly easy effort for me - I don't mind needles, it doesn't take long, and free cookies! But over the last year, it has taken on much great importance. My good friends Kinn and Jose have a son with a rare medical condition. When he was born, he needed five blood transfusions. I'm not much of a writer, so here's an excerpt from Kinn's blog and a presentation she did for the United Way. I'm truly inspired by them every day and grateful for the reminder that the little things we can all give make a huge different to others.

Bo was born with a rare condition that precludes

him from absorbing the necessary fluids and nutrients to survive on

his own. According to the literature, he was not supposed to survive

his 9 month birthday. He turned 15 months old this week. To my

knowledge, there are less than 6 living kids in the US with this

condition. In a typical intestine, it is lined with something like a

shag carpet. All those fibers provide lots of surface area to absorb.

Someone with Bo's condition has a gut lined with something more like

linoleum; those fibers are in the wrong place. So he receives

artificial nutrition intravenously. This can be tricky, as the body

has a harder time regulating itself.

On the one hand, we realize that each day we have with Bo is a gift.

On the other hand, living on the edge of life and death can be

terrifying. But none of this would be possible without something as

simple as the person who gives blood at their local Red Cross Drive.

Because even though Bo's condition is rare and requires all sorts of

specialists, if it were not for the 5 blood transfusions he received

in the first few months of his life, we wouldn't even have the

privilege of sleeping on hospital cots, thumbing our noses at the

specialist group in Ann Arbor, and finding ways to keep Bo healthy and

thriving.

A grungy looking NS 9599 leads 65E through the remote PRR era position light posts at PT (SIP) 215.8, one of four posts left between Huntington and Altoona. On Sunday, April 14th, signal crews began the cut over process, eliminating this intermediate, and all other PL's between HUNT and GRAY. Another chapter in the Pennsylvania Railroad's legacy has come to an unfortunate end.

There are actually three female cycad plants producing new leaves right now. I'm fascinated with their process! I think they are gorgeous! I never knew before the way cycad leaves unfurled with all these tiny spirals!

This is the oldest plant and the sixth and last image of the series.

Cycas revoluta. The most common cycad, and the one most people have heard of, is the Sago Palm. Cycas revoluta is NOT a palm despite what its common name suggests, but is a classic cycad. Cycads are non-flowering plants that are actually more closely related to conifers than to palms or any other flowering plants. They reproduce by making cones and seeds. All cycads are dioecious, which means they are either male or female, and never both.

Cycads evolved 280 to 250 million years ago. Imagine ~ 220 million years ago many species of cycads covered Pangea, when all the continents had coalesced into one, and dinosaurs roamed, ran, and fought among them. The dinosaurs disappeared 65 million years ago in a great extinction. Cycads survived!

This Wikipedia article is very interesting!

Today. Snapped this shot during yesterday's run. One of the first things I learned during this weekend's workshop was the importance of filling the foreground. Before this weekend, I probably wouldn't have taken this shot, instead, you would probably see just the skyline and water with a slab of concrete. Having learned the importance of the foreground, I set up my camera next to this rope, and I think it paid off. This is the skyline from Navy Pier as the sun is about to set.
