Simonds no 10 hand saw_214831 by Kim Malmberg

I recently bought a batch of ten hand saws off eBay. Even though the batch itself proved to be a bit of a disappointment, it did contain a few nice finds.

This is maybe the most unusual and best of all the saws in the lot.

It is a Simonds no 10 straight back hand saw with a 26 inch saw plate. The handle is beech as was the case with many of Simonds saws.

The saw plate doesn't look quite right, but this one was a real bugger to clean up. The plate doesn't have any pitting, but the plate was coated in thick layer of black and extremely tough rust.

The plate has been soaked in citric acid on three occasions, it has been sanded with even as coarse as 180 grit wet and dry sandpaper and still I'd like to do more. Still I am pleased that the rust hadn't caused more damage.

The steel in the plate is excellent and very hard to file, so maybe the quality was the reason this plate survived. And maybe the slightly thicker steel Simonds used has also helped.
