.
Is this an escaped black domestic rabbit or a wild rabbit that's black due to melanism? This isn't all that uncommon, and I took the picture in a nature reserve, far from the nearest house. I actually wanted to experiment a bit with my new Tamron 150-500mm lens, bird photography with a strong telephoto reach—that's pretty new territory for me. I didn't see many birds, and the few pictures I did take are mostly unusable; I guess I need much more practice 😉 . So this friendly rabbit in the wild came in quite handy.

GTW fantrip behind CNR 4-8-4 (6218) at GTW/NYC station. The gloomy skies may have challenged the Ektachrome capabilities but not my spirit. That big building behind the engine is, I believe, the plant where the Studebaker cars were made - for those who remember WHAT those are! I believe the last car was made here in about '63 but the Canadian plant (in Hamilton?) turned them out until about '68.
GTW fantrip photo runby with CNR 4-8-4 (6218.) The event was from Chicago to South Bend and return, coinciding with what must have been a classic "lake effect" snowstorm, as often happens in this area south of Lake Michigan. I recall having a good time in the snow, as were other participants. The 6218 was a fine performer and this 16-year-old from the northern suburbs was an instant convert to Canadian railroading via the Grand Trunk Western.

So you know how things come in threes? Now I have a cold. A rather nasty one. I had planned an elaborate image for today, but this is all I can manage.

...and Thedford, MP242.6 (from Lincoln, Nebr.), was as far as we made it. In our twelve hours we could only make it 105 miles from Ravenna, probably dodging coal trains all the way, and our train sits 123 miles from our destination of Alliance. The power, an SD45 and SDP45 (6468-6595) was probably more than adequate for our gentle uphill trip along the river, but later on that would steepen and make the going slower for a westbound. Also, the CTC that had been installed by the CB&Q was more than enough for the traffic that had been on this route (probably even overkill), but with all sidings except for Ravenna and Seneca having a spring switch at one end and a power switch at the other, meets could get a bit more time consuming if the dispatcher wanted to head a train into a siding at the spring switch...usually to get it out of the way if, as one of our clerks in Alliance was known to say, "the Grim Reaper was about to catch up with the crew." The Grim Reaper was very busy.
The small harbour in Southampton, Ontario, on Lake Huron , at the mouth of the Saugeen River...still showing activity late in the season.
A big project to install a new water intake in the lake, is almost finished...with work still being done to repair damaged fish habitat, at the end of the pipes.
Two tugs, one the Bagotville, and the other, the Carl M from Toronto are used to tow the large barges out into the lake. Depending on the wind and waves, work carries on twenty-four hours a day....it is a cold job at the moment.
The edges of the lake are frozen in spots....and soon the project will have to finish. A bonus will apparently be paid if everything is complete this fall.

A rare Riem perspective - this shot must have been taken from one of the tower‘s lower floors. I like the mixture of old and new München stairs and the traffic on the apron (note the police VW Beetle). A Dan-Air B727 is partly visible at the top of the frame.

As a head end brakeman, I'm checking the train on one of the many curves as BN westbound freight 177 sweeps through the valley of the Middle Fork of the Loup River between Halsey and Thedford. We are surrounded by the grass covered dunes of the "Sandhills" that take up a large part of central Nebraska. When we - or the relief crew, actually - get past the former division point of Seneca, they'll climb out of that valley and enter the thick of the Sandhills, almost all the way to Alliance for roughly one hundred miles of more sweeping curves and country that, a hundred years ago, scared many cattlemen from entering in search of lost herds because they figured (rightly) they'd get lost. When one daring ranch-hand went in anyway he found a lot of contented and fat cattle; thereafter the Sandhills became famous for its ideal pasture country - and no good for farming! Once the tracks leave the valley, following the river almost all the way to where it springs from underground aquifers, the farms disappear completely, except for hay production. As for 177, it was run from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Laurel, Montana, by way of Alliance, Scottsbluff, Casper and the Wind River Canyon. Not much local switching here, so all I had to do was watch and wait for where we pulled into a siding to die on the Hours of Service....
