Edited NASA image of AS-203 on 5 July 1966 which was a developmental launch for the Saturn IVB rocket.

NASA caption: The Apollo/Saturn AS-203 mission was an unmanned test of the S-IVB (second stage) and the Iu (instrument unit) of the Saturn V to obtain flight information under orbital conditions. The configuration of the Saturn IB was made to match the Saturn V as closely as possible. The two-stage launch vehicle boosted a payload consisting of the S-IVB, Iu, and a nose cone into a 188 km circular orbit with a period of 88.21 minutes and an inclination of 31.94 degrees. The S-IVB engine burned once in the Earth's atmosphere and then was shut down. The engine's capability to restart after coast was demonstrated. Flight information was obtained on venting and chill down systems, attitude and guidance control, thermal control, and performance of the propellant tanks. Two cameras were mounted to take photos to record the behavior of the liquid hydrogen fuel in the tanks. One of the cameras failed before launch, the other transmitted images to Earth. During the fourth orbit internal pressures built up in the S-IVB stage while a pressure differential test was being performed. The pressures built up well in excess of design values and the stage fragmented. However, all mission objectives were achieved.

Seagull 203 with 3.5/75 S-111-2 lens

If you get an old camera from the East, you immediately try to figure out, which origin was copied. A 6x6 folder with the front door hinged at the bottom? With coupled rangefinder and film advance lever? Usually copycats copy from the best. Agfa Super Isolette, Zeiss Ikon Super Ikonta? Most reviewers say, the Super Isolette was its roll model, but I have no final answer.

Nevertheless, the Seagull 203 is a well made camera. I wouldn't say, it reaches the level of an Isolette, but it is vastly superior compared to the Seagull 4B-1 I owned in the 1980ies. The 203 was made in Shanghai, China, and introduced in 1964. Its forerunner was the Shanghai 203 from 1963 and its follower the Seagull 203-I, which was produced until 1977.

Some notes:

* For rollfilm 120, can do 6x6 or 6x4.5 frames. The format can be reduced by slewing two hinged baffles in the film chamber.

* The film advance lever is just a ratchet. The film transport is not automatically stopped after advancing the film for one frame. The film advance is monitored in the classical way by two red windows on the back, one for 6x6, one for 6x4.5. Nevertheless, the winder is more convenient than a simple wheel.

* The film advance lever includes the double exposure prevention. It unlocks the shutter button when it is swung. A locked shutter button is indicated by a red dot next to it.

* The shutter reminds me of a Prontor shutter. Shutter speeds from 1 to 1/300 s and B. It features an exposure value device: shutter speeds and f-stops are coupled, if the shutter speed is changed the f-stop follows automatically, so that the exposure is kept. Unlike on Prontor shutters the cocking lever (with the green dot) instantly snaps back after cocking the shutter, so you can't see if the shutter is cocked or not.

* The Seagull 203 has a nice tool to determine the exposure: You can match symbols of the sun with different brightnesses to different scenes like "indoor" or "landscape", then you can read off an exposure value (a number from 4 to 17) and transfer it to the shutter. It doesn't provide more information than an exposure chart, but it is much more compact.

* The lens can be focused very conveniently with that knurled ring on the rear side of the shutter. That ring also actuates a lever for the rangefinder.

* The lens has front element focusing.

* The viewfinder is good, but not particular bright. There are two bright vertical lines to mark the 6x4.5 format, but no further lines for a frame or parallax marks, however. The patch with the superimposed image of the rangefinder is very clearly visible.

* Self-timer, DOF-scale, PC-socket, thread for remote cable, tripod bush.

* No accessory shoe

* The camera came with a very solid leather case.

The Seagull 203-I features a hot shoe, the advance lever is plastic made and the exposure value system was dropped. There exists also a 203-H, but I barely find information about it.
