Frangipani (Plumeria)

For my 100 Flowers Project - 2022

Until about 4 years ago there was a Frangipani tree in a garden along our street. It was taken out. Thankfully our friend Kath, across the street now has one. She came over to let me know it is flowering and would I like to get a photo.

Some of you will remember our 'Almost Rose' - so named as it was very poorly and I was ready to pull it out a few years back. However I gave it some love and it gives us at least three blooms each year

"Lilly pillies are native Australian trees and shrubs, with smooth glossy leaves and a dense, bushy growth habit. They are hardy and will grow happily in sun or shade and moist, well-drained soil. These features, along with the flushes of colour in new growth that most varieties display, make them a favourite for hedging and informal screening.

Lilly pillies are classed under a number of different genera. Formerly known as Eugenia, they are presently classed as Acmena, Syzygium or Waterhousea but the plethora of commercial marketing names can add to the confusion.

There is frequently a lot of confusion about the names of the various garden varieties but, as natives of the Australian rainforest, Lilly pillies generally do well in most settings and are pretty hardy.

Although Lilly pillies grow into large trees in their normal rainforest setting, they quite happily adapt to regular pruning for size and you can also obtain miniature varieties.

Lilly pilly hedges produce a marvellous display of highly fragrant white flowers in summer and the berries are perfect for preserves and jams."

Love these tiny fruits.

I spotted a small clump of these delightful pink Convolvulus growing wild at the side of Sneydes Rd. yesterday.

what is water, that pours silver, and can hold the sky?

20/100 pictures 2011 theme: water

Today's macro Mondays theme is cloth. I found it challenging to find an interesting composition so this was the best of the bunch. It feels like a nod to Beetlejuice which works since Halloween is right around the corner.

HMM!

The Needle's Eye at Tarlair, is an arch eroded in metamorphosed Dalradian sandstone, these rocks were originally sediments deposited in an ocean in the region of 600 million years ago.An intersting feature of them is that you can still see relicts of some of the original sedimentary structures in them. Found this doing my hobby geocaching - its great what you find 😁

Early in the morning it´s time for the cranes to leave the "harbor". They will fly to the nearby fields to have breakfirst, lunch and dinner there. By the way - many cranes have left for France, Spain or Northafrica already.

It's very unlikely this store still offers the drive up to buy liquor, those days are long gone. It's more likely you have to go inside and show your ID. I love this sign.

Colourful and fun, this original Retro sign still alerts passers-by they are open for business. Not sure if it's lit at night but I will revisit at night to find out.

This is a photograph of the many torii found at the Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine in Kyoto, Japan. I was amazed that I was able to photograph it without people in the frame as it was packed.

Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of Inari, located in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto, Japan. The shrine sits at the base of a mountain also named Inari which is 233 metres above sea level, and includes trails up the mountain to many smaller shrines which span 4 kilometers.

Since early Japan, Inari was seen as the patron of business, and merchants and manufacturers have traditionally worshipped Inari. Each of the torii at Fushimi Inari Taisha is donated by a Japanese business. First and foremost, though, Inari is the god of rice.

This popular shrine is said to have as many as 32,000 sub-shrines (bunsha) throughout Japan.

The yellow rose became a symbol of the Womens’ Suffrage Movement in America (especially after World War 1). Zonta had its beginnings in Buffalo New York in 1919, but as far as I know, it shouldn’t be confused with the Yellow Rose Of Texas. I believe that is a different flower, but if I’m mistaken please let me know as soon as possible!

In earlier times, especially during the Victorian era, a yellow rose symbolized jealousy, dying love and infidelity. But as times changed, so did the meaning of the yellow rose. In the modern era, it's been used to convey a number of sentiments, with friendship being the main one. However, there is another possible reason that Zonta founders chose a yellow rose as the symbol of Zonta International – it was the symbol of the suffragist movement in the USA.

Zonta Rose Day, which coincides with International Women’s Day on 8th March, is a day to reflect on the worldwide voluntary work done by Zonta members to improve the status of women;, and it's suggested that you might like to send a yellow rose to someone who has made an impact in your life...!

The latest version of the Zonta rose (above) was – it appears – developed in or around 2008, is a wonderful clear yellow, is of larger than average size, and it’s yellowness intensifies when the flower is kept in water (where it will last for a long time!).

The above has been taken from www.zonta.org/Images/docs/AboutUs/Zonta%20100%20Years/App... but the actual site has much more detail if you're interested…!

In closing, I have to admit that when I took the photo in the Wellington Rose Garden, I had no idea that the Zonta Rose had so much history around it...!

Thank you for your very kind and encouraging comments beneath my photos...! Your support is very greatly appreciated.

2012. The Fir Island Farms/Hayton Snow Goose Reserve - Snow Geese by the thousands start arriving from the Arctic in early October. Typically 70,000 to 90,000 winter in North Puget Sound until late March or April.

Fraser-Skagit Population Dynamic. "Snow geese that over-winter in northwest Washington comprise a unique population of intercontinental travelers shared by three countries: the United States, Canada and Russia. These snow geese make an arduous, annual flight to Russia’s Chuckchi Sea, to breed on Wrangel Island off the north coast of Siberia. They are called the Fraser-Skagit population, because the same identification collaring/banding studies that disclosed details of their migration timing and itinerary, found that snow geese of this group had a high fidelity to one nesting site on Wrangel Island and to one wintering area, here. They stay apart from the other snow geese aggregations that nest separately on Wrangel and winter in California." ~ wdfw.wa.gov

Probably dates back to the 50's. The motel is still open and scrapes in with a 1 star rating. The sign once said HBO Phones. Weekly Rates. I didn't go in to inquire.

I imagine back in the day this was a very popular and busy motel.

Not sure if the sign is still lit but I do like it.
