The first week of July 1991 was the last week of Speedlink operation, after which wagonload traffic in the UK was significantly reduced. Whitemoor Yard was a hub for Speedlink traffic in East Anglia so a long day trip from the south coast was called for. 4th July dawned misty but sunny and for the most part, we had a blue sky day.

We captured a good number of Speedlink trains, but this was was completely unexpected: it is an empty coal train at March running as 6H46, the 1519 Foxton Cement Works to Whitemoor Yard. Foxton was supplied from Kings Lynn Docks with imported coal to fire the cement kilns and these empties were returning to Whitemoor for stabling.

With a few exceptions (including flic.kr/p/246aLBb and perhaps more unusually flic.kr/p/QMa1eG), I captured very few class 20s on film so capturing 20187 and 20040 here on a typical working for them, albeit in a slightly unusual location, was very welcome.

Mural "Whale" by Swiss artists duo Nevercrew on the pavement of Rue à Degrée in Mons, Belgium.

Nevercrew is a duo of Swiss artists composed of Christian Rebecchi & Pablo Togni. They have worked together since 1996 and the subjects they deal with are the human condition, the relationship between man and nature (and vice versa) and the impact of economic or social systems on the environment. Most of Nevercrew's creations depict animals that are lost, in trouble, or imprisoned. Each painting denounces in its own way the misfortunes endured by nature because of human activity. (...)

Inspired by the name of the street, “Degree Street”, they used the reference to temperature, rise/increase and descent/fall/decrease.

For Freight Car Friday here is a simple portrait of an old friend from home that I found while poking around the industrial district of this great southern port city. After these guys cleared into the yard by the International Paper mill as seen here: flic.kr/p/2orwBib I couldn't help but notice this Guilford gray 50 ft boxcar, part of the massive fleet acquired in the final years of the independent Maine Central and delivered in harvest gold with pine tree route logos. MEC 20040 is from a 150 unit lot of 50 ft 100 ton cars built by FMC (originally Food Machinery and Chemical Corporation - at that time owner of Gunderson in Oregon) in Sep-Oct 1979.

It's still hard for me to wrap my head around that this car is, like the entirety of the old Pan Am / Guilford part of the giant CSXT system now...

Causing a stir at Cambridge is the arrival of 20078 & 20040 with the 1528 Kings Lynn - Cambridge after 47482 had failed. 15-5-89.

What made this an even more amazing sight was the fact that after travelling the length and breadth of the country for many years, I was reduced to just one Class 20 to clear the class. That 20 was 20040 so to then clear my 20's here at my home station was just unbelievable.

Parked in the station sidings at Blair Athol, readied for a PW weekend on the Highland Mainline.

In the intervening years, this bank of sidings has deteriorated into a fully overgrown, grass and shrub ridden mess. Good for rabbits but not for a railway.

The Wacky Racers part of the 2014 Weekend at the Asylum, organised by Victorian Steampunk Society is the biggest Steampunk Festival in Europe. It is held in the historic uphill district of Lincoln, Lincolnshire.
