Downtown Lille, France, in July 2003. I took my son and a friend and visited the Benelux states, living in my brother's Belgian home and making road trips in the area. We arrived to Lille in the evening, walking around in the city center before a 2 hour drive back.
Lilla belvárosa Franciaországban. 2003. júliusában barátommal és fiammal egy hetet a Benelux-államokban töltöttünk, kihasználva a céges autóm kilométereit és bátyámék átengedett lakását. Naponta tettünk csillagtúrákat a környéken, ezen a napon Franciaország közeli helyeit is meglátogatva. Lille-ből még két óra autózás volt a szállásig, és már eleve sötétedéskor érkeztünk.
À Lille, dans le Nord, le monument aux morts, inauguré devant le Palais Rihour le 22 mai 1927, consiste en un haut pan de mur portant trois tableaux : les Captifs, la Relève et la Paix. Il porte l'inscription suivante : « Aux lillois soldats et civils la cité a élevé ce monument afin de rappeler au cours des siècles l'héroïsme et les souffrances de ses enfants morts pour la paix ». L'architecte du projet est Jacques Alleman et le sculpteur Edgar Boutry

Le Havre, Normandy, France - pictures taken during a walking tour in the city in April 2003. As I often did, I added a day to my business trip so that air fare would be cheaper for the company (by adding a Saturday night to the trip), and I used it to take a train to visit two towns in Normandy.
Le Havre, kikötőváros a Szajna torkolatában Normandiában, Franciaországban. 2003. áprilisában jöttem ide vonattal Párizsból, közben megállva Rouenban. Üzleti utaimon akkoriban szokásos volt, hogy az olcsóbb repülőjegy érdekében a cég kifizette a szállást, ha egy szombat éjszaka is beleesett a kiküldetésbe, ilyenkor ezen a napon kirándultam vagy várost néztem, ezen a vasárnapon kivételesen Normandiában. A modern és jellegtelen Le Havre-ba az óceánpart és egy gyermekkori olvasmányom hozott, Michel Quoist Dani naplója ugyanis itt játszódott.
Le Havre is situated on the right bank of the estuary of the river Seine on the English Channel, remains deeply influenced by its employment and maritime traditions. Its port is the second largest in France, for total traffic, and the largest French container port. The name Le Havre means 'the harbour' or 'the port'. After the 1944 bombings the firm of Auguste Perret began to rebuild the city in concrete. The oil, chemical, and automotive industries were dynamic during the Trente Glorieuses (postwar boom) but the 1970s marked the end of the golden age of ocean liners and the beginning of the economic crisis: the population declined, unemployment increased and remains at a high level today. I personally felt inclined to visit the place for a Michel Quoist roman that takes place here and that I read as a teenager.
