Italien, In Malcesine(TN) am Gardasee - Auf dem Monte Baldo (1760m)
Die Luftseilbahn Funivia Malcesine-Monte Baldo führt von Malcesine in zwei Teilstücken zur Bergstation Tratto Spino auf 1760 m s.l.m.. Sie bedient im Winter das angeschlossene Skigebiet und wird im Sommer von Wanderern und Radfahrern genutzt, die hier verschiedene Schotterpisten als Downhillstrecken nutzen. Auch als Startplatz für Gleitschirmflieger ist der Monte Baldo auf Grund seiner leichten Erreichbarkeit über die Seilbahn und der enormen Höhendifferenz (1680 m) zum Landeplatz in Malcesine äußerst beliebt.

Heute war ein traumhafter Morgen bei den Birkhähnen. Der einzige Wermutstropfen war, dass unsere Körperwärme vom Aufstieg schnell vom kalten Wind beseitigt wurde und wir schlotterten, trotz guter Kleidung, nach zwei Stunden im Schnee liegen.
British veterans 2001 (20035), 2004 (20228), power through Arcy-sur-Cure with the 14:20 Saulieu to Cravant Bazarnes freight. on 21st March 2000. Lucy-sur-Cure is a commune in the Yonne department in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in central France, approximately 90 miles west of Dijon.
The train consists includes a test coach and vans from Avallon, along with stone and timber wagons collected en-route.
After returning to the UK in the early 2000's veteran 2001 was eventually broken up at EMR Kingsbury in July 2019 after being stripped for spares.
Classmate 2004 was built at the English Electric plant at Newton-le-Willows as D8128 in January 1966. After a fairly uneventful career it was withdrawn by British Rail in 1989. At some stage it was sold on to French independent operator CFD (Chemins de Fer Departementaux) who had the locomotive overhauled and modified at BREL Crewe works. After CFD dispensed with the 20's they were all returned to the UK with mixed fortunes. Luckily 2004 was saved and over the years overhauled and return to UK spec and can now be found on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire railway in superb BR blue with it headcode box restored with domino dots.

By 1990 the Dove Holes quarry was shunted by British Rail, using a dedicated loco which remains the practice today, in 2021, Victa Railfreight have the contract, hiring in DRS class 66s. On the right sits 37422 which is allocated the duty. It felt strange for me to see a former West Highland loco relegated to such duty after such a short time in its intended service. This loco will have spent three years up there on Passenger work before being declared redundant by the introduction of the class 156, another story. No doubt though that its mid live refurbishment and its conversion to AC current prolonged its life, and it is still in service with DRS. The class 20s, numbers 127 and 035 have just arrived on a ballast train. They will recess here before heading back towards Chinley after lunch. I have never heard such a noise as these made restarting this train twice on the 1 in 90, well, maybe the acceleration away from the dip beneath Warrington Bank Quay with a loaded coal train bound for Fiddlers Ferry power station..
This was the scene that greeted me after cycling down from Dove Holes, straight off a Buxton bound train on the higher passenger line above the tunnel, and this was the first picture I took. Certainly, it was going to be a good day!

2004 (20228) and 2001 (20035) thunder towards the N6 road crossing at Lucy-S-Cure near Auxerre with the 07:41 Cravent-Bazarnes to Saulieu trip freight. The four vans behind the engines contain mineral water for Avallon, and the timber empties were dropped off at Le Reche-en-Brenil. 08:05 20.03.00

Bangalore-Talguppa Express negotiates a massive S-curve with Hubli's 20035 in the lead. As of last week, this beautiful place is littered with pits for electrification. Happy that I found this place and got enough footage over the years.

A day spent on the Main between Gemünden and Karlstadt and this has to be the highlight, although I was walking back to the car at the time, so I was not in a great location, but I mustn't complain with Centralbahn Sonderzug 1142 704 and associated empty coaching stock (ECS) heading north through Gambach on the approaches to Gemünden from Innsbruck Hbf - Köln

Typical French scene but dominated by the sight of English Class 20's 20228 (2004) and 20035 (2001) stabled next to Caravelle unit 8691 at Avallon on a fine 20th March 2000

In 1992, Class 20s numbers 20035, 20063, 20139 and 20228 were overhauled at BREL Crewe Works and exported to France, via Poole and the French port of Cherbourg, to operate for Compagnie de Chemin de Fer Départementaux (CFD). Based at the small semi-roundhouse at Autun, not far from Dijon, they powered a handful of freights over the 106-mile Cravant Bazarnes to Montchannin via Etang line. The four locos returned to the UK in 2005 after the freight operation was taken over by French rail subsidiary VFLL Three survive in preservation.
