On the edge of the abyss
For years, perhaps centuries, the cliff at the Pointe du Van (29), which bears the chapel of Saint-They, has given rise to concerns about its stability. A study has just confirmed that the risks are very real and that, for 40 years, the cliff has receded from one to four meters.
At the start of the 20th century, Anatole Le Braz predicted that the Saint-They chapel, built in the 16th century on a 70m cliff overlooking the sea, “didn't have long to live”. Almost a hundred years later, it is still there, but constant rockslides decrease the distance which separates it from the edge of the cliff from year to year.

20031 heads north through York. It had worked south earlier with a different formation of vans, so presume this was from Dringhouses Yard.
20031 rests at Oxenhope having arrived with the 20:00 departure from Keighley on the evening of 11th September 2021. The climb up the valley was entertaining with a damp rail providing numerous slips as the loco navigated its way up the Worth Valley.

Class 20, 20031, approaches Damems Station on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. The 20 was working the 16.55 Oxenhope to Keighley service at the KWVR Diesel Gala.
In place of steam due tot the warm weather, Class 20 No. 20031 rolls out of Mytholmes tunnel with the 15:55 to Keighley on Sunday 14th August 2022.
Seen near Oakworth on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway .. 20031 was deputising for failed 27001.. This was another one of those grab shots we often stumble upon with no time to compose or change the settings, but after pressing the shutter and viewing the end result I was very pleased with the shot.
In what could be a mainline scene from around thirty years ago, Trainload Coal liveried Class 20, no.20031, takes a breather between duties during the first day of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway gala on Friday 10th September 2021.
2021 is also a significant milestone in the history of the Phoenix Railway-Photographic Circle, with the celebration of their 50th anniversary. An excellent book, called '50 Years of Phoenix' has been published to mark the occasion. Click on the link below to see a few sample pages, and perhaps even order a copy.

The tanks on the right had been collected earlier from the nearby Oakengates terminal by the Bescot Trip locomotive and would be added to the rear of Penyffordd bound service.

The destination of "Jarvis Brook Stn" is somewhat misleading as the railway station although in the locality of Jarvis Brook is named Crowborough. However the station itself has been renamed several times in the past, from its opening in 1868 it was called Rotherfield it was then changed to Crowborough in 1880, Crowborough and Jarvis Brook in 1897 before resuming the name Crowborough in 1980!

People pretend not to like grapes when the vines are too high for them to reach, or pretend not to like chicken when they can't run after them and catch.
This one is for my son.

A look back at the tail end of last year and a visit to the KWVR. It was something of a quiet time so there was plenty of unobstructed views to be had of the locos!
In this view the points man is making his way back to the loco so that he can do the same duty at the other end of the coaches that he has done at this end of the stock. The general purpose crewman.
Since this occasion, the new film to follow on from the original "The Railway Children" has been released, both filmed in the area and using the KWVR. All good revenue at a time when possibly a little extra revenue is vital.
The recent heatwave has caused even more concern for Heritage Lines. Lineside fires are a concern and I well recall when on a certain railway the train stopped and volunteers were asked for to fight a lineside fire using equipment from the train. Another item to add to my CV! - when the local fire brigade turned up to complete the job we all got back on the train. It was ages ago so the problem is nothing new and various approaches have taken place. The most obvious is diesel replacement for a while.
It is hard to plan for this because the reliance is on an accurate weather forecast.
While this may be the subject of much debate, and there have been some classic bloopers, as I am typing this the bottom of my computer screen is showing sunny and 20C. It is actually raining hard and has been doing so for over an hour.
So, best of luck with the railway planning!
