These were shot with Nikon's best D3X with the 14-24mm wide-angle Nikkor lens. 7 exposures were taken at 1 EV intervals, and combined in photomatix to bring out the shadows and highlights.

Ralph Waldo Emerson. The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship.
Lucius Annaeus Seneca: On entering a temple we assume all signs of reverence. How much more reverent then should we be before the heavenly bodies, the stars, the very nature of God!
John Muir: All the wild world is beautiful, and it matters but little where we go, to highlands or lowlands, woods or plains, on the sea or land or down among the crystals of waves or high in a balloon in the sky; through all the climates, hot or cold, storms and calms, everywhere and always we are in God's eternal beauty and love. So universally true is this, the spot where we chance to be always seems the best.
When it's gone, it becomes history.

I think f/2.8 is my favorite f-stop on the 85mm f/1.4D. I've been playing around mostly in aperture-priority mode and find myself frequently going with f/2.8.

I used a Schneider Kreuznach Xenar 1:2.8/50 lens with a 39mm thread for the Braun Paxette rangefinder on a KMZ Zenit 3M SLR, which also has a M39 mount. As the Zenit has a larger flange distance than the Paxette, the lens automatically becomes a macro lens, but it cannot be focused to infinity.
The Xenar is Schneider's variant of the classic Tessar design - in my opinion one of the best ever.

After 2.5 hours of coasting at high speed on the "Coast Guard" boat on the right, we arrive deep inside the Knight inlet in a place called Glendale Cove. This is a wonder of nature and paradise for bears and wildlife in general: high mountains with snow, dense rainforest, tall grass in the plains and rivers where tens of thousands of salmons run every August-September.
Bears make a feast at that time of the year accumulating the calories for the upcoming winter... Unfortunately for me it is not the season to see the bears eating salmons...
Because we need to approach the bears near the banks and in the tall grass, we need to change boat to take a tiny shallow flat boat housing the 12 of us. This is the boat you see on the left with an elevated observation deck with green metal tubes.
We docked on this platform in the middle of nowhere to switch boats: last chance for "washroom" in the larger boat as we need to hold it for 2-3 hours for bear viewing and there is no possibility (no desire) to go on firm ground for that....
Excitement is building... cameras with long lenses are mounted on Tripod (not easy on this tiny boat). I am glad that I chose the monopod. A Female photographer has the monster Nikon AF-S 800mm f/5.6G VR.. Another photographer has both the latest D5 and D500. I stick with what I own and have field tested (I cannot afford the $10,000 lens anyway:). So I rely on my trusted Nikon D810 with good and affordable Nikon 200-500mm with TC-14EIII on Monopod..
Wait a minute: I cannot find my Teleconverter! I left it in the other camera bag in the car: Aggghh!... All this planning for this stupid mistake...
Let's hope that 500mm FL will do it... I do not know what to expect. But these other guys have 600mm, 800mm lenses...so they must know something...

This crop is about 30% the size of the original picture so the resolution of this 42Mega Pixel sensor camera is still there and stunning. I did not see the mosquito on it when I took the photo. When you zoom on it, it is possible to see the details on the wings of the mosquito: quite scary to realize that we are getting close to hand held microscopic photography!

In honor of the new Beauty and the Beast movie trailer (which looks awesome by the way) I figured I'd post up one of my Beauty and the Beast related shots from the Flower & Garden Festival. For this particular shot I actually had the tripod fully extended on the edge of the fountain. I shot with the Nikon 70-200 2.8. I wanted to get a straight on shot like this but I didn't really want the fountain in it but I did want all of the great background buildings and Eiffel tower. Even with the tripod on the ledge and fully extended I did get just a bit of the fountain water spraying into the frame. I also had to make a compromise and really push Belle and the Beast to the bottom edge of the frame but I think it ultimately works for this shot because of how the background fills the frame vertically.

The local says this is a very old forest, few thousand years old... but I did felt the spookiness whilst wandering alone in this ancient forest.
There is this local folklore saying if a bird following your movement means something bad might happen, and it happens to be a Siberian Jay and oh what a lovely bird :)
